How Much Data Is Recommended For Web Application To Make Transaction At A Time
Feb 14, 2011
I want to know how much data is recommended to make transaction in web application at a time. I have 30,000 data. I want to insert and update in different transaction. When I do 30,000 data update at one time, some times it becomes hang web application, sometimes, it becomes timeout. So I want to know what the best amount of data to do Insert or Update at a time. It may be 1000/5000.

i was wondering if i could capture transaction time automatically. e.g. if form has a grid submit button and user clicks submit button to submit changes on a grid to database, is there a way to capture start time when user clicked the button and reply user got back from page?

trying to switch to better coding practises, I am totally confused about which path to choose. For the past year I was just coding through classic asp coding methodology. Now I know about things as
3 tier custom 3 tier with Strongly typed data sets N tier applications Custom entity objects and so on
Can someone recommend me an approach for designing web applications from these? Some book or tutorial reference with simple CRUD application that would help me. I am currently stuck with strongly typed data sets as I cant find CRUD tutorials with that approach. I would like to just choose the right approach and build on it.

i'm dealing with an ASP.NET 4.0 Web Forms Application in which the DAL is built with a combination of LINQ-SQL and classic ADO.NET (for auditing transactions, and bulk updates).
I have an admin page on the site which performs an update on a bunch of records (could be thousands), and not to mention there is T-SQL triggers in place on those records. Needless to say, its a killer of an update.
So of course, the page is timing out. The update transaction is performing with the following code:
db.ExecuteCommand("UPDATE [tblFoo] SET [IsFoo] = 0 WHERE [Bar] = {0}", bar.Id);
So it's a classic ADO.NET bulk update.
What i've tried to do is make the call to this method asynchronous, by firing off a thread on the button click on the form:
[code]...
The method OnMyAsyncMethod simply executes the above ADO.NET call.
This solved the UI problem, being the page now posts back and refreshes immediately. But then around 30 seconds lateri see that wonderful little flashing light on my Visual Studio toolbar - "an unhandled exception has occured, would you like to attach to process, etc".
So of course, now the actual call in the DAL is timing out.
Am i doing this wrong - is there a way i can perform the update transaction (db.ExecuteCommand) totally asynchrously?
Hopefully you see what im trying to do - i just need to fire off a killer of a T-SQL transaction. The only thing i need back from the call is the number of rows updated.

I've got all of my ASP.NET requests wrapped in a Session and a Transaction that gets commited only at the very end of the request. At some point during execution of the request, I would like to insert an object and make it visible to other potential threads - i.e. split the insertion into a new transaction, commit that transaction, and move on. The reason is that the request in question hits an API that then chain hits another one of my pages (near-synchronously) to let me know that it processed, and thus double submits a transaction record, because the original request had not yet finished, and thus not committed the transaction record.
So I've tried wrapping the insertion code with a new SessionScope, TransactionScope(TransactionMode.New), combination of both, flushing everything manually, etc. However, when I call Refresh on the object I'm still getting the old object state. Here's some code sample for what I'm seeing:
Post outsidePost = Post.Find(id); // status of this post is Status.Old
using (TransactionScope transaction = new TransactionScope(TransactionMode.New))
{
Post p = Post.Find(id);
p.Status = Status.New; // new status set here
p.Update();
SessionScope.Current.Flush();
transaction.Flush();
transaction.VoteCommit();
}
outsidePost.Refresh();
// refresh doesn't get the new status, status is still Status.Old

So, after all and after all these projects that have been done. What is the best way and I should consider as standard in the furute to start any further ASP.NET Projects that are database driven.
I have done many using
1. Store procedures and classes
2. One class to handle all the add,delete,update ...etc functions
3. ADO.NET
4. Using sql statements directly on the code (I know not recommended, it was my first project) :))
..and so on
What method you recommend in the future that will save me code and errors and optimize my application speed as well.

Now my problem is how to make my application to go to that url and download data and save it in server.

From time to time my application crashes and I start getting all sorts of weird errors like "object reference not set to an instance of an object", that then turns to "failed to enable constraints..", etc. Sometimes then the application starts to work again properly by itself, and sometimes not until I restart IIS, after which everything is ok again.

I have a page on which I generate a load of html which is used in a html email.
Here is a bit of the code ...
Code:
[code]....
Because of the problems getting the email to look the same in various email clients, I need to convert that chunk of html to a pdf - so I can create the pdf on the fly, save it and attach it to the email.
Can anyone suggest a simple pdf generator that will just take a chunk of html and create a pdf from it? The ones I have looked at so far have what looks like a steep learning curve with hundreds of features I don't need.

I've got an ASP.NET web project which connect to an SQL Server 2005 DataBase.I think that I'm doing the part of the database connection awfull because everytime I need to do a query (select for example) I'm creating a new connection, opening the connection, creating the command, executing the query, using the results and closing the connection.
Is the rigth way to open a connection in the start of the application and closing at the end?? How can I do that?? I'm retrieving data but what will happen to database server when the application will be used by many people?

I'm thinking of using ASP.NET and MySQL together on a large project. Does anyone have any experience in using these two on a large scale and are there any aspects I should be wary of? If there is a chance that there could be compatibility issues, then I may be prepared to purchase an MSSQL license, but I'd rather go the free route right now. In theory it's possible, but how easy is it to transfer a MySQL database to and MSSQL database in the future?(I'll make this a CW if requested).

It is hosted in IIS6 and connected to SQL 2000.

As I understood, IIS and SQL server will cause app frozen if they are not in correct configuration.

Does anyone have any applications that they recommend, whether they be downloadable or web apps, that can neatly format your .aspx code? I've had limited success trying to adjust the formatting preferences with Visual Studio itself, and spend a lot of time manually indenting/unindenting lines.
As a clarification, I'm looking for something to format the web page code, not the vb code-behind file.

What control do you use for detail data transaction ?
i am thinking of GridView, however, it lacks of add new row function and lack of bulkediting.
then i found RealWorld BulkEditGridView, it's a good in handling bulkedit, and has new row function, however, it can function well only on load. the problem will appear if i add up a new button, which function to add up InsertRowCount property, a row is created as expected, however, all my previous entry in "new row" are gone.

-continuation of my question:
example for HumanResource. if an employee's contract is about to be expired, the system will notify the HR system with a messagebox and at the same time with a sound/alert, like a "buzz" or "beep" to notify the HR that the employee should renew their contract.

it is apparent that "string builder" is better for building large string compared to sMyString = sMyString + "something";
what is a better way to search large in memory datasets? (like the example above - i know i could use loops, is there another way that i dont now about?)

I'm building a Data Access Layer for my asp.net application. I would like to be able to share connection between different classes in order to manage transaction, but I don't know how to do that.
Example:
I have 2 classes, Order and OrderDetail.
I will call my DAL Order class for a SQL insert of a new order.
Inside the Insert method, I want to call my OrderDetail class to insert my order's details, and I would do that with same connection and transaction.
