I have a multiline textbox that by default, is set to ReadOnly. I would like a button on the page to change the control to allow it to be edited. I would like this code to run on the client side because the page renders slowly and I'd like to avoid the post back.
The problem I'm having is the javascript code that I wrote to remove the readonly attribute appears to have no effect. I posted a stripped down example that illustrates the problem for your review.

I've been searching all day for a solution to this, but nothing has worked.
Here's my scenario: I'm binding the gridview to a datatable. One of the columns is a textbox that will accept user input.
When a "submit" button is clicked, I need to loop through all the rows, get the textbox's text, and add them all together. Simple, right?

The issue is I want the PLAYERID GV column to be READONLY but I get a runtime error when updating if the PLAYERID is READONLY.
I get the error "

I need to change ReadOnly from false to true for one column in GridView depending on who the user is. In my particular case it is a BoundField (also I would like to know how to do it for a Template field as well) and DataField is "dteRequired". Some of my columns are display only fields so i have set them to "read only = true" Everything seems fine when the page loads but when i click update, the columns that were editable update fine but the ones set to read only have now updated the databasewith a null value.
