I have a detailsview in insert mode. I want to prompt the user to enter data in all fields, if left empty. Could someone please find a few minutes to show me how to do it?
View 2 RepliesIn my detailsview, I have an emptydatatemplate set up to allow users to enter new records. The code works. However, once the record is inserted, the detailsview defaults to a standard insert screen. I know this will cause confusion for the users. I would prefer the detailsview to either show in edit mode or a read-only mode. I have used detailsview.changemode and detailsview.currentmode in the custom sub created for the add new button of the emptydatatemplate- neither of which do what I was hoping. It would be even better if when there was no data, it defaulted to the insert screen (which seems like that should be an easy, no-brainer way for .net to function) but it doesn't. Or, I don't know how to accomplish it.
I don't want to force the user to click cancel after inserting an item through the emptydatatemplate just to be able to use the detailsview for other records.

View 2 RepliesI have a listview control bound to an SqlDataSource. As part of the formatting I want to add a title to the data returned from my database. For instance if the data base returns a phone number I want to add 'Tel.' first. However I do not want to diplay this
title if the datafield is empty. Here is what I have done so far.

I have a problem with DetailsView linked with Database, DetailsView is Insert/Edit enabled, and adding/ediditng data works, however........ when I add a new record (DetailsView in Insert mode) and press INSET instead going to record I have just created in Read-Only Mode it shows me blank form, it looks that the "linking" field is null.

View 5 RepliesI would like to find controls in the detailsview control placed in the EmptyData Template of the gridview. I am trying to create Insert new record for the gridview control.
1. If there are existing records in the table - works fine and sets my two values: I placed Detailsview and Insert Button in the footer of the gridview. I needed to set the values of two fields. When I click on the Insert button it saves new record and sets the field with the value (code attached - works fine). I also have a popup extender that opens detailsview - this works just fine.
2, If ther are not records in the table - saves record but cannot find and set controls on the detailsview Same thing setup in the EmptyData Template. The record is saved but I cannot Find and set the field value on the control.

I have City,State and zipcode fields in Database. I want all 3 columns to display in one row in details View.
How to Concatenate these 3 fields in DetailsView.
I have a FormView with a byte field. The field is not required and if I don't enter a value, I get an error that the value is not acceptable in a byte field. I can replace the null value with 0 but I would prefer not to.
What is the best way to handle this so that if I do not enter a value in a byte (or int16) field to insert a null value (or whatever they do in the ASP.net).
I have a detailsview with three textboxes as itemtemplates. Each for holding a different date. To avoid the option of users entering invalid values the textboxes are disabled and the user can use a calender control to fill the dates. Because the textboxes are disabled I added a linkbutton to empty a date, if the user decides to clear it.

Now, the problem is that no matter which linkbutton a user clicks all three textboxes are cleared/emptied. Why?
I have a details view on my page that has a template field in it. In the template field is a button that when clicked, sets the visible property of another field to true. When this happens the whole detailsview resets and anything that was entered into other fiields is cleared. Is there any way to prevent the other fields from being cleared when the hidden field is set to be shown.
View 1 RepliesIn this case I'm having, the ItemTemplate for various fields in my DetailsView (2 in my case) does not show up, but when you click the edit button, the EditItemTemplate shows up. I played with it, moving it around. No matter where I put it, one of the fields did not show up.
To get even stranger (and don't ask me how I came up with this), if I put a dummy boundfield BEFORE it, the ItemTemplate shows up. But this is totally absurd.

View 1 RepliesI have a Formview control that has several lookup fields. The value is an int ID but the textfield is the name, e.g. value = StateID, displayed text = StateCode)
If the user leaves that field blank, I get a Server Error when attempting to Update: Failed to set one or more properties on type orgOrganization. is not a valid value for Int32.
In the table for the LinqDataSource which provides the data for the Formview, all fields except the text field OrganizationName allow Nulls.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? I tried a test which just has the numbers, no lookups, and get the same result.

I would like on the load of my DetailsView to get the values of the labels contained in my DetailsView to set my class's attributes.
But my .cs can't recognize the IDs of my DetailsView's Labels...
I have a working gridView/DetailsView used as a member Lookup.
Some Fields in the Details View have data only some of the time, and when there isn't any, I want to suppress that row of the detail. No Go.
It seems that some of the function available in other controls don't exist so I cannot make the "field and its "header" Visible = "False"

I'm trying to use the DetailsView to make Updates. The problem is that it can't handle empty fields even though the underlying table field allows nulls.
I get a message like this if I change the "State" field to blank when doing an update

Im not sure what i could have done wrong here but i created a dataset (ran a query and it returns the correct data) - created my BLL class - bound the ObjectDataSource to the control using the BLL - ran the site and all the data is showing as expected. Now i click edit columns (from DetailsView smart tag) and the selected fields are empty. I refresh the schema and this makes no difference. What could i be doing wrong?

View 5 RepliesI'm not sure if you would consider it a foreign key field or not, but I have an agency table with an association to my Project table. It exists primarily to limit the input values of agency in the Project table to those listed in the Agency table. Anyway, everything works fine, except that when you insert/add a project, the Agency field is moved to the end of the list. I'd like to move it back where it belongs (further up the list).
View 3 RepliesI have a problem that in DetailsView Edit Mode, if I go to edit fields, and set a fields visible property to false, when I update the record through the built in update options it sends a null value. If I change the field back to visible, it passes the data just fine.
Consequently, I tried just setting the field to Read Only = True, and got the same result even though the current values do show up in the edit mode, just read only.Is there anyway to hide the field but still allow it to pass the data it currently has "BACK" into the record.
I have a detailsview on my page binding a table with information about the employees. They can update their information. Some info should be visible but not updateable. I could change the update command not updating but I like the control where I can set the column to read only. In that way the employee will find the data visible and they will see that the field/column cannot be changed. But having the column read only will return a null-value into that column when editing and updating anything. Why is that? Shouldn't it just update it's read only value?
