Forms Data Controls :: What's The Best Grid Control For Paging Without Creating A Stored Procedure
Jan 6, 2011
I have been using the GridView control, to display data, but now my two datasources (Informix, and VisualM/Mumps) makes it very difficult to create a store procedure to with paging. Is there a better data grid, that will allow my users to scroll/search the current data set?

I am looking to have 1 Gridview/Datagrid (which ever is now more appropriate) on my code in front,
the columns will need to be dynamically generated, with a "Always present" checkbox control with the default being checked
Each column will be a Label type - so not editable
The Idea is the user will tick or until each item that they wish to submit to the database.
I am able to dynamically populate the control - using new bouncontol, but I have been unable to then obtain the selected data.
My codebehind is below
[Code]....

I am using grid view control with paging Like-:
protected
void grdUpdateColumn_RowCreated(object
sender, GridViewRowEventArgs
e)
{
if (e.Row.RowType ==
DataControlRowType.Pager)
{
DropDownList ddl
= new
DropDownList();
//adds variants of pager size
ddl.Items.Add(
"5"
);
ddl.Items.Add(
"10"
);
ddl.Items.Add(
"20"
);
ddl.Items.Add(
"50");
ddl.AutoPostBack = true;
//selects item due to the GridView current page size
ListItem
li = ddl.Items.FindByText(grdUpdateColumn.PageSize.ToString());
if (li !=
null
)
ddl.SelectedIndex = ddl.Items.IndexOf(li);
ddl.SelectedIndexChanged +=
new
EventHandler(ddl_SelectedIndexChanged);
//adds dropdownlist in the additional cell to the pager table
Table pagerTable = e.Row.FindControl("pagerTable")as
Table;
//e.Row.Cells[0].Controls[0] as Table;
TableCell cell =
new
TableCell
();
cell.Style[
"padding-left"] =
"15px"
;
cell.Controls.Add(
new
LiteralControl("Page
Size:"
));
}
protected
void ddl_SelectedIndexChanged(object
sender, EventArgs
e)
{
//changes page size
grdUpdateColumn.PageSize = int.Parse(((DropDownList)sender).SelectedValue);
ViewState["Index"]
= 1;
//binds data source
this.GetChangesRecord();
}
Grid view Like -:
<PagerTemplate>
<asp:Table
ID="pagerTable"
runat="server"><asp:TableRow>
</asp:TableRow>
It's working fine but problem is that if i select 10 and record from dropdown and record also has 10 then paging is not showing.
That's mean i select 10 from dropdown and record is 10 then dropdown also disable with numbers, suppose i need to select again 5 then i can't do this.

I want to have a paging mechanism. Its a bit hard to show all data and tables for this query but this is the current resulset.
As you can see Id has several duplicate entries (EventId as well but thats as its supposed to be):
Rownum EventID Id UserId
1 22 10 03088B17-36B2-425C-BD08-13E63AF07254
2 22 10 03088B17-36B2-425C-BD08-13E63AF07254
3 22 11 39E49E5A-7A42-43B6-882C-B22EE4C0922A
4 22 11 39E49E5A-7A42-43B6-882C-B22EE4C0922A
5 22 12 15C405BB-BD9A-4C6A-BF21-A95763FAD613
6 22 12 15C405BB-BD9A-4C6A-BF21-A95763FAD613
7 22 13 15C405BB-BD9A-4C6A-BF21-A95763FAD613
8 22 13 15C405BB-BD9A-4C6A-BF21-A95763FAD613
9 22 15 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
10 22 15 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
Now, I want to have paging and I'm doing that like this:
[code]...
In thew above query, when I leave out seltion of the RowNum column (so instead having: "SELECT distinct eventid,id,userid FROM") only 3 records are shown when I have a maximum pagesize of 5 passed to the @maximumRows variable.
What can I do to have exactly 5 records shown?

I am in need of getting the correct sysntax for being able to use paging with a datalist whose data is being generated by a SQL Datasource and a stored procedure inside the aspx(asp.net VB...Not C#) page. A Gridview or any other rigid control that does not allow full control and layout will not work so I have to use the datalist. I have the datalist working perfectly but I need to add paging. I did some searching and found a good solution. It was a C# solution, in particular the code behind syntax so I used a code converter to convert it to VB. However, as I am not an experienced coder I need help converting the portion for handling the datalist. I am fairly confident I have the buttons on the aspx page worked out. I will ask that if you se something I need to do besides the section(5) I have listed please offer suggestions. So that you can help me better I have boken the code out into sections where I'm listing the code I copied, my code and the section I need help with. I think at a minimum I will have to change the references of Repeater to Datalist.
The section I need help with is section 5 where the original autor is referencing items generated in the Repeater where he used XML. As I said I'm using a SQL Datasource with a Datalist so I truly don't understand what I need to change to get the code behind to work with my Datalist. As always I appreciate all of you guys and ladies help. And also as always I will ask to please provide the actual code to type in because telling me how to do it just won't help very much. Sorry about that.
Here is what I have:

I have a grid page which has a datasource as a stored procedure. The grid page shows the fields obtained after executing the stored procedure.Now, there is a field called 'PURCHASE PRICE' on the stored procedure which can have empty values.If the grid page have that field empty, it should appear as the text box so that the users can enter some numeric values and run the page.

I have an application that uses an aps:GridView. The GridView is populated using a DataSource that calls a Stored Procedure. The DataSource passes parameters to the Stored Procedure based on some text fields. The page has been running slower than wanted, so I was doing some checking.
I ran SQL Profiler while loading the page, and saw the Stored Procedure was being called twice. I stepped through the code and found out that in the Page Load Complete event was where this was happening. In this event, I set the value of a parameter for the Stored Procedure, then did a DataBind on the GridView to pick up the data. As I was stepping through the code, I watched the SQL Profiler. When I got to the step of setting the parameter, the Stored Procedure had not yet been called. When I stepped through that and got to the DataBind command (before running that step), the SQL Profiler showed that the Stored Procedure had been called. Then I did the DataBind and the StoredProcedure was called again.
My question is, how do I get the parameters set, and get the GridView data bound, and only call the StoredProcedure once? If I comment out the DataBind step, the StoredProcedure never does get called (which seems really strange to me...).

I'm using VS 2008 and SQL 2008.
I have created the tables and the stored procedures in SQL 2008.
In VS 2008, I created DataSet1.xsd in App_Code and created the connectionString in web.config file.
Then when I go into the DataSet1.xsd and try to add a TableAdapter, strange things happened.
First I chose the data connection, then selected "Use existing stored procedure", then there was nothing listed in the dropdownlists (in Select, Insert, Update, or Delete).
I'm sure the connectionString is correct because if I choose "Use SQL statement" and type in a "select * from mytable1", the TableAdapter can be created without any problem.

keeping 1000 records in a datatable in session and do paging using that?
Or
doing paging in stored procedure level and requesting 35 records each time?
more info:
datatable of 40 columns
number of users is 200 users
7 application are running on IIS
Oracle DB server is not the same server for IIS
Edit: the user may update a row, and submit it to database. which will refresh the grid by requesting the whole data from database.
Edit2: Every user is loading different datatable which coming from same table in database

Initially, I have tried to use stored procedure. But I changed my mind and preferred to call sql query in codebase with command text. However, it stills tries to find initially-called stored procedure (which is neither called or exists).I think that it is related caching. But I tried it with different browsers it did not work.What might be the reason?
