I have an editable grid where user can add/edit data. They also have the option to load previously entered data from last month. When the user then clicks save, i want to readd this newly modified data as a new record for this month. So basically I want to call the insertcommand, but it does not work. My 'save' method just 'updates' the records.
Providing sqldatasource, grid and save method

I have an user control placed on a content page. The content correctly receives the session variables. In the user control I have the following
1. The pageload fires and the text box is correctly set.
<script runat="server">
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (Session["app_id"] != null)
{
txtAppId.Text = Session["app_id"].ToString();
}
</script>
2. I have datagrid in the usercontrol which has a binding variable tied to a control parameters as follows
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceMain" runat="server"
ConnectionString="Myconnectionstring"
ProviderName="MyProvider" SelectCommand="select
last_name,first_name
from applications
where (id = to_number(:pAppId))">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:controlparameter name="pAppId" controlid="txtAppId" propertyname="Text" />
</SelectParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:controlparameter name="pAppId" controlID="txtAppId" propertyname="Text"
Direction="InputOutput" Type="Int32" ConvertEmptyStringToNull="True" />
I tried the following, same error
</SelectParameters>
<asp:SessionParameter
ConvertEmptyStringToNull="True"
DefaultValue="0"
Direction=" InputOutput "
Name="pAppId"
SessionField="app_id"
Size="integer"
Type="String" />
</asp:SqlDataSource>
For some reason the select parameter pAddId is getting set to null and get the following error when the content page is loaded If I hard code the value it works RA-01036: illegal variable name/number Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. I am getting a list but there is no null value.Within this query I would like to get only one NULL value at the top and then the list.How to do this? Explicitly I am not allowed to give a null value in the table in DB.

what i would like to do is when the value of my sqldatasource is returned, then if it is null, run a code, in my case, redirect them to the login page, heres my code:
string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["PokemonPlanetConnectionStrings"].ConnectionString;
string insertSql = "SELECT * FROM LoggedInUsers WHERE UserId = @UserId";
using (SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
[Code]....
Now what i would simply like to do is, if the select statement searches the database, and the result is not found, the simply redirect them to "register.aspx"

I have a FormView which is bound to an SQLDataSource. When a user clicks on a save button the form, I need to write any changes made to the FormView back to the table.
I have a Stored Procedure on my MSSQL 2005 database that should be executed when the user clicks on the save button.
It appears the Update is firing, but when I trap the DbCommand object in the SQLDataSource's 'Updating' event, all of the parameters that should be passed to the Stored Procedure are coming through as NULLs. Consequently, the Stored Procedure isn't updating anything.
In the click event of the save button I'm explicitly firing the SQLDataSource's Update method:
[Code]....
The parameters in the SQLDataSource <UpdateParameters></UpdateParameters> section appear to be correct.
Can anyone give me an idea on what to investigate to figure out why it appears the Update is only picking up NULLs?

I have a SqlDataSource connected to database and use a parametrized query to fetch out data.Query has got a very large varchar field on which i have to perform a search.To make search, i have 2 combobox and a textbox organized in this way
MAIN CATEGORY (combobox)-> CATEGORY TYPE(combobox) -> MODEL(textbox).
Based on main category choose, category type is filled from database. At last, it's added a "nothing" combobox item.Now i should search into big varchar field adding category type condition but, if nothing is specified, i should make identical search like all combobox value are selected. How should i, in your opinion, make this using SqlDataSource?

I have the logged-in user's Guid stored in a session variable. My understanding is that when the Guid is passed to the session variable it becomes a string. When I use the detailsview control I have to convert the session variable back to a guid and I've been doing it like this and it seems to work fine:
e.values("UserId") = session("LoggedInUserId")
Dim UserId as Guid = New Guid()
When I try to use the Insert() command after the following:
SqlDataSource3.InsertParameters("UserId").DefaultValue = Session("LoggedInUserId")
I get an "InvalidCastException" error with the comment "Conversion from type 'Guid' to type 'String' is not valid." I'm assuming the session variable needs to be converted to a type Guid since that's what I've had to do with the Detailsview control. I've tried a few different ways of converting the session variable back to a Guid so the insert command will work, but no matter which method of conversion I try I get errors such as "value of type system.guid cannot be converted to 'string'. I'm confused because I thought I was supposed to convert it from a string to a Guid. The "UserId" parameter is a non-primary key uniqueidentifier in the database.

I'm using Enterprise library, but the idea is the same. I have a SqlStringCommand and the sql is constructed using StringBuilder in the forms of "insert into table (column1, column2, column3) values (@param1-X, @param2-X, @parm3-X)" + " ";where "X" reprents a "for loop" about 700 rows like so
[Code]....
So after all is done, I have 700 insert statements in one batch and of course, I did another 700 loops and added the values to those parameters. It runs fine and fast for a few days. However, last night, suddenly I get this error

I have a stored procedure that creates a dynamic query. Sometimes the query is not built because there are no elements in the dynamic query. When the aspx page loads the SqlDataSource throws an error that the query is malformed. How can I catch this error, and handle it with a default message, before it returns the error to the aspx page?

I get the Erorr: Input String was NOT a correct format.
The first three controlparameters are STRINGS and they work fine.
However the last two populate the controlparameter from text boxes that can only accept numbers and decimal point.
First the text boxes for {3} and {4} string parameters in the SQL filterexpression:

And then the SQLDatasource control parameters[Code]....
The last two control parameters are the ones is question as they feed {3} and {4} parameters in the filter expression, NOTICE how I set the type="double".The data input is expected to be like 152.25 or 3.6 or 4 etc,So why am I getting this error: [Code]....

i couldnt find a specific answer to this question, i am relatively new to .net :)
i have a gridview that is displaying data from a sqldatasource in my page_load event. i need to loop through the records and update each value of a particular column BEFORE being set into the GridView.
i have tried converting to a data set and looping through updating the values, however it seems that one i initially run my query the values get set right into the GridView and i can't update them after that.
Do I need to add one of the GridView functions like Databound and do the loop in there?

It should have selectcommand, updatecommand, deletecommand and insertcommand. Stored procedures are created for that. Help is needed to make it. .

This is not my solution. I actually compiled it here with proper example. So I don't take any credit for the solution. In the past I have used GridView to insert recordsbut not using ObjectDataSource. Mostly I did it by catching RowCommand event of GridView and call the appropriate function. This time I was adamant using ObjectDataSource to Insert in Gridview. GridView doesn't support Insert so it does not actually instantiate OBjectDataSourceView automatically for Insert operation
So here is the soloution, catch the RowCommand event of gridview, get the ObjectDataSourceView, create orderedDictionary, add entries to ordered dictionary, call insert function of ObjectDataSourceView instead of ObjectDataSource. Here is the RowCommand event of the gridview
[Code]....
Here is the ObjectDataSource

Here is the business object class
