Security :: Joining .net And Ruby Project Via Common Membership Provider?
Nov 8, 2010We have a very large .net site using the sql membershipprovider offered by .net. We need to join this to a ruby on rails project - allowing login to both platforms. The ruby project shoudl be able to read and write to the .net's profile information - but additionally may store extra records against the user. The .net user record should always be the master, with logins anthenticated against this. What is the best way to open up this membership provider - via api or similar. We need something that is easy to snap into the RoR solution but secure enough and extenable enough to meet our needs. Is there some way to add on openID or similar to the .net project - and would this be what is recommended or is there a better standard to allow us to link our users.
Other features we would need to have shared are: shared email address, email verification email for both platforms. Both systems have independent CRMs and email systems so unsubscribing from these would also need to be linked preferably with an independent unsubscribe system.
Share App_LocalResources Between A Few Pages?
Mar 2, 2010Is there any way to use a common RESX file for a few of my ASPX pages?The default naming convention seems to be NameOfWebPage.aspx.resx so it seems like there is a 1 to 1 mapping...
However it would be REALLY convienient if i could make a few of my ASPX pages all use the same RESX page, because they are mostly using the same strings and its stupid to have a separate RESX for each page.
I know about GetGlobalResourceObject() but my application is very big and it doesnt make sense to make the strings global when they are really only needed for these few pages.
C# - How To Share Code Between Pages And Masterpages
Sep 13, 2010Now, I'm working on a project where I don't really understand how can I do things without multiple inheritance, without duplicating code.
Here's the situation. There is a website with a home page and other pages inheriting from a masterpage (the home page does not inherit from). Both the page and the masterpage are performing some stuff: custom login, statistics, loading of users settings for customization, etc. For the moment, the solution is crappy, since the source code for those tasks is just copied twice.
The home page class inherits from Page. The masterpage, on the other hand, inherits from Masterpage. Logically, it would be great to inherit from a common class too, but it's multiple inheritance, so it's impossible.
So what to do instead?
I thought about several ways, but dislike them:
Create a standalone class which will be called from the page/masterpage class. So for example instead of writing bool isDisplayingTips = this.CurrentUser.IsDisplayingTips, I would write bool isDisplayingTips = this.SharedObjects.CurrentUser.IsDisplayingTips. I don't like it, since it's longer to write. Create a "real", empty, common masterpage, and inherit both the home page and the masterpage from it. Not only it will require to write more code to access masterpage parameters, but it will also slow the things down, requiring an additional masterpage on each request.

Is the following way suitable one ? Embedding masterpages and the user controls in a dll and using VirtualPathProvider to load the master pages and user controls dynamically.
But in this approach developers can not view the design. Is there any other way to convert master pages and user controls to a different format as developers can able to view design?

Oct 13, 2010I have modified a part of code of an existing web application. Once it worked fine on my local machine, I moved it to the common server. But, when different users hit the common server, the web application is behaving differently. I tried stopping and starting the website on the common server and it worked fine for sometime around a day and again it started working differently for different users. Then I tried to restart the IIS on the common server and it worked fine for once and again bounced back.Can anyone please suggest the areas where I can check to resolve the issue.

Mar 21, 2010I have created 2 projects in a solution. One project contains Asp.net classes with login page and different other pages.
Another project contains a web service.
When I launch the solution(click F6 in visual studio 2008) the login page can access to the method of the webservice. Both projects are launched.
However when i added this 2 projects into IIS and deploy them (with create command) the login page cannot contact the method of the web service. Even though the web service is running because i can acces it manually. But they cannot communicate each other.

Aug 31, 2010Page B - loads slowly and needs to do some CPU-intensive operations on the web server.
I noticed that when someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly. This is even worse if multiple users are loading Page B at the same time. Page A won't finish loading until Page B is done.
Is there a best practice for making sure that Page A can still load quickly? Maybe a config setting or IIS setting that I need to change from its default? With 2 users loading Page B at the same time, the web server CPU usage only gets to 30% so I suspect it might be something I can tweak with the settings.

Aug 11, 2010I have a solution I'm working on in VS2010 Professional, using ASP.NET 4.0 with the AJAX Toolkit.This has been working fine, but when I started it up today, I got the runtime exception shown above. This exception occurs on any page with a control from the toolkit.Sometimes when I load a page, I get an exception "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Windows, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, ublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." If I then reload the page (without making any changes), I then get the exception shown in the subject line.I tried dragging an AJAX Toolkit control from the toolbox onto a page, and then deleting it, and that worked - once. The next time I tried the page (or any other), I got the exception again. Dragging a control out didn't help this time.

Missing Master Pages When Using Web Deployment Project?
May 16, 2010I am trying to deploy an ASP.NET 3.5 Web Application to my production server and I am using the Web Deployment Project for this purpose. I have a folder named MasterPages in the root of the application which contains all the master page files. When I build this project in the release mode and deploy it on to the server I am getting the below error message:
Directory 'C:inetpubwwwrootMasterPages' does not exist. Failed to start monitoring file changes.
I am using ASP.NET AJAX and the ToolkitScriptManager is on the master pages. I have noticed that the MasterPages folder is missing from the release build.

For a few days now when I first go to the page it askes me to login like it should then when I navigate to other pages it asks for login again once logged in that page then works well if I navigate to a new page for the session it asks again to login. I am using forms authentication.

Mar 4, 2011I have an ASP.NET MVC application that attempts to read a file in using a filestream and File.OpenRead().
When the path to the file is a share on the same workgroup, and I give access to NETWORK SERVICE for the share, this works perfectly as desired.
However, when the path to the share is a UNC path to a remote share within the LAN, with read permissions open for "Everyone", the "File.OpenRead()" method throws an exception saying "Could not find a part of the path".
In my test cases I'm debugging locally with the ASP.NET MVC app being given a UNC path to the computer that it's actually running on. It's a share on my C drive, being "Shared" with permissions to "Everyone" for read access.
Is there something in IIS that needs to be configured? If I try to impersonate, in this context, the impersonation doesn't matter because NETWORK SERVICE was the user trying to access the files when it worked for a share in the same workgroup.
