Configuration :: Exclude A Folder When Build The Website?
Aug 5, 2010
VWD 2008 Express.
I have a folder in my project that contains files I do not want to process (they are only for reference) when I build the web site. These files produce errors because they reference things I do not have in my site. How can I exclude a folder so that it is not processed during a build?

The several different environments (e.g. live, demo etc) of my web app are differentiated by config settings in a folder called EnvironmentConfiguration. Whenever I update one of the sites, I delete the EnvironmentConfiguration folder from the precompiled site before copying the website files over (i.e. in order that the EnvironmentConfiguration folder in the deployment location is not replaced). Just to save mistakes, is there a way I can get Visual Studio not to produce the EnvironmentConfiguration folder when it precompiles the site for me?

I have a large folder (1.5 GB) in my ASP.NET Web Site, called Downloads, which contains media files, graphics, etc. No code that needs to be compiled or even deployed on every build.
I use Web Deployment Projects to compile and deploy. Every time I build the deployment project, the Downloads folder gets included and copied to the output location. This is taking a significant amount of time, because the folder is copied twice.
I've tried modifying the wdproj file like this:
<ItemGroup><ExcludeFromBuild
Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)Download*"
/>
I've also tried not adding the * after the folder, but then I get a message that says the directory is not empty during the build process.
I've also tried this approach:
<ItemGroup>
<RemoveBeforeMerge Include="$(OutputPath)Downloads*" />
</ItemGroup>
And that still did not help. (also says: The directory is not empty.)What is the proper way to tell WDP not to consider a folder at all?

i was hoping to build the user/role configuration utility into my website. I have posted before, and from what i have read, you need to create your own user/role membership utility in your website.but, i noticed in the
Microsoft.net directory C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727ASP.NETWebAdminFiles, that this is the entire interface for managing roles and users for a web site as long as you use standard asp.net security.is it possible to copy this site into my site to have a ready-to-go interface for user management without a user needing to have visual studio? It seems like it should be possible with minimal code changes, but I might be wrong. Im just looking for a shortcut.

On our website, we have an application within our website. The following is the folder structure:
website1 (main website)
bin directory1
website2(an application)
bin directory2
webconfig2
webconfig1
There are other folders under each of the main folders which contain other pages, images, etc.
We're trying to upgrade the website and are encountering some difficulties. We want to remove the website2 from the main website to see it it's causing the problem.
However, we cannot remove the bin folder and so we can't remove the website2 folder. We've been able to delete everything but the bin folder itself. We've tried downing the website and the application pool but we still get the 'access denied' error message.

I currently have a dedicated server running a number of sites, one of these sites I would like to add a subfolder to which runs a seperate index.html file, so effectively it looks like a different site.
I am struggling to acheive this, can anybody give me the steps involved to make this happen?
To clarify, i have a web address for example www.mydomain.com and would like users to browse to www.mydomain.com/subfolder and open up a sub folder.

I have a .net website that I've built but here's the catch - when it's deployed I don't know whether it will be deployed to the root of the site or to a sub folder of a larger site (and it needs to be able to move around between places)
And - here's the important bit - we will have zero access to IIS on the live server so this just has to run straight away.
So far I've managed to find work arounds for things like paths to resources but I now need to use a 3rd party component (.dll).
Normally this would go in the bin folder and, if I run my site in the root of the website it works fine but, as soon as we move the site to a sub folder, the reference to the 3rd party component wont work.
Now - I know normally you'd suggest creating a virtual directory under IIS but remember - I HAVE NO ACCESS TO IIS.
So - is there a way to still use 3rd party components in my project and have my project all run in a sub folder of a website?
And no - I can't move just the bin folder to the root of the site - it all has to sit within its own folder.

How can I give my ASP.net website permission to see this folder on the server? C:PVSWin. The website is actually running on a virtual path D:WebSitesAdco.We are running IIS ver 6.The website uses a table from Pervasive to locate Vendors. The SqlDataSource works from the VS2008 IDE which is running on the server, but if a user logs into the website remotely they get this error:ERROR [IM003] Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 1114 (Pervasive ODBC Client Interface). This error generally indicates that the path to the DB components is not found, or is not available to the calling program, so I guess that the website does not have permissions.

How do I exclude Web.config from server when publishing website (not web application project) in Visual Studio 2005 I can see information how to add setting to the Web.Config but in this instance the Web.config is fine on the servers; so I do not want the problem of introducing possible faulty Web.config to a live environment.

Is there any way that I can make it so that to use a "Production" publish profile, it would require that the build configuration was set to Release?
I believe you're supposed to be able to customize the profiles with add-ons or something...?

I want to create a folder to store some web controls, so the site structure doesn't have a zillion files in the root.
Except that if I create an ordinary folder, that folder is also visible on the web site. MSDN said you cannot put it in App_Code, and it doesn't really make sense to put it in other special folder like App_Data or App_Theme.

We store backup archives in subfolders of a folder on one of the server's external USB drive. I would like to have an ASP.NET app read the contents of this folder so the manager can view the backup files to confirm backups are working and optionally delete these backup files when an old drive is reconnected so it can be used for the next weeks backups.
This backup folder is oubviously outside the server's webroot. Is there some way I can grant authority so the ASP.Net app can access this folder for this purpose? I would be using VS Web Express, so can't create any signed packages and such.

I have an ASP.NET website and I want to find the /bin/[Configuration] folder to use an external tool (an exe file). When I use reflection to get calling assemblies location it returns something similar to:
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework\...Temporary ASP.NET Filesa1388a5e\...my.dll
Since each dll has its own directory under the temp ASP.NET Files this fails for me. How can I get the location of the compiled binary folder where the dll's and the .exe is (i.e. bin/) instead of asp.net's temporary cache?

comment: if u answer , please split your answer into numbers (like the questions) in order to avoid misunderstanding, thx :)
Hey. I'm going to finish read the book "Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# 2008".
And I'm going rebuild my html gaming website (flash games website)
www.gamesff.com
In the future site, There are 3 main pages:
Homepage (Present all the New games etc...) Category Page (There are 9 games categories , it's present the games of each category)Game Page - in this page people can play the game, and see description of the game like description, date added, rating, etc... They can vote for this game too
Before I'm starting build it I have some questions.
1. I want the same Header, Footer and Menu in all the pages of my website.
How to do it: With Master Page?
2. In the Homepage I have:
Links + Pictures + Description of The 12 newest games of all the categories.
Links + Pictures + Description or of The Most Popular games of the Last week.
Links + Pictures + Description of the Last (newest) 6 Games of each category (there are 9 categories: action, shooting, sports etc...). But not games that existing in the (Newest Games section (the first section in this list).
How to do it? : With DataSet using TOP sql property???
What is the best way (for Optimum Performance)
And how to do the third section in the list, how can I insert the top games of all the categories, but not Games that presented in the first section? (I can't use normal sql SELECT because it will present the games that in the first section.
3. In the Category Page people can see the games of each category (there are 9 categories pages - for each category)... and people can order the games (date added, ratings, and popular games) by using "DropDownList".
And people can see only 30 games per page. So there are buttons of: next, 1, 2, 3 etc... (Of each order)
How to do it?? For example if I want the Action Category page order by poplar: using sql: SELECT top (30) ..... where Category='Actoin' ORDERBY Visitor_Count ??
How to do the paging?
What to use DataSet? DataReader? DataBinding?
4. And how to make the game page?
Using Query String? And select details from the database By the Game_ID of the Query String??
What to do if I want nice game's Url address? (from example the game Batman)
Address Like this http://www.gamesff.com/action/Batman
5. in the game page, the code of the flash is like this:
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,29,0" width="525" height="400">
<param value="uploads/video-poker_0100.swf" />
<param value="high" />
<embed src="uploads/video-poker_0100.swf" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" width="525" height="400"></embed>
</object>
How can I embed the address of the game from the database to this code?
Using Data binding of <%# GameAddress %> for example.. ?
6. I want count the number of the visitor per page. I know How to do it. But how Can I avoid from double counting of each user per day?
What to do? use database table for list of ip address and this list will clear once a day ? (But if I have thousand of visitor per day can it reduce the performance of the server if the server connect to the database for using ip address for each time that someone visits any game?
Or using cookies? Or something else?
