there is already an asp.net web site developed,now due to certain requirements i want to use silverlight enabled pages in my project(for its flexible designing purpose).

onething is not clear to me that in asp.net 1.1 there was asp.net project type but from 2.0 there is no asp.net project type option rather
there is option called website. in website type project no solution is created and no link is created with IIS.
why microsoft design in this way from 2.0. i think there must be soldin reason & advantage behind it.
I work in a suite of ASP.NET applications that have several different "modules". The applications all share a main menu, so they all link to one-another. The modules are the high-level areas of the application. So, for example, it might be Payments, Orders, Customers, Products, etc. And Payments and Orders are in one app and Products and Customers are in another. Some of these menu links are "deep links", for example it might be a link to a particular page within the Customers module, such as Create New Customer.
We are about to start a project that will add several more modules to this suite, probably as a new .NET application. I'm thinking about doing these new modules in Silverlight (for various reasons that are not material to the question). If I were to do that, I need to make the menu look the same as the menu in ASP.NET, as the users still need to feel like they are inside one "application".
How should I organize the Silverlight project(s) so that I can "deep link" from ASP.NET pages into particular modules in the Silverlight app? What is even the best idea for creating these different Silverlight "modules"? If I had something that would've been a page in ASP.NET (for example - Create Customer), should each one of those be a separate Silverlight app? Or should it be a separate User Control? Or something else? Should I reuse our shared ASP.NET menu, and deep link to different Silverlight "modules" even within the new application? Or should I reimplement the menu in Silverlight for navigation within the app? Are there menu controls for Silverlight that look similar to ASP.NET menus (with flyout submenus in this case)? Could I maybe even share a SiteMap XML file between them?

View 6 RepliesI'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..
View 1 RepliesI have the following scenario: a Silverlight application (constructed to be OOB) embedded at an ASP.NET website where, if the user already installed it, a label saying that is displayed; otherwise, an install button appears. Eventually I can update the .xap file available in the website.Now the problem: if the user executes the application through his Desktop/Start Menu, i'm able to update the application and suggest the user to restart it. But, if I update the .xap file and upload it again to the website, apparently no "Silverlight update" occurs, it is displayed as a new application (if the user install it again, an application icon is displayed at his desktop).

I recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.
When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.
Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"
Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....
It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.
UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...
Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:
<div class='<asp:Literal ID="CssClassLiteral" runat="server"></asp:Literal>'>
It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?
I was not able to do unit testing for our existing web site project. I converted the web site project to a web application project. I did some unit testing and changes on the converted web application project. However, my co-worker was doing UI testing on the web site project. We need put UI testing and unit testing to the web application project. Is it possible to move the UI testing code that my co-worker did to the web application project I am working? If so, how do you do it?

I've got two projects: a .Net 4.0 Console Application and an Asp.Net 4.0 Website (they are in the same solution). Now I'd like to include the console application (its .exe) in the web application, because I need to run it on the server when the user clicks on a certain button.
Now I would like to include it in a way that the console application will be updated whenever I recompile the solution, so it stays up to date.
So... how can I include my .exe in my web app?
I got this error in a project I did a while back. I think this was a web site project that i converted to a web app project. This was a while ago. This is an app I'm trying to run on my local machine. I'm not using IIS.

When I make an asp.net web application and add class libraries to the solution, the website project itself has a folder with the same name/contents as the class library.
Eg I make a web application called Test, add a project which is a class library, to the solution, called testAbc, and then there is a folder at the root of the website project called testAbc with the contents of the class lib.

i have created a dynamic web site that is made of these parts
1- Main Site (clients use this part to view the main site
2-Control Panel side (Admins can view and manage the First Part's content)

I have been working with ASP.net for a while now and was very familiar with how the page lifecycle worked. I am now trying to incorporate Silverlight into my ASP.net project and I am a little confused on how it works with the ASP page lifecycle.
For example, with Silverlight, I understand you need to access the server using the web service. I am able to populate a Silverlight datagrid by calling a stored proc through the web service in the loaded event. My problem is the DataGrid does not populate until ALL the code in the loaded event has executed. As you can see below, I want to do a simple calculation after I populate the DataGrid. I need to populate the DataGrid first and then do the calculation, but the calculation is done before the grid populates.
What I need to happen:
When I call 'tpService.getStepsAsync()', I need it to go to the web service to grab the data and then populate the DataGrid. Then I need 'a = 2 + 2' to execute. How can I get this to occur?

I have two projects: A web application project, that has a webpage that hosts a Silverlight application, as well as a web service A Silverlight application project, the one hosted in the above web application
If I debug the Silverlight application, it wants to run this with a generated web page, which will of course not start my web application, and web service calls fails due to some cross-site security model. So even if I have the web application running, the Silverlight application won't use it.
If I debug the Web application (that is, set it as a start project and hit Debug), then the Silverlight application is apparently correctly hosted, but I can't debug it. Any breakpoints in it shows up as those hollow circles.
So what am I doing wrong? How should I configure my projects so that I can start the web application, host my Silverlight application, and debug it?
I'm betting it is one of those "dough" moments when someone tells me, but I can't figure it out.
This is Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.
Does anyone know how to do this? I built a backend c# class in asp.net but want to access these same classes without recreating them in silverlight. Is this a possibility?
