I would like to create both ASP.Net MVC and WPF/Silverlight clients for the same project (in other words, against the same DataModel), should I create a common ViewModel project or a separate ViewModel for each client technology?
I would like to believe a common ViewModel is the right thing to do, but the need to create Dependent Properties or JSON strings make it seem to be incompatible.
Maybe another solution is to put the common part of the ViewModel into the DataModel layer?
Web Forms :: Web Parts - Best Suited For Project Or Not?
Jan 7, 2010I'm starting a web project where I would like to have the minimize/collapse functionality of the Web Parts. In a future version I would like to let the user move the modules around and add and remove modules to/from the page, but not right now. The users don't have to be authenticated to use the portal and if they are, I can't use the built in authorize functions. My questions are: should I use Web Parts, or should I just use Web User Controls? Is there other libraries, similar to Web Parts, that are better suited for my use?

VS 2010 Trying To Incorporate Silverlight Into Project
Sep 7, 2010I have been working with ASP.net for a while now and was very familiar with how the page lifecycle worked. I am now trying to incorporate Silverlight into my ASP.net project and I am a little confused on how it works with the ASP page lifecycle.
For example, with Silverlight, I understand you need to access the server using the web service. I am able to populate a Silverlight datagrid by calling a stored proc through the web service in the loaded event. My problem is the DataGrid does not populate until ALL the code in the loaded event has executed. As you can see below, I want to do a simple calculation after I populate the DataGrid. I need to populate the DataGrid first and then do the calculation, but the calculation is done before the grid populates.
What I need to happen:
When I call 'tpService.getStepsAsync()', I need it to go to the web service to grab the data and then populate the DataGrid. Then I need 'a = 2 + 2' to execute. How can I get this to occur?

Debugging Silverlight When Hosted In A Web Project?
Jul 8, 2010I have two projects: A web application project, that has a webpage that hosts a Silverlight application, as well as a web service A Silverlight application project, the one hosted in the above web application
If I debug the Silverlight application, it wants to run this with a generated web page, which will of course not start my web application, and web service calls fails due to some cross-site security model. So even if I have the web application running, the Silverlight application won't use it.
If I debug the Web application (that is, set it as a start project and hit Debug), then the Silverlight application is apparently correctly hosted, but I can't debug it. Any breakpoints in it shows up as those hollow circles.
So what am I doing wrong? How should I configure my projects so that I can start the web application, host my Silverlight application, and debug it?
I'm betting it is one of those "dough" moments when someone tells me, but I can't figure it out.
This is Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.

May 5, 2010I work in a suite of ASP.NET applications that have several different "modules". The applications all share a main menu, so they all link to one-another. The modules are the high-level areas of the application. So, for example, it might be Payments, Orders, Customers, Products, etc. And Payments and Orders are in one app and Products and Customers are in another. Some of these menu links are "deep links", for example it might be a link to a particular page within the Customers module, such as Create New Customer.
We are about to start a project that will add several more modules to this suite, probably as a new .NET application. I'm thinking about doing these new modules in Silverlight (for various reasons that are not material to the question). If I were to do that, I need to make the menu look the same as the menu in ASP.NET, as the users still need to feel like they are inside one "application".
How should I organize the Silverlight project(s) so that I can "deep link" from ASP.NET pages into particular modules in the Silverlight app? What is even the best idea for creating these different Silverlight "modules"? If I had something that would've been a page in ASP.NET (for example - Create Customer), should each one of those be a separate Silverlight app? Or should it be a separate User Control? Or something else? Should I reuse our shared ASP.NET menu, and deep link to different Silverlight "modules" even within the new application? Or should I reimplement the menu in Silverlight for navigation within the app? Are there menu controls for Silverlight that look similar to ASP.NET menus (with flyout submenus in this case)? Could I maybe even share a SiteMap XML file between them?
Visual Studio :: Error After Adding Silverlight To MVC2 Project With LINQ?
Jul 25, 2010I have an MVC 2 web application which uses models auto-generated by LINQ. When I add a Silverlight project to my solution, generating a new strongly-typed View fails with the message:
Compiling transformation: The type or namespace name 'Data' does not exist in the namespace 'System' (are you missing an assembly reference?). I understand this is most likely because Silverlight does not access the System.Data namespace (at least, I can't add the reference to my Silverlight app). However, it's not really important - I'm just trying to generate an .aspx View at this stage, not a Silverlight View.
Is there any way to get this template generation to work, or do I have to create my Silverlight project outside the solution and build it separately? I was kind of hoping to take advtage of WCF RIA and some of the other goodies one gets from including the Silverlight app within the main solution... anybody got a fix?

Jul 29, 2010I have a Silverlight site hosted in an asp page, it has been developed using vs2010 using .net 3.5 framework and silverlight 4. It all works on my dev box. However when I publish the site and get it deployed I get the error:
Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Moe.Tactical.Ttas.Web' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded.
I have checked that the ISS asp setting are using 2.0.50727, and that all my references are using that runtime also.
I am not sure what to do to work out what the missing dependencies are at this point (I don't have access to the deployment box, I will have to go and sit with a system admin).

how, i use ajax, and wrapping the entire area where all these parts need to be updated is counter intuitive as the ajax data being sent back would be close to the entire page.
so, i have a few partial views, - but the problem is, each action only returns one view! how can i return multiple views from this one action?
i know a popular solution is to just hammer the server with multiple async javascript ajax requests for each "part" of the view, but this really is unnecessary and inefficient, reconstructing and destroying the page (say) 5 times for just one action, when it should just occur once, and once it does, the server should manage all the partial views then and there.

Mar 26, 2010I am working on a VWD Walkthrough: Creating a Web Parts Page in VWD, [URL]Here I created a user control, DisplayModeMenu.ascx. Somehow, when running this webpage, the DropDownList of this user control showed only a Browse selection, no Edit selection. Clicking the "Reset User State" link showed the following error message.
The Walkthrough did not list any information on setting up the "ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool" or additional tags on Web.config. How can I fix the errors?
BTW, is it true that User Control is not recommended for VS 2005/8 any more.
Personalization is not enabled and/or modifiable. The Enabled property must be set to true, and a registered personalization provider must be selected. The current user must be granted the right to modify personalization state.

Also, I added the controls tblrowErrMsg and lblErrMsg as server controls to the Master Page.
Why I am doing this ?
This will allow me to display error messages from nearly any where inside the code in code-behined, app_code, and other core Class Projects (DLL).
Combine JQuery Client And Server Side Errors In Same Summary At Top Of Page
Feb 25, 2010I am using JQuery for all of my client side validation and Asp.net validator controls for all of my server side validation. I am using an errorlabelcontainer to store the client side validations in a summary at the top of the page, which is the requirement. All works well. My problem is, I want to display the server side asp.net errors in the same errorlabelcontainer OR display all of the client side errors in the validation summary. Either way, Both errors need to be in the same place/div. Any ideas on how to do this? I thought of maybe using the asp.net validation summary as the errorcontainer in JQuery, but I cannot find the summary. This is what I have right now.

Web Forms :: Enabling Client Caching Of Part Of A Page That Is Changing Often In Some Parts But Not Others?
May 24, 2010Let's say you had a page like an eBay auction, where some of the content (top bidder, bids, history, etc) needed to be up to date but other sections would likely never change, like the description. I'd like to know the "right" method for getting that static section cached.
The "cheezy" solution would be to code it up in a separate javascript .js file as a bunch of "document.writeln()" calls, but that's plain evil and ugly.
If I made it a Content section of a master page, that might get it cached at the server, but the client has no way to know that this particular section of the page will never change.
I could IFRAME it but I don't always know the dimensions.
I'm sure this has all been done before, and as much as I love my own wheels, I'd rather not reinvent this one :-)
