Configuration :: Using VS2008 To build / Compile Web Application And Then Publish It To The Server?
Jul 27, 2010
I'm relatively new to actually publishing sites on my own..Anyway, right now I am using VS2008 to build / compile my web application and then publish it to the server. Simple enough, until I want to change several of the code behinds, and don't want to spend 30 minutes re-publishing several thousand documents.
I have been reading that publishing via VS is not the best approach, so I guess I have two questions:
1. Using VS2008, is there a way to build the project and publish only certain parts of the project such as the pre-compiled code or better yet have VS only update the code that has been changed on the server? I suppose I could simply publish it to my local drive and pick apart the files from there / is there a better way?
2. In your opinion what is the best deployment strategy?

Using VS 2008 on Windows 7 trying to publish to Windows 2003 Server.
Receive the following error:
Unable to add '_MainFoot.ascx' to the Web site. Server error: A page with the name _MainFoot.ascx already exists. It was last modified by SERVERuser on 22 Apr 2010 11:20:29 -0700.
========== Publish: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 skipped ==========
The user control in the error is not a new control and has been previously published. It has been edited and I am trying to publish again with the update.
Options for Publish to IIS are:
1. Replace matching files with local copies
2. Only files needed to run this application
3. Include files from the App_Data folder
This problem occurs only with user controls, changes to webforms publish correctly.

How can I test an application that I am publishing to a remote provider's IIS7 hosted site, with the VS2008 development server that is built in with VS2008 on an XP Machine?
My membership/roles work perfectly up on the remote host. On ths hosted IIS7 site when I try to access a secure directory it redirects to login, and I am able to login, however when I launch (debug - F5) from VS2008, it will provide that folder/resource, no questions asked. Same build, config, etc... nothing has changed.
I am running XP, and local IIS version installed is 5.1.
My guess is what is happening is that the new format required in the web.config is configured properly for IIS7 deployment, which is why it works remotely, but when running locally through VS2008/XP it is running with an older version on IIS and does not recoginize the new tags.

I am using TFS to build my MVC app. I cannot do it because I get lots of compile errors. I am using version 4 of .Net and MVC 2. On the build server I have the .Net framework 4.0 installed. It has been suggested that I should also download the MVC framework as well, but when I look on the net all I can find is this MVC framework; http://mvcframework.codeplex.com/ which does not seem to be relevant and does not work anyway.
One of the assemblies I am missing on the build server is System.Web.Mvc dll.Typical error messages include; "The type or namespace name 'Mvc' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Web' (are you missing an assembly reference?)"What do I need to do to fix this?

I had first build an database and populated it with various information, set some properties related to FTS and other things.
Now, in the asp.net MVC application, I am able to add the database ServerExplorer->Connect To Database-> Data Source= MS SQL SERVER->Server name->OpAmp-pc. Now, I was unable to add the database by copying the file in app data folder.
My doubt it how can I share the website+ database with my fellow batchmate or put the whole website online.
Build->Publish Sirte, didn't solved the pupose.

I'm working in Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I have a web application based upon the standard ASP.NET Web Application, which contains the aspnetdb.mdf SQL Express database for forms based security. For testing deployment, I'm trying to use the Publish option to publish the web app to IIS 7, which exists on the same machine that I'm building the web app on. The machine is running Windows 2008 R2.
I went through the Help file to set up the deployment of the database, using the Package/Publish SQL tab in the site properties. I followed the help file to the letter, or so I thought. I go to publish to the virtual directory I set up on IIS and it gives me errors, specifically saying the following:
Web deployment task failed.(The database'|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf' could not be created.)
I took this to mean the the path isn't valid for publishing to, which makes sense. So I changed the destination path to the fully qualified path (C:WebAppsApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf) and ran it again. This time I got the following error:
Web deployment task failed.(Cannot connect to the database 'C:WebAppsAppDataaspnetdb.mdr'.)
I looked at the security for the folder and everything seems fine. Now I'm stuck.
My question is - can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or supply a list of steps to follow, or give me a link to a site that has clear steps as to how this is done?

I have installed the sql reporting server in my system. Issue 1:I am not able to publish the reports from visual studio. When I publish a login box is displayed, and when given admin credentials, it does not accept and shows the box again. The users I tried to login with are members of Administrator groupIssue 2:Report manager URL is given as localhost/Reports_SQLEXPRESS in reporting service configuration manager. But when I use that in the browser, it asks for login, and when provided admin credentials, it gets redirected to localhost/Reports_SQLEXPRESS/Pages/Folder.aspx. There are no property tabs, just the report server page header. The only links are "home" and "help".

Tools: MS Visual Studio 2008
Language: ASP.NET VB (Visual Basic)
.NET Framework: 3.5
Host: Winhost.com basic hosting
I have a class that is normally compiled into a .dll prior to distribution and used as a component library.
IE: vbc /t:library /out:xyz.dll xyz.vb
(User would download then put the .dll in the bin directory and use
Imports xyz
Dim obj As New xyz
ojb.Foo)
There is a need to write a line of content to the class file specific to the user prior to compile.
Is this possible via server side?
I believe my short question would be, can I call vbc.exe from a site hosted with winhost.com and compile a class.vb file through vbc.exe on the server? And how?
I have been able to reach IE via ASP.NET from my account there so I think it may be possible.

I have a program which I would like to publish to my company's intranet server so that employees are able to implement updates. I am not sure how to go about this but I have done some research on IIS and I was wondering if anyone could clue me in a little more with what I need to do. I have not yet downloaded IIS to give it a try as I'm not sure where I would go from there.
