Forms Data Controls :: How To Update Multiple Tables With A SQLDataSource
Mar 3, 2011
I have 2 tables
One:Table Name Rider With columns RiderID,LName,City
Two:Table Name Car With columns CarID,RiderID,Color
What I would like to be able to do is to allow the users to do an UPDATE on both tables.
Like if you crreated a SQLDataSource using just one table as it's source. You can use that SQLDataSource for a gridview.
Then in the gridview you can display all the data from the table but you can also EDIT all the data in the table through the gridview.
But if I create a SQLDataSource using 2 table joining them together with an INNER JOIN with a Primary Key in one table and a Foriegn Key in the other table. I can still use this SQLDataSource with a GridView to display the data but I can't EDIT the data through the gridview for the 2 tables.
Is there anyway to do this using a SQLDataSource and GridView?
OR is there another way to accomplish this?

I have a stored procedure that returns 3 tables within the single recordset it returns. If I set a SqlDataSource to get data from this procedure, it works, but it only returns the first table. I want to have a GridView display the data from the 2nd or 3rd table using a SqlDataSource, but I can't figure out how to specify a particular table.
While there are some posts discussing this out there, I can't get a definitive answer about whether or not this is even possible (?). In a worst-case scenario, I can create another SP that only returns the 3rd table - but that creates a little maintenance headache that I would prefer to avoid.

I have a asp:DetailsView control with the first column are the field headers and the second column is the record details for a given user.
The DetailsView is bound from 4 tables, I need to be able to edit/amend any field. Is there another way I can achieve this from the DetailsView? Would I need to create templates for each table entry then Update SET on each template, would that do it?

Is it possible to use a SQLDataSource to populate a gridview but not use the SQLDataSource for Updating?
I wanted to add the update code in the Gridview_RowUpdating event since it is a complex update I need to do.
I get this message when i click the update button
Updating is not supported by data source 'SqlDataSource1' unless UpdateCommand is specified.

i have several different sqldatasources on my .aspx page which are linked to my gridview. so sqldatasource1 - when the btn "all" is clicked displayed all the records in the gridview, if another button "btnsearch" is clicked it displays the records based on the query passed in to the gridview. i have paging enabled on the gridview but when i go to the second or third page, i have to double click the number before it displays the records, how do i get the paging to work with a specific datasource depending on if the user wants all the records to be displayed or just part? , the datagrid loads up with all the data on rendering.

I have 10 tables in MSSQL I want to select some info from this tables and show on a webpage (formview maybe(based on user selection)). Also, Id like user to be able to EDIT this info, and it should go back to database.
The problem is that: the realtionships are pretty comprehensive. In sql management studio I saw awesome view creation, where u can drag and drop tables and select just the field u need, and it automatically do all joins for you.
View would work perfect for me, but i need to update database back. Maybe I can use linq classes?
I mean, its easy, but it takes a lot of time to do it by hand programatically. Is there some dragandgrop-like feature in visual studio?
what is the easiest way to bind multiple tables in one place with crud operations available?
sql datasource supports only 1 table at a time.
I Found on the web that we can use stored procedure? Do I need two stored procedures? for select and update? how we are going to bind update procedure with textobxes where user is going to edit info? Do you have some samples?

I'm having a gridview in my aspx page with checkbox, User can select one or more than one record(s) at a time and clicks on delete button, Then i'm constructing an object of my DTO and adding all the checked row's Primary Key (DataKeyNames - GUID's in my case) to a serializable class and generating an XML and sending it as parameter to the Stored Procedure.
My Doubt is, can i bulk delete all the rows from database table those are present in my XML document??
If it works, I can do bulk update with XML only, i already did bulk insertion by generating an XML..
My Another Question is, Will it affect the performance? Each time when i construct an DTO object and adding it to the Generic List?
Which one is better, I mean ObjectDataSource or SQLDataSource or my XML method?

I have two tables, Customer and CustomerPhone.
Single record in Customer can have multiple CustomerPhone records. As you see in the image below, Phone and Fax resides in CustomerPhone table whereas the rest of the fields resides in Customer table. If user want to edits a customer record, obviously i will have to update the record in Customer table and at least two records from CustomerPhone (Phone and Fax).
I could write two update statements, one Update customerPhone and the second update Customer table. Is there a better solution?

I have a problem in getting my gridview to update. The datasource gets its data from 2 related tables using the following select statement:
SELECT StudentSubject.StudentID, Students.[1stName], Students.Surname, Students.Grade, StudentSubject.Subject, StudentSubject.GradeOverall, StudentSubject.ReportYear, StudentSubject.ReportSession, StudentSubject.Criteria1Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria2Grade,
StudentSubject.Criteria3Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria4Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria5Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria6Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria7Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria8Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria9Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria10Grade, StudentSubject.Comment
FROM (Students INNER JOIN StudentSubject ON Students.StudentID = StudentSubject.StudentID)
WHERE (StudentSubject.Subject = ?) AND (StudentSubject.ReportYear = ?) AND (Students.Grade = ?) AND (StudentSubject.ReportSession = ?)
The ? stem from combo box controls which I use to filter the results So far so good!
However, when I try to update the data in just one of the tables, nothing happens, no error, just no update. The update statement I'm using is:
UPDATE StudentSubject SET GradeOverall = ?, Criteria1Grade = ?, Criteria8Grade = ?, Criteria7Grade = ?, Criteria6Grade = ?, Criteria5Grade = ?, Criteria4Grade = ?, Criteria3Grade = ?, Criteria2Grade = ?, Criteria9Grade = ?, Criteria10Grade = ?, Comment =?
WHERE (StudentID = ?) AND (Subject = ?) AND (ReportYear = ?) AND (ReportSession = ?)
I've tried this with a similar setup with just on table and it works fine.
<asp:AccessDataSource ID="DSGrid" runat="server"
DataFile="D:RW docsVisual Studio 2008WebSitesFellbach ReportsApp_DataReports - Copy.mdb"
SelectCommand="SELECT StudentSubject.StudentID, Students.[1stName], Students.Surname, Students.Grade, StudentSubject.Subject, StudentSubject.GradeOverall, StudentSubject.ReportYear, StudentSubject.ReportSession, StudentSubject.Criteria1Grade, StudentSubject.Criteria2Grade,

i want to build a datagrid bound to a datatable with several columns. One column has only a dropdownlist with the number of the rows in the datatable.
Here a samplescreenshot:

I know how to bind the columns to a grid and its no problem to create such a dropdown list with the content for me, too. But i dont know how to sort the complete datatabl after changing one value of one dropdown listbox.
So, how can i resort the values of a datatable column based on a given value and the datarow id?

I've got a single table, with project information and schedule information. To make the data easier to present, I created a tab control with two panels (a detailsview in each). The first tab is for project info, the second tab is for schedule info (again, all fields in the same table). The problem is, if i change info in both tabs, and then hit the update button, only the data from one tab is added to the table. I think this problem is simple to fix, and boils down to the way I have the page organized, but I can't quite figure it out.
I've boiled my code down to the following conceptualized structure:
[code]....
When you click the update button, you return to the listview, but with only the information from your current tab saved. How can I get it to update from both detailsviews?

I have a .NET 1 web app that is using a Oracle database, the web app has a page of table names that allows the users to select, there are 101 tables listed on the page. When the user clicks on a table name, it takes them to a page that shows user friendly column headers, the table data, etc. Is there a way to use one GridView to do this and show the user friendly column headers instead of creating 101 pages or 101 user controls and show that control based on the table passed into the page?
for example: the user clicks table 22, I want my gridview to look like this
Buyer's Name State City Zip Code Phone Number
if they click table 55 I want them to see this
Product Wholesale Price MSRP Sale Price On Sale (check box)
instead of showing the users
BuyersFullName BuyersState BuyersCity BuyersZipCode PhoneNumber, etc
and so I, I would like to use 1 gridview on one page if possible and build the grid on the "fly", We have the user friendly column headers in a table.
So my questions are:
is this possible, if so, what is the best approach in doing this
from a scalabilty level and maintenance level, would the 1 gridview be worth for all 101 (and growing tables), or would building a seperate user control for each table be better?

I have two tables, and i want to display any newly created row on my home page from either table in the same control. Currently, i have two gridviews, but i want the data from both tables be displayed together.

I have a listview that shows the user the details of the members who have sent friendship request. The table from which the data come has two fields namely, sender_id[id of the one who sends friendship request] and receiver_id[id of the one to whom the request is sent].
There will be two columns in the listview. The first would show the pic and the name of the user. The problem is that how am I going to show the pic and the name if the table from where the data come does not contain these info. I know that the sender_id can be used to fetch the pic and name of the sender, but how should it be done?
Earlier I would do something like <%#Eval("fieldName")%>. But in the above described scenario the field is not present in the current table but the other one.

I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with SQL Server Express databases in my .net 3.5 website
I have three tables I'd like to make entries to when the user completes a wizrd i've setup on a web form.
The First Step - The user enters basic information about their "Case". The table looks like so:
db_Cases - CaseId PK auto int, CustomerId, etc fields
The Second Step - The user enters information about the "Debtors" that are related to this "Case". Think of this as being products....The only difference is these records wont be used over and over again like a product would. The user may need to enter data about several "Debtors", just like if you needed to show several different products on an invoice. For example the user may need to enter information about a husband and wife. This means two entries in the "Debtors" table. The table looks like so:
db_Debtors - DebtorId PK auto int, etc fields
The Third Step - Here's my problem. This step needs to make entries into a third table called "CaseDetails". Again, this is just like if you were creating an invoice with several different products on it, where you would want to get a subtotal of each product's cost. The table looks like so:
db_CaseDetails - CaseDeatailId PK auto int, CaseId int, DebtorId, int
* When this table is later viewed, It will reflect all "Debtors" attached to the specific "Case" being viewed.
The first two steps aren't a problem, I pretty well have that handled in the wizard. BUT How do I create the entries in the "CaseDetails" table when the user finishes?
My idea right now is..... Considering the "Debtors" will be re-used but only on rare occations, I'm thinking I should just add the "CaseId" that was created in step one, to the "Debtors" table at the same time the "Debtor" is created. So the table would look like so.
db_Debtors - DebtorId PK auto int, CaseId int, Name, Address, etc

I have been trying to make this work for a while, but I have not been yet able to figure this put. I am using VS 2008 and mysql database. I wrote a query and checked to see if it works in database. It does.
I have a gridview, whose select command is that query. But for some reason, I just get all the rows from one table only. I rechecked my datasource and it is ok. I read on some discussions that it is NOT possible to have data from two tables in a gridview. Is that true? If that is not true, how can I have data from multiple tables in a gridview? Or any other web control for that matter.
