MVC :: NullReferenceException When Deploying To IIS 6 - Failed In Global.asax.cs File

Apr 9, 2010

I am developing a small asp.net mvc intranet application for our company. Right now the home page will get the Windows username from the windows logged on user and make a call to our active directory based on that username to get more detailed info about the user (email, ect.) Everything works great on my local Visual Studio 2008 server. But when I deploy all the files to my IIS 6.0 server I get the following:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
STPIntranet.MvcApplication.Session_Start() in C:Documents and SettingscsallemiMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projects<ProjectName>Global.asax.cs:50

System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +155

It is failed in my Global.asax.cs file where I try to populate a custom User object (has a username and email property). In line 50 where the error is occuring I make a call to a class called SecurityUtil to get the username from WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() and then get the email by making a call into our active directory. I almost want to say that the necessary libraries are not getting added in either my project dll or web.config file because of the null pointer. Also, the error line is point to my local file structure (C:Documents and SettingscsallemiMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2008Projects) and not the file structure residing on my iis 6.0 machine.

Configuration :: After Deploying Website, Login Failed For User 'DB_USERNAME'?

Aug 16, 2010

first here is my connection string:

"Data Source=tcp:sql2k803.discountasp.net;Initial Catalog=SQL2008_736225_aldookandb;User ID=SQL2008_736225_aldookandb_user;Password=******; "

note that i can successfully connect to the db using the user 'SQL2008_736225_aldookandb_user' when i use a remote connection tool, such as sql server managment studio

And you can reproduce this problem, see it live and see the stack trace by doing the following:

A) :

1.go to my website [URL]
2.login as username: Teacher1 password: 123456 (Note that you have been logged in successfully)
3. go to the link in the upper right corner where it says (Teacher Page)
4. booooom!

B):

1. go to the website and create an account as a "Teacher"
2. do steps 2 to 4 from above and same problem occurs

Configuration :: C# Web Application Slow Once Published

Jan 12, 2011

My application runs quickly when debugging locally, but slows down to an almost unusable state once published. Oddly, the published version seems to be grabbing data very quickly from MSSQL - it's the part where I'm updating datatables and gridviews that is very slow. For example:

C# - Application Runs When Debugging But Not When Published

May 10, 2010

When publishing my web application and then running it will return the error

"Could not load file or assembly 'BaseApplicationName' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format."

However if I run the application through debugging (f5) it runs correctly.

I guess what it comes down to is

what differences are there when running an application through debugging vs publishing it that would cause a problem like this?

When publising I have it set to delete all existing.

History of how it started... I added the 32 bit Oracle.DataAccess dll to my 64 bit system. It would not work and crash giving the same error as above but with the Oracle.DataAccess name instead of the baseApplicationName. I have since removed all references to it and removed the dll to try and get it to run without it once again.

Configuration :: Anonymous Access For Published Web Application?

May 5, 2010

I check WindowsPrincipal.Identity.Name against Active Directory security groups before allowing the user to edit data. If the user is not authorized I just present a read-only version of the data.

When I run my web app from the IDE everything works fine. I published the web app, made sure anonymous access was disabled, and invoked it from IE. The read-only page came up.

I then added code to write to the event log to display the WindowPrincipal.Identity.Name and saw that instead of displaying the user name, it was instead showing the server name. I verified again that Anonymous Access is disabled and integrated security is on.

Deploying An ASP MVC Application To IIS7?

Feb 12, 2010

I've got an ASP MVC (1.0) application. It works fine locally via visual studio and on our dev server which runs IIS6. But when I try to deploy to the Test server (running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2) I get only :"Could not load file or assembly '<ApplicationName>' or one of its dependencies. Access is denied" (where <ApplicationName> is the name of my application). This is followed by a "FileLoadException", a "ConfigurationErrorsException" and two "HttpException" (all with the same message as above)I deployed via publishing to an empty directory, whose contents were then zipped and transferred to the site directory on the test server. If I copy the directories contents to my IIS installation it works fine. I've checked that networkservices has permission to access the site directories and the temporary directories, which were the solutions I found via google,

Configuration :: Deploying Small Changes With Application

Jan 19, 2011

I have a Web application that I have built, published and deployed on a Web Server. It all works great and up to now I have been able to get people to stop using it whilst I published any changes. It is an internal system but I now have firefighters that can be using this 24x7. I am probably being totally thick but how should I deploy small changes in codebehind pages without haviing to do a full deployment to the web server. I am learning ASP.NET as I go along and I am a bit confused with how I can update the web application without affecting users.

Deploying A Web Application From The Command Line?

Jun 17, 2010

Im looking to deploy a web application on a build server.

It is a very small web app and so far i have written a nice little console app that checks out from SVN and then calls msbuild on the .sln file.

This of course is not the same as publishing a web app and so far have not found a programatic way of publishing.

After msbuild has run can i simply delete all .cs and .vb files and then deploy?

or

Should i really try and find a way to publish programatically?

Deploying Web Forms Application Using Routing On IIS 6?

Jun 1, 2010

To clarify, the scenarios I am looking at involve deploying ASP.NET 4 Web Forms application that employ RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute:

public class Global : System.Web.HttpApplication
{
public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes)
{
RouteTable.Routes.MapPageRoute("questionnaires", "questionnaires", "~/Pages/Questionnaires/List.aspx", false);

[Code]....

Scenario 1: The application is NOT hosted as a virtual directory in an existing website, but is a stand-alone website (it is its own starting point). It has its own application pool. When deployed, it worked without any tinkering.

Scenario 2: The application is hosted as a virtual directory underneath an existing website. It also has its own application pool. However, I received 404 errors when trying to access the routes I had mapped out. Fortunately, I had experience getting MVC to work in 3.5 sp 1, so I tried that method: opened the properties dialog of the virtual director, went to the "Directory" tab, click the "Configuration" button, and added a Wildcard application map to the aspnet_isapi.dll and unchecked the "Verify that file exists" checkbox. This made it work.

My question is why did I have to add a wildcard application map in the second scenario but not the first? If it helps, the root website that hosts the virtual directory in the second scenario is set up with ASP.NET version 2.0.50727.
