I use declarative roles in my MVC.NET controllers and I have a custom membership & roles provider.This works fine:
[Authorize(Roles = "ADMIN")]
Also, I have a base MVC.NET CustomController class that all controllers derive from, and it has a "currentUser" property that is auto-fetched from the session on demand, so all controller code just refers to "currentUser" and doesn't worry about sessions, httpcontext, etc. I've implemented the membership provider properly, as it works with other parts of the framework that just deals with providers, but until now I had not tried to access the "User" principal from a view.What is the simplest syntax for check roles in a view page? I know I can use a helper to generate a partial view but I don't want that here, I want to explicitly wrap some sections of a page in some role checks.Something like this:
<% if(currentUser.IsInRole("ADMIN") { %>
...
<% } %>
I have a website where users can login and they have different roles/privileges. I want to have it where the user's view of the webpage is determined by their role. Right now I am storing the role in the UserData property of the FormsAuthenticationTicket class (which is retrieved from a database during login). When the main page is loading, I want it to check the user's role and then only show the controls/portions of the page that are for that role. For example, if the user is not an administrator, they shouldn't be able to click on a button to delete a record. At the moment I am using labels to hide or show areas depending on the user's role. Something like this:
[Code]....
[Code]....
And here is a portion of the markup code with the Labels:
[Code]....
This works, but doesn't seem to be a very good way to handle this type of thing. Is there a cleaner, more elegant way of doing this? Something similar to the LoginView control, but which I can use for roles?
I'm trying to stop the rest of a page loading based on some parameters; but am not sure of the correct syntax.
@if(dayRes + dayTri == 2){<text>Sorry, etc</text> @Response.End}
The above throws this error: CS1502: The best overloaded method match for 'System.Web.WebPages.WebPageExecutingBase.Write(System.Web.WebPages.HelperResult)' has some invalid arguments
I'm currently working on a Web Site application project that requires a treeview to be heirarchically structured based on the attribute ids of each node rather than the format of the XML.
[Code]....
At present the above is lining up all names under each other, I would like the hierarchy to be based on the attribute parentid and Id. For example: Jane Smith should be a child of Joe smith and Bob Turner is a Child of Jane Smith.
I have looked all over for elegant solutions to this not so age-old question. How can I lock down form elements within an ASP.Net MVC View, without adding if...then logic all over the place? Ideally the BaseController, either from OnAuthorization, or OnResultExecultion, would check the rendering form elements and hide/not render them based on role and scope. Another approach I have considered is writing some sort of custom attributes, so as to stay consistent with how how we lock down ActionResults with [Authorize]. Is this even possible without passing a list of hidden objects to the view and putting if's all over? Other background info: We will have a database that will tell us at execution time (based on user role/scope) what elements will be hidden. We are using MVC3 with Razor Viewengine. We're utilizing a BaseController where any of the Controller methods can be overridden.
View 1 RepliesI have added a jquery datepicker on my MVC view. This view has a partial view. I need to filter my partial view based on the datepicker's selected date. I need to show buttons on partial view based on the date.
I have added partial view like this:
div id="dvGames" class="cornerdate1"> % Html.RenderPartial("Partial3"); %>
/div>
I have built an intranet site where the user is automatically logged in through Windows Authentication and I am now building an admin panel/section. I was wondering if there is a way using the Active Directory memberOf attribute that people who are members of the group 'Domain Administrators' could automatically gain access to this section without needing to log in, but people who are not part of this group get redirected.
View 1 RepliesI have a view that displays all the records of my Roles table. I want to be able to click a Role record and have a list of users that pertain to that role displayed to the right of the Roles list. I'm sure I need to use a view model for this so I can get two sets of models in one view, but I'm not sure how to set up the view model.
Controller code:
[Code]....
Repository (userRep) code:
[Code]....
I can just as easily get the full user list with return db.Users;
So what method needs added to my repository and how should my view model look?
I am using Moq for unit testing and I would like to test for a view's attribute.In this case the Authorize attribute.Example View Code:
[Authorize(Roles = "UserAdmin")]
public virtual ActionResult AddUser()

I can have a base class for views in an MVC project like this:
public class BaseViewPage : System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage
{
public string Something { get; set; }
}
And then in the ASPX I can do this:
<%@ Page Something="foo" Language="C#" Inherits="MyNamespace.BaseViewPage" %>
This works fine; the problem is when I try to do the same with the generic version:
public class BaseViewPage<TModel> : System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<TModel> where TModel : class
{
public string Something { get; set; }
}
When I try to use this from the ASPX, like this:
<%@ Page Something="foo" Language="C#" Inherits="MyNamespace.BaseViewPage<SomeClass>" %>
I get the error message:
Error parsing attribute 'something': Type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage' does not have a public property named 'something'.
Notice how it tries to use System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage rather than my BaseViewPage class. To make it more interesting, if I remove the "Something" attribute from the Page directive and put some code in the generic version of BaseViewPage (OnInit for example) the class is actually called / used / instantiated.
So, am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation.
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server">
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" onchange="calculate()" runat="server" Text="0"></asp:TextBox>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
I'm getting this error on the above markup: Message 1 Validation (ASP.Net): Attribute 'onchange' is not a valid attribute of element 'TextBox'.
I have a problem with my web site 1stSigBdeAssn.org. I have made no changes to the site but I now get the following error message:
Parser Error Message:
Unrecognized attribute 'targetFramework'. Note that attribute names are case-sensitive.
Source Error:

I created a simple Master Page in Visual Studio 2008:
<%@
Master
Language="VB"
CodeFile="MasterPage.master.vb"
Inherits="MasterPage" %>
<!DOCTYPE
html
PUBLIC
"-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
and got green underlined 'Master' with two warning messages: 1.Validation (ASP.NET): This attribute name must be followed byan equal (=) sign and a value. If the value is in quotation marks, the quotation marks must match. 2. Validation (ASP.NET): Attribute 'Master' is not a valid attribute of element 'Control'.How I can get rid of the messages?
I've read somewhere that events of ASP .NET are based on View State of ASPX page. The values of submitted controls are matched with their value of view state and if any difference is found then the corresponding event is called up.
"When events are really based on view state than why events are fired even when the view state is disabled using EnableViewState=false."
As ASP.NET MVC has a pluggable view engine architecture, and XAML is an object descriptive mark-up that, given the right processor/ parser, can generate an appropriate UI...are there plans/ efforts to create a view engine that can turn XAML into HTML?
Personally, I think this would help to re-enforce the efforts the WPF/ Silverlight people have gone to in providing a means of seperating the view from the model/ business logic between designers and developers (via Visual Studio and Expression Blend)...
Seems like a logical step to me, but not knowing XAML as well as I should, I'm wondering if feasable, or even relevant.
I have developed an ASP.NET MVC 2 application on Framework 4. I have an 'Administration' link on the home page. My query is, what is the best approach of displaying the 'Administration' link only to the users in the role administrator and hiding it from others keeping in mind the Seperation of Concern bit.
View 2 RepliesI'm building an ASP.NET MVC 2 site where I'm using the OutputCache parameter heavily. However, I have a concern: using such caching may interfere with authentication.On all of my pages, I display whether the user is logged in or not. Furthermore, in some of my Views, I do filtering based on user role to determine whether or not to display some page content (for example, the Edit link on one of my pages is only shown to users in the roles of Moderator or Administrator)
View 2 Repliesit is possible to customize the typed view generation process to generate the proper controls based on the fields annotations of a model. For Example I have a Person Model that contains Foreign Keys like CityID,DepartmentID etc. So When i generate a view againt the Person Model it creates textbox's for all the Person fields but i want dropdownlists against FK fields. It Should be smart enough to at least geereate the peroper controls based on the Person's field annotations. How can i acheive that? Has anybody worked on that?
View 2 RepliesIs there a way to dynamically build an action link in a Master Page depeding on the View iteself.
For example, if I am at View1, I want the link in the Master PAge to point to an action A; whereas if I am on View 2, I want the link in the Master Page to point to an action B.
i have this code in html but i dont know why i cant take the correct value
the "xcity" take only the last value ??
[code]....
What's the best technique to hide part of a view depending of the credentials of the user?
To explain my self little better and as example i have the following code in my view:
<%= this.Model.Name %> <%=Html.ActionLink("Edit",....)%>
And i would like to hide the edit button for those that aren't administrators for instance...
Could you give me a hand?
I have two strongly Typed partial views (Developers list and Testers list) and the respective views are Developers.ascx and Testers.ascx Now I want to load one partial view based on the radiobutton selected.
How to read the value of the radiobutton option? if anyone can provide Code snippet or some guidelines.
Here is my parent Controller Code & View:
Parent Controller:
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult View IT People List(string type)
{
var developers = from d in itEntity.Developers select s; return View(developers);
}
Parent View:
<%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Mvc.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<IEnumerable<DataModel.Developers>>" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="cphHead" runat="server">
</asp:Content>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="cphContent" runat="server">
<h2>View All IT Dept List</h2>
<table>
<tr>
<td><label for="txType">Select List:</label> </td>
<td>
<%= Html.RadioButton("Type", 1, true)%> Developers <%= Html.RadioButton("Type", 2, false)%> Testers
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td colspan = 2>
<%Html.RenderPartial("Developers", Model);%>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</asp:Content>
Two strongly Typed Controllers are:
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult Developers()
{
var developers = from d in itEntity.Developers select d; return View(developers);
}
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult Testers()
{
var testers = from t in itEntity.Testers select t; return View(testers);
}
I have a tree view which uses my SQL database and tables to generate the tree view and list of reports under the different categories and folders. That all works perfectly... However, since some of the reports are private, and some of the reportsare pubic I was hoping to be able to adjust the image of the report to a different icon to differentiate between the two. Here is my code which generates the tree view and lists the reports below it:(All code is in VB.NET)
[Code]....
I've thought about this but havn't tried to many options, figured I would see if anything stood out as easy as node.setimageurl = "~/images/image.png" etc.
I want to know that how to render partial view based on where the user navigates. I mean to say if user navigates to Home/index it will load different partial view and if user navigates to Home/contact it will load different partial view on the _layout page.
