Launch Program On Server Through Web?

so I'm in a strange development situation and am a noob at the bits I'm tasked with - just to make life fun and interesting.
My fellow developer has written programs in VB.Net and placed them on the server. He wants a web front end that users can click a link and have that run the program on the server.
Sounds simple, but I've spent days searching the internet and found only two solutions one of which looks sketchy on security and the other is so complex I'm not sure how to make it fit my local variables.
I'm writing ASP.Net on an MVC Framework using C#.
So, in terms for the simple minded to understand, is there a way to do this? Are there links which I used the wrong keywords and completely missed?

SQL Server BIDS client 2005, when launched, displays a "Splash" screen that should allow selection of 1 of 3 apps. I am trying to get to Reporting Services but the launch skips right by and goes into Analysis Services.

I have an executable file that works fine by hand locally. It converts a file to another new file by some parameters. I'm using ASP.Net and that executable installed win2003 server sp2. I can use it from local but, I can't execute the program from a web browser using system.diagnosting.process. When I use that, I can see the process in task manager with user name "NETWORK SERVICE", and it won't dissappear without ending process by hand and won't work. I tried impersonation, try as a web service, edited local policies, apply all privilages, etc...

I have been trying to make a program work with our IIS server, but it's run into a tricky problem that's been driving me nuts. When I debug the program, everything works perfectly; users are able to log in and they see the appropriate content according to the user's role. When logging in from a remote location, however, the program seems to have trouble finding the users' roles. Users can log in, but they cannot see any role-specific information, so they are stuck on the login page forever.
I tried adding a line of code to find the roles of a particular user. In debug mode, it returned the roles correctly, but when accessed through the server, it returned an empty array that caused my site to crash.

Although I have seen dozens of forum questions relating to "Could not load type", none of the advice in them seemed to apply to my situation. I wrote a new web application using aspx.net VB 2005. It is tiny, with just 2 pages, 1 of which has no code-behind. It runs aok in the IDE but when I installed it on my pc (and also when installed on the production server), and tried to run it this error came up:

I checked the web site properties in IIS and the correct ASP.net version is specified: 2.0.50727. I checked the virtual path and it looks correct too: /EMTTrainingDatabase pageMain source code header looks like:

Some posters suggest that the bin is in the wrong folder or the bin doesn't contain the right contents. I don't have enough knowledge to evaluate this.

I have a VS2010 project that I want to move back and forth between an x86 and an x64 machine. On the x86 machine, several assemblies are located in Program Files, and the path of the assemblies are shown as c:Program Files...... When I move this project to the x64 machine, the same assemblies are located in C:Program Files (x86).... Is there a way that I can confugure VS2010 so I don't have to manually change the path when I move the project from one machine to another?

When I build it is fine. When i run the application it throws the error.
MyDataGrid is a unknown element.This error occurs due to compilation error or web.config does not exists. But there was no scenario like this.

I want to take first Full backup of my database then Differential backup of database automatically on a fixed interval of time and save it into my files of system. After that i want to upload these files on server. when uploading is successful then i want to delete these files from the system. I am not sure this is the forums but I dont know where to write this and this is an EMERGENCY ::I had windows 2003 server. on C: and I have installed windows 2008 server.I had SQL server installed and all of the database files stored inside c:program filessql server....PROBLEM is that after I installed 2008 server I can see 2 folders of program files one for x86 and the other for 64 bits.

I have an asp.net "search" screen which displays the results in a new browser window ewhen the user presses the submit button.
My problem is as follows:
User searches for "smith", presses submit, gets a new results window with "smith" results in.
User searches for "brown", presses submit, and the previous results window is reused.
Here's the code I call OnSubmit:

Is it possible to launch a VB sub from Java Script? I have tried a couple of options inclusive of:

The above generates an error: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method". On the VB side I have a protected sub named ViewDetail which validates the selected record and the displays all detail related to the record in a new page/window.

The above generates no error, but doesn't redirect to the new page/window either. The Page_Load event performs the record validation and subsequently loads the record's detail.
I am using an obout Grid's double click event (a java script at initiated at the client side) to record the value of the selected row and now want to open a page (performed at the server side) reflecting the detail of the relevant record.

My organization uses a CMD file to install updated files for a major enterprise application. Currently, we send out an email to users with a link to the file and instructions to run it, BUT inevitably users don't update their machines until their in field and try to start the app.
We're now liking the idea of using an ASPX page to prompt the users to run the updates and to capture the fact that the updates have been run. I realize that we can't capture the success or failure of the update. But we'd like to capture the user accessed the page.
Is it possible to embed into the markup for the page a link to the file on the local intranet that the users can click on to run the file?
The user accessing the page would capture that they did just that. We'd deal with wether or not the update was actually installed or if it failed later with them directly.

We have a company intranet and the powers that be think it would be nice to have a collection of icons/links representing the applications that most reps use (Outlook, Excel, few other apps).
The idea would be that if the application is installed, clicking the link/icon would launch the application on the client machine.
Anyone ever had a requirement like that and been successful implementing it?
Wanted to reach out to everyone before I go back and say no.
