Installation :: .Net Configuration - Fails To Create NETDB.MDF?
Apr 3, 2010
I have installed Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition along with SQL Server Express 2008 on Windows Vista and Windows 7. On Windows Vista, when I click the "ASP.Net Configuration" icon in the Solution Explorer and then click on the "Security" link, a new ASPNETDB.MDF file is created in the App_Data folder of any new project I have open. The same actions on my "Windows 7 Ultimate" machine will result in a message along the lines of "Your Data Source is not configured properly. This may be because the server has an invalid name or you do not have the proper credentials or you do not have the proper permissions"(not at Windows 7 machine right now so this isn't verbatim)

I am having problems getting the security.aspx to load up on my primary development computer which is using Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows IE 8. Clicking on the ASP.NET Configuration icon from the IDE in the Solution Explorer within Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition loads up default.aspx with no problem. But when I click on the "Security" hyperlink to access "security.aspx" I get a message along the lines of "The configured SQL data source provider is not properly configured". It goes on to state a list of potential reasons for this problem. One that includes not having the proper credentials or permissions. Im almost 100% sure it has something to do with permissions because I can't even get to the "security.aspx" page from opening a new empty project. I have recently installed Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition on my laptop which is running Vista with all latest updates and this issue does "not" exists. I can click the "ASP.NET" icon, load up "default.aspx" and click "Security" and it loads the page with absolutely no issues.
I have discovered a weird workaround but I don't like having to do this. If I add the following lines to my "web.config" file from any given project I can get to the "security.aspx" page without getting any SQL messages about improper configuration or permissions.
<<remove "LocalSqlServer">
<add
name="LocalSqlServer"
connectionString="data
source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
Basically, what I have to do to get to the security page to load without error is add a remove statement and then I just cut'n'paste almost the exact same connectionString from machine.config in the Microsoft.netFrameWorkV2.0.5027config directory. This does away with the "Improperly configured SQL datasource message" and gets me a new error message along the lines of "Could not create a SQL instance". My memory is fuzzy on exact error messages since Im not at development computer right now. However, when I change the User Instance attribute from true to false, then I have success at last.

On Windows XP I installed the .Net Framework 2.0 and my test aspx page worked fine. I then installed the .Net framework Service Pack 2 and then it breaks .Net. I get a Server Unavailable message and when I run aspnet_regiis -i I get a C0000005 error with message 'The Application failed to initialize properly.'
FYI, I have Symantec Endpoint Protection installed on my PC.

I'm using IIS 7.5 on Server 2008 R2 to configure a .Net 4-based website. I've used the Web Deployment Tool to import a known-good, 32-bit Windows 7-based IIS server package. As far as I can tell, the 2008-based IIS server and application pool are now properly configured to use .Net 4, and that the server setup is identical to that of the known-good configuration.The problem I'm having is that when I attempt to load a page on the new site, IIS returns a compilation error of the .Net framework's web.config. The error is copied below. It's my understanding that a properly-configured server shouldn't have any problem compiling this file, so I'm looking for some pointers on what I can do to resolve this. I've verified that:
both .Net 4 and .Net 3.5.1 are installed on the server, the 'default' page at http://localhost loads properly http://localhost/Services, the root folder of my application, can be browsed commenting out the offending System.Xml.Linq namespace simply results in a compilation error of some other namespace in the same group.
Server Error in '/Services' Application.

asp.net 3.5...
I changed a method from public static void LogError(Exception exception) to public static Guid LogError(Exception exception) and once deployed the app throws the error
Method not found: 'System.Guid DefaultTechnologies.Portal.BusinessLogic.Common.LogError(System.Exception)'.
When deployed I sent all non-third party *.dll to be dropped into the bin folder. Runs fine from my machine :) but fails like crap everywhere else.

Several production websites running for months with no problems, all of sudden now fail to compile sporadically.
The compiler will generate errors:
ASPNET: Make sure that the class defined in this code file matches the 'inherits' attribute, and that it extends the correct base class (e.g. Page or UserControl).
On master page code behind files that it did not before.
In addition, this error will go away (most of the time) if we recycle the application pool.

I have used a dll named MARCEngine, which is used to read Marc data. I use a method named MARC2MARC21XML which converts a normal marc file to an XML file.
The problem is it works great on my local IIS, but when I upload it to the production server, it only generates the root node and not the child nodes.
Here is a snippet of my sample page :
[Code]....
Asp.net has the permissions to access the files geneated.

We have an ASP.NET forum (Community Server) installed in a subdirectory of a site. For some odd reason we occasionally get:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'
If we open the web.config file and save it again without modifying anything in it, the login works again. This happens with intervals of 1-3 days.

I've written a simple webservice and am running it locally to test it out. Right now, my settings are as follows:
From [URL]
Settings When Hosted Externally
<system.net>
<mailSettings>
<smtp from="noreply@domain.net">
<network host="smtpout.secureserver.net" password="<password>" port="25" userName="noreply@domain.net"/>
</smtp>
</mailSettings>
</system.net>
I've tried these settings, and also tried explicitly setting the properties of my SmtpClient object @ run-time. On send, I receive the following exception
"Failure sending mail. Unable to connect to the remote server - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 64.202.165.58:25"

I recently installed VWDE 2010 and SQLE 2008 R2 and have built a basic site, but when I try to launch the Web Site Administration Tool, it fails to come up in a browser window. The server starts and I can right click on that and choose "Open in Web Browser", but when I do that an error message immediately shows up saying, an error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again with no other information given. When I click on "How do I Use this Tool?" in the top-right corner of the window, it immediately says the following:
Tool Has Timed Out
As a security measure, the Web Site Administration Tool times out after a period of inactivity. Changes to machine.config or web.config may also result in the tool needing to be restarted. To continue configuring your web site, restart the tool. The same message immediately comes up no matter what tab I click on. I have searched the internet and have made sure that the path doesn't have any spaces or non-alphabetic characters, run aspnet_regsql, restarted the IDE as well as the computer, but nothing works.

I have a solution that has 2 projects in it... Project #1 is a class I created some time back to deal with the basic data connection and passing data back and forth.
The 2nd project is the new current project (web site).
Everything works fine in local mode but after I have compiled Project #1 and created a referance in Project #2 then compiled Project #2 and published to the server...
I am running on Windows 7 64bit, .NET 4.0, Access 2010, SQLExpress (loging only), C#... I have rebuilt Project #1 several times as an x86, AnyCPU, and x64... they all give the same result...
I get the following error when the web site is run.

We need to get MVC 2.0 installed on multiple servers. When we use the exe file AspNetMVC2_VS2008.exe to install MVC 2.0 it checks for prereqs. One of the prereqs ins VS 2008 SP1.
Now when we use the MSI file AspNetMVC2.msi to do the installation, MVC 2.0 is installed without complaining about VS 2008 SP1.
The exe file checks for prereqs, while the msi doesn't.
My questions is, do we really need VS 2008 SP1 installed along side MVC 2.0? If so why?

If application is started without debugging - it runs smoothly, when I press F5 I get: "Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging. Click Help for more information"I noticed that problems are caused by URL Rewrite section in web.config:
<rewrite>
<rules>
<clear />
<rule name="LowerCaseRule" stopProcessing="true">
<match url="[A-Z]" ignoreCase="false" />
when I comment it out - I can start debugging. Also debugging works on VS's built-in web server.I'm running Win7 64 bit, VS 2010, application's framework is 4.0, in IIS application has ASP.NET 4.0 Intergrated pool set

I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and try to add ASPNETDB.mdf database to my web site project. However, the following message appears: "Connections to SQL Server database files (.mdf) require SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2008 Express to be installed and running on the local computer. The current version of SQL Server Express can be downloaded at the following URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125883".

Until last week it was going smoothly. Now when I make changes to any of the forms it still shows up fine when I hit F5 to run it, but when I install it on the server none of the changes show up. I have uninstalled the site and reinstalled it but the result is the same.
I am using VSTS 2008 and I have tried building this on two machines with the same result. The solution contains a web deployment project and a setup project. Both of which were working fine early last week. This isn't a configuration specific issue because it happens on both. I get no error messages.

I'm a long time PHP/MySQL developer.I've always used shared hosting with Apache.I'm used to using a control panel, setting up my ".htaccess", configuring my databases and I begin building websites.I have a major project I need to get started on that has to be built using ASP.NET. It also is going to require, at the very least, a virtual dedicated server for hosting. I have some minor expience with IIS 5.0, I have written basic programs in Visual Basic 6, and I have some experience programming in C++.I have no reason to learn older versions, so I am looking to learn on whatever is the newest version of IIS, Visual Web Developer, and anything else that is required.With my background, what would be the best way to approach this?
So far,I am looking at GoDaddy for Virtual Dedicated hosting, but if I pick them or somebody else, what next?Do I login and install the Visual Web Developer package or will it already be installed?Is the VWD package just for development and is there different software on the server?Will I need to install IIS or will it be installed? Should I learn IIS first or go through the tutorials for VWD?

To me this should be much easier, but I can't seem to retain the values that are put in the Insert template upon a validation failure or when the sql fails. This will prevent the user from having to retype everything agin in the event of a failure.
As you can see I am using the Sub Insert_Click and not using an insert through the wizard. so the fields are unbound textboxes on the form. There are 2 dropdowns that provide choices for the other fields.
I pasted in the code using the text only option becuase the format was getting messed up. I probably need more background on why the fields are blanking out.
