State Management :: Form Timeout Vs. Session Timeout Vs. Connectionstrings Timeout?

Jan 27, 2011

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.

We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):

1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout

2. how do I set session timeout

Security :: User Is Logged Off After Session Timeout

Jul 2, 2010

My 3.5 app uses Forms Authentication. I create an authentication cookie (ticket) with an expiration date of one day. The cookie's IsPersistent is set to True. I do not use any session variables. Session timeout is the default 20 minutes.

Here's the problem:

When the session times out in 20 minutes, the user is redirected to the logon page even though the authentication cookie has not expired.

Why does this happen? I thought the session and the cookie were independent of each other.

How To Create A Website That Has A Custom Authentication/session Timeout For Each User

Apr 4, 2011

I am trying to build an ASP.NET site that allows each user to set their own session timeout value. Basically from the user's perspective if they set their timeout value to 30 then that means that after 30 minutes of inactivity they are required to re-authenticate. If they set their timeout value to 0 then that means that they can leave the browser open as long as they want and their session never expires - they never have to re-authenticate. This is different than "remember me" functionality. If they close their browser they will have to re-authenticate.

Currently I am using Forms Authentication in my application and I have one object that I am storing in ASP.NET session. This object is a custom User object that has a number of different pieces of information about the current user.

What code would I need to write so that after successful login, the system has the proper authentication ticket and the proper session expiration value? I keep thinking I have this working and then I notice weird time outs where the system seems to think I am authenticated but my session has expired.

Currently on my login page I am using an ASP.NET login control. i have custom code in the Login_Authenticate event to authorize the user. Then I have the following code in the Login_LoggedIn event to set the auth ticket.

[code]....

Timeout During Left Join Using LINQ To Entities?

Mar 2, 2011

I have the following LINQ query that does a left join:

var results = from v in ctx.dat_Visitor
join sp in ctx.vwSP on v.lu_Mentor.ID equals sp.ID into sp2
select new {

[code]...

My problem is that this LINQ query times out on me. I even upped the default timeout from 15 seconds to 120 seconds and it still times out. dat_Visitor has no more than 10 records in it, but vwSP (which is a view) has somewhere around 100,000 records. I know for sure that the timeout has to do with when I attempt to actually return sp2 in the results. If I change my LINQ query to not return sp2 in the results, then it is quick. Without sp2 the query looks like such:

var results = from v in ctx.dat_Visitor
join sp in ctx.vwSP on v.lu_Mentor.ID equals sp.ID into sp2
select new {
Visitor = v.Name,
Tot = sp2.Count()
};

Lastly, I'm using the 3.5 framework, but I am having serious thoughts about upgrading the website to 4.0, since I could then use DefaultIfEmpty().

Differences In Forms Auth Timeout And Session Timeout?

Feb 1, 2010

The session state timeout is set using this web.config element

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="120" />
The forms auth is configured using this web.config element
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="30"
name=".ASPXAUTH"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
defaultUrl="default.aspx"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile"
enableCrossAppRedirects="false" />
</authentication>
</system.web>

What is the difference between the timeouts specified in each of these elements? If both are different, how would it work?

I have ASP.NET session set to Xmin. I want when X+1 min expires, I have expiration page. what I did was to set the JS timer to validate every x+1min to see if the session expired (the problem is that the JS and the ASP session timeouts are not synced)

Security :: Valid Session Isn't Created On Re-logging In After Session Timeout

Feb 3, 2011

I created a user control for my web application that checks for Session Timeout. If the criteria are met for Timeout, I use Response.Redirect to send the user back to the login page. I include this user control in my Master page, and run the SessionTimeoutcode in the user control's Page_Init event. That all works great. However, once the user logs in again after time-out (and I have verified that the OnLoggedIn event does fire) the user is redirected to the DestinationPageUrl. That page runs the Session Timeout check when it loads (as it should) and the Session Timeout code "says" that the session is still timed-out.

ASP.NET: Session Does Not End, Session Timeout Checks Are In The Home/Customer Action?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm working to set up/correct my session timeout code, and have consulted numerous articles like this one and this SO post for ideas on how best to do this. The solution to detecting a session timeout that I continue to see over and over is to first check the Session.IsNewSession property for true, and if so, then check to see if a session cookie already exists. I guess the logic here is that the user has ended their last session that timed out, started a new session, but the old cookie wasn't yet removed. The code for those checks looks like this:

[CODE]...

The problem is that the session does not end, and all of my session timeout checks are in the Home/Customer action (I use MVC). So I'm redirected to Home/Customer, and I run through the checks above, but when I get to Session.IsNewSession, it's false, because the session is still alive (I assume because I'm still within the 120 minutes I have set)

How To Set Session Timeout

In ASP.NET application's web.config, I have something like this

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="30"/>

Is this the only place where Sessions timeouts are defined Is this timeoout in web.config the only one for all the sessions in the application. Can I not set the session timeouts for each session individually.
IF so, where??

ASP.NET 2.0 Session Timeout

Jul 16, 2010

I have an asp.net 2.0 application which times out after say 15-20 minutes if user didnt do any activity and presses a button on the page(he is redirected to sessionExpired.aspx page). I have set the session timeout to 60 minutes in my web.config file but still somehow the user is timed out.

I have another question related to this regarding the Session Timeout Precedence. Does IIS session timeout take priority over ASP.NET session timeout. Say if IIS session timeout is set to 20 minutes and ASP.NET session timeout is 60 minutes, does ASP.NET override IIS session timeout.

Validation Check Which Prompt As Soon As User Leave The Control?

Jun 18, 2010

We are developing an application where we have a Form to fill by users. Here is the scenario for some fields:Name : Does not contain numbers like 123 but it can be alpha-numeric like mynangal123 but does not contain special charactersOB : Does contain specific formats like mm.dd.yyyy or dd/mm/yyy or yyyy/mm/dd etc. doesn't contain alphabetsTAXID : Can be Numeric but not numbers like it can be "123" but not 123 also it can be T-125Now, as per requirement we have to validate or prompt the user for specific input if he/she did not enter the specific entry. Like if in name User enter 123456 then there should be a messagebox to warn "please enter a valid name"Restrictions : We have a option of Javascript but its not recommendable in most of scenario so, we need to create a custom validators or something else which will solve our problem.

Security :: Get The System To Actually Prompt The User To Login With Credentials?

Feb 5, 2010

I am the web developer at a medical clinic. I have 2 scenarios going on:

First, I have a physicians only component of our employee portal to allow access to only physician shareholders or physician non-shareholders. My structure is built like:

Physicians Only
Administration
Affiliations
Calendars
Compensation
Minutes

The Affiliations folder is only going to be accessible by the physician shareholders. Therefore, I have security roles set for Physicians Only and Affiliations. When I test, the security is set correctly on the folders. However, when I try to login as different people, all with different roles, I have to login with user name and password, twice, before the system allows me in.

Secondly, I have secured areas within the employee portal also. However, when I navigate to them, the system doens't usually prompts me to login. If it does prompt me to login, it too, is on the second try. So how does it know who I am? And more importantly, how do I get the system to actually prompt the user to login with their credentials?
