I'm creating a website and I'm testing resgistering and Log-in.
I followed a simple tutorial to create a Log-in in Visual Studio C# template which generated a SQL Server database.Locally the Log-in and registration page works perfectly. The problem is that when I upload my site to the hosting site the navigation works but the Log-in and Registration forms send an error when clicked "Register" or "Log-in". I contacted the site and they upload my database the way it should be because I was doing it wrong. I can see all my files including the data base.
They commented me that I had to do a connection string to the data base so the login and registration forms can work. I don't understand how to do that, I know the connection string has to be declared in the Web Config File, the thing is that I don't know how to write that code and link it to my data base in the hosting site, in fact I have sample code but I don't know just what do I need to put in it.

When I use VS2008 to create a new form application, I am able to go to the Data menu select "Show Data Sources" then the "Data Sources" window appears. Then I am able to "Add New Data Source" and so on. But when I create a new Web Application. I can not do that. Am I not able to create a Data Source on web applications?

I have an ASP.NET 1.1 app running fine on my local system and Win 2003 server. I transferred this site to a Win 2008 R2 server. The site is running under an app pool configured to run under ASP.NET v2.0. Some of the pages of the site throw exceptions and there are other problems in running the site as well however the same works good on Win 2003 Server. When I try to run the site under app pool for ASP.NET 1.1, it says "500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."

My servers currently use the 6.0 SDK to compile VS 2008 projects. I am thinking about upgrading them to use the 7.0 SDK to compile VS 2010 projects. However, I'm worried that VS 2008 projects re-compiled using the 7.0 SDK will introduce risk and have to be QA'd again. This will be a costly process for me.
How can I ensure that VS 2008 projects compiled with the 7.0 SDK will work exactly the same as compiled with the 6.0 SDK?

We need to get MVC 2.0 installed on multiple servers. When we use the exe file AspNetMVC2_VS2008.exe to install MVC 2.0 it checks for prereqs. One of the prereqs ins VS 2008 SP1.
Now when we use the MSI file AspNetMVC2.msi to do the installation, MVC 2.0 is installed without complaining about VS 2008 SP1.
The exe file checks for prereqs, while the msi doesn't.
My questions is, do we really need VS 2008 SP1 installed along side MVC 2.0? If so why?

I wrote my first app in VB 2010 ASP/SQL. Runs perfectly in VS environment.
I then publish it to 2008 Server using Windows Authentication. The only App Pool it will start in is ASP.NET 4.0 Integrated....Classic will not work.
Starts out OK and then when the program tries to access SQL I get the following:
[Code]....
HTTP Error 500.24 - Internal Server Error An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode.

I dont' know if its IT that is having the issue, but we have both SQL2005 and SQL2008 on the machine, because we have data being pulled from both. Eventually 2005 is going away, but ATM it needs to stay until the conversion. But for some reason it won't connect to the 2008 instance. We are using DNS entry for security and easy use on connecting to the site from the external test web box.
<connectionStrings>
<add name="EntryConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=WEBTestSQL01.xxxxx.comSQL2008;Initial Catalog=EntryDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

give me an example of the proper connection string for getting VS 2010 to use the aspnet database on my SQL 2008 server? The db is there, I just can't seem to get connected. Server name GUNSITESQL, mixed security. I want to logon with a SQL user logon id, the db name is the default aspnet.
Currently, the web.config file is the default.

experienced pros on the best way of doing something.First let me give you the broad view of everything.I have a main site (http://www.ffinfo.com/) which is built completely in ASP.Net using C# 4 and has a SQL 2008 backend and then I have an CMS I am custom building to administer the site.At some point I hope to have more people playing the Final Fantasy games and helping me collect data to add to the site so I am using the CMS to both add/modify data in the SQL DB and genereate new pages on the main site as needed.I want to compile the main site so it runs faster as my server has limited resorces and after a reboot or upload of new pages it takes a little bit for the first visit to run.Now here is the problem.
When I use the CMS to make a new page I currently copy over a .asp and .aspx file from a template into the appropreate folder and am good but if I want to compile that page along with any other new pages made I have to scower my FTP for them, download to the local machine,build and publish.This will very quickly become a lot of work,not to mention I can not really take advantage of OOP.
So my question is this, how do I go about doing this better? Have I taken the wrong approce from the start and need to find another road or is the road I am ok I just need to improve my transportation?

I am using Integrated Windows authentication and Role based authorization.The web.config file has two Active Directory groups.Sample code of web.config file for Role based authorization (Actually I got this sample code from a moderator of this site Gary works well).
Code:
<location path="Bloodgroup.aspx">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<allow roles="MedcenterGroup1"/>
<deny users="*"/>
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
So user's who doesn't belog to "Group1" AD group, should get Unauthorized error. It works exactly like that. But, before getting unauthorized error, it shows a pop up screen (as shown in the attached picture) prompting to put userid and password. If a user in AD group "Group1" accesses "Blood group. aspx" page, popup message doesn't come which is correct. Following is the code in web.config file to handle errors:
Code:
The <customErrors> section enables configuration of what to do if/when an unhandled error occurs during the execution of a request. Specifically, it enables developers to configure html error pages to be displayed in place of a error stack trace. -->
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="GenericErrorPage.htm">
<error statusCode="401" redirect="Errors.aspx" />
<error statusCode="403" redirect="NoAccess.htm" />
<error statusCode="404" redirect="FileNotFound.htm" />
</customErrors>
Question 1: why does the popup box prompting user id and password comes up?
Question 2: I have put in web.config file in customErrors tag to direct to Errors.apsx page when I get 401.2, it should be redirected to Errors.aspx page. But it is not getting re-directed.

I'm deploying a web site to a server I've set up for testing. The website works great in development (Running in VS 2010) as well as in production on multiple client sites. I'm simply trying to test the site in a new environment. I simply copied the complete site (pages, code, directories, everything...) to my server. In IIS7 I created a new web site pointing to the directory containing my site's files and directories. I can open my site and my initial login page loads.
Database connections are made, page and buttons all seem great. Then, I log in. In the first line of code that attempts to instantiate an instance of a class contained in my App_Code folder, an exception is thrown, 'Invalid object name'. I've messed with as many settings as I could in IIS7 but to no avail. I've searched the internet on something regarding this, but nothing seemed to apply. At this point I'm about ready to install Visual Studio on my server to get it to run (this was the route one of the other developers took).

I have a new server that I am attempting to deply my very first asp.net website on. I have installed SQL 2008 r2 and loaded my DB on it. I am able to access the server/DB through Visual Stuidio. At least I know i can call it from the webserver to my local PC.
For some reason I just cant get my we.config's connection strong right. It might even be the <provider> info that I have wrong. I am just too inexperienced to know for sure. My Web.Config is very short so I will post all of it here.
-- Code is posted at the end --
How do I modify my local project to use my webservers DB instead of the standard SQL Express DB? The only connection string
Machine.Config that points to the sqlexpress database. Again I lack the experience to know how to do this. I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 r2 on my local pc.
[Code]....
