MVC :: Development Server Doesn't Appear To Execute JQuery?
Aug 6, 2010
Experienced a really strange problem today. I added a jquery script to my MVC application to collapse sections of a View (via divs).
Pretty standard stuff, he showed me the script working before hand and it works.
However any time I would run my MVC app via Visual Studio the script would not work. I changed browsers, re-imported the code from source control and basically me and my co-worker banged our heads together for some time trying to figure out why the exact same code was running different on two machines.
Publishing the MVC app to our web server and running worked for both machines but for some bizarre reason when I ran it on my VS it never did.
One thought that came to mind is that by VS uses the cassini default lightweight webserver for debugging, whereas my co-worker is using IIS.
This seems to suggest then that the ASP Development server does not support JQuery. Is this true and if not, what could the problem be?

I have an ASP.NET (3.5) web page which calls a few web methods (SOAP based) using jQuery's .ajax method. The web methods implement 'ScriptMethod' attribute and return JSON data. The web service file (asmx) is local to the same project.
I noticed these web methods execute synchronously on the server which means they run sequentially and affect performance negatively, some methods are waiting, when some of them are slow.
I read this article and I am not sure if I understand that WebMethods which implement Scriptmethod can run synchronously only (they implement IHttpHandler not IHttpAsyncHandler).
If this is true, I might have to change the design. I am looking for other designs, maybe like using WCF, where the browser can call webmethods using JavaScript and the web methods run asynchronously on the server.

How can I trigger a jQuery function with the Gridview Select button? I want that the select button trigger the jquery function that has the row details (it's already working with a asp:buttonfield ), and select the row so i can get the values and send it trough e-mail with another button. I don't know if this is possible. or, Can I trigger the jQuery function from code behind with the select button Sub? How?
[Code]....
This function capture the gridview cell values that are hidden and show them in a div outside the gridview (it works as row details). I have no problem with this.
[Code]....
All i need is a button that select the row index and/or values and trigger the jquery function . Or I can execute the jQuery function from server side. I don't know if it's posible.

I am looking through a sql stored procedure which I might need to update in the near future. Basically the stored procedure is about 20 lines long. The stored procedure first builds a query
and stores it in a variable named "@Sql". And then for the last two lines of the stored procedure it appears that the big sql statement stored in "@Sql" is executed by using the "EXEC" command. See below. What is confusing though is that the query appears to be exectuted twice? Why was the query written in this way. Don't both lines do the same thing? Why is it being done twice? Could this possibly be a mistake on the
part of the person who wrote the query. Below are the two lines I am talking about?
EXEC sp_executesql @sql
EXEC (@sql)

Before I go the route of using hidden fields or something similar, is there any way to send back to the server changes to the disabled state of an ASP.net Button control? I have a Button that is initially enabled and I disable it via jQuery on the client. Works great. The only problem is when I do a PostBack the server still thinks the Button is enabled and sends back a response that changes it back to enabled. Why doesn't the ViewState send back the current disabled status of the Button? Is there a way to force it to postback the changes? Other ASP.net controls, like the CheckBox, do send back the state changes to the server. Seems odd to me.

I need to run the HttpContext.Current.Server.Execute method in my ASP.NET application. This application has a WCF operation that does some processing. Currently, I am to do my processing correctly from within my WCF operation. However, I would like to do this asynchronously.
In an error to attempt this asynchronously, I tried running Server.Execute in the DoWork event handler of a BackgroundWorker. Unfortunately, this throws an error that says
"object reference not set to an instance of an object" The HttpContext element is not null. I checked that. It is some property nested in the HttpContext object that appears to be null. However, I have not been able to identify why this won't work. It happens as soon as I move the processing to the BackgroundWorker thread.
My question is, how can I asynchronously execute the Server.Execute method?

I'm going nuts here.. This is what i like to do: When i click my serverbutton i want a fade message to show and then execute as usual all the servercode (db insert and more) i have in my button_click event in code behind. The fade effect works, but the servercode never executes. I don't know how many guides i have tried but it seems impossible to achieve this. I just want to fire the the code in my click_event. I really hope someone of you can point me in the right direction.
This is my fade code:

I have a page with some custom validation which displays a result in a validation summary. I would like to reposition this validation summary to the bottum of the page without causing the page to scroll with the length of the validation summary. I have a jQuery function which does this very nicely, however, I need to execute this jQuery after the validation summary is displayed and i'm not sure which event to trigger.
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#<%= vsmSummary.ClientID %>").change(function(){
var newTop = $(window).height() - $("#vsmSummary").height();
var newLeft = ($(window).width() - $("#vsmSummary").width()) / 2;
$("#vsmSummary").css(
{
'position': 'absolute',
'left': newLeft,
'top': newTop
}
);
});
});
In my custom validation method I build this string and register with the RadScriptManager...
Dim scriptText As String = "$(document).ready(function(){ " + _
"$(""#<%= vsmSummary.ClientID %>"").ready(function(){" + _
"var newTop = $(window).height() - $(""#vsmSummary"").height();" + _
"var newLeft = ($(window).width() - $(""#vsmSummary"").width()) / 2;" + _
"$(""#vsmSummary"").css(" + _
"{" + _
"'position': 'absolute'," + _
"'left': newLeft," + _
"'top': newTop" + _
"}" + _
");" + _
"});" + _
"});"
RadScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Me.upSCPPage, Me.upSCPPage.GetType(), "DynamicVSM", scriptText, True) This works!! I had no clue that I could call this from my code behind!! I will be doing this much more in the future!

I am retrieving the HTML source code from a remote URL via C#. I am storing the html in a string. I would like to parse through it, but do not want to use RegEx. Instead of want to leverage the jQuery engine to parse through it. Is this possible somehow?
This is how I getting the html from the remote url:
HttpWebRequest wr = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url);
string html = (new StreamReader(wr.GetResponse().GetResponseStream())).ReadToEnd();
I found the Fizzler library [URL], but it does not use the jQuery engine so there is a lot of things missing from it. Any suggestions on how to do this properly?

I am at my wits end. I am developing an MVC application using the VS2010 templates and have added jquery and jqgrid functionality to my pages.
Everything works perfectly when running my app in debug mode using the Visual Studio Development web server. At runtime, the app comes up in the browser with a URL such as :
http://localhost:49572/
However, this app has functions that must run under HTTPS and accept client certificates so I've reconfigured the project to use IIS, configured the virtual directory, loaded a self-signed certificate, etc etc.
The app launches just fine with a URL that looks like this (depending on whether it is configured to launch with https or not).
http://machinename/virtualdirectory or https://machinename/virtualdirectory
but now my javascript and CSS references don't work. I've played around with every variation of ../file, ../Scripts/file.js, ../../Scripts/file.js, ../../Content/file.css. I've tried all the various helpers like ResolveClientUrl and Content.Url, leading ~, etc etc etc.
With some variations, certain jquery functions will work, like an Autocomplete text box or datepicker, but the jqgrid won't. If I leave everything at ../../Scripts/file.js, then all my jquery breaks running from IIS.
My CSS and link references look like this.
<link href="../../Content/Site.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="../../Content/themes/smoothness/jquery-ui-1.8.9.custom.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="../../Content/themes/ui.jqgrid.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="../../Scripts/jquery-1.4.4.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../../Scripts/jquery-ui.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../../Scripts/grid.locale-en.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="../../Scripts/jquery.jqGrid.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

I'm getting "Cannot connect to ASP.NET development server" almost every time I stop the ASP.NET server before restarting the project in debug mode. It can take between 15 seconds and 2 minutes to get the error message, and Visual Studio is frozen.
Sometimes I get three in a row, and I have to wait 2 minutes each time, or go into Task Manager and kill to process. Then I have to start Visual Studio 2010 again, which is at least three times slower than Visual Studio 2008 to open.
It's *extremely* annoying. I know I don't have to close the server if the code has changed, but sometimes I simply want to restart my website in debug mode (there is a cache on most web service calls, so this clears the cache). A workaround is to add "foo" code to a class and restart the project.
I'm running Visual Studio 2010 Professional on Windows Server 2008. I'm running the Visual Studio Power Tools too, with the latest update.

I have created my site using ASP.NET Personal Starter Kits 3.5. I use Visual Studio 2008 only . .with its built-in SQL Server (2005 Express) ... my database in App_Data is ASPNETDB.MDF ...
I have created some of my tables also ....in ASPNETDB ..
In my local PC the site was running fine ...
But when I publish my site on production server it doesn't work and shows the following error
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=69.16.253.19;Initial Catalog=usa_data;Persist Security Info=True;User Id=user;Password=pass" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
My hosting provider gave me the connection string to connect to the SQL Server 2005 but it doesn't work...
I don't understand why my site was running fine using the production SQL Server 2005 in my local PC when I include ASPNETDB.MDF file in App_Data in my local pc only ..if I remove file ASPNETDB.MDF from App_Data of my local pc ... the site stops working ...
Can anybody tell em how to fix this ... !! I am very tensed since last 3-4 days

I want to copy a database on a development server to my local server. I am not the server administrator but I have rights to the database. Soon after the wizard Executes the SQL Server Agent Job it fails and the error message says:

Where do I find this log? Also what could be the problem?

Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

I am wondering the best way to change my connection string based upon which server I am accessing.
Essentially, all of the development is done on our local machines - once we think it is working, we upload it to our development server. In these 2 instances, I want my application to go off of our "dev" connection string for the SQL database in the web.config.
However, once it is published to our production server (for an internal application), I would like the connection string to point to our live db.
I am using the N-Tier model by Imar Spaanjaars - and have it setup like he suggests - In my DAL I have a class called AppConfiguration -
In this class I have a public readonly property ConnectionString() which returns the connection string in the web.config.
This is in an individual class library. What I would like to do is something similar to:
If server is localhost OR devstring return devString else return productionstring

We have a largely asp.net web form team (With some Oracle developers thrown in).
Question 1:
Is it a good idea to start using asp.net MVC which will mean redevelopment of a number of standard controls for not much benefit.
Question 2:
Is it a good idea to hire developers where there most recent skills are with asp.net MVC?
I doubt there is any benefit adopting MVC now, given the 100+ applications in this suite of products, and the maintenance/rework this will cause. Given this, is there any particular reason to hire MVC developers, as they won't be hitting the ground running, which is what I need now.
