Routing Not Firing When Site Is Published To Remote Host?
Feb 5, 2010
I have a website that was originally written in webforms to which I have added MVC functionality. When debugging locally it works fine, however, once published and uploaded to my host the routes do not work and return a 404. I am pretty sure that I have uploaded all the correct files. Would just appear that routing is not working.
(the site will still serve normal aspx pages fine)
I think the problem may be related to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1772975/mixing-asp-net-mvc-into-asp-net-webforms
But I cant see from that thread what the solution was. It looks like it might be something to do with the app_pool mode - but I am running in integrated mode, which is right AFAIK
UPDATE 2
So I think I have routing working. I basically created a new MVC app and went through theweb config file line by line and made sure I have everything I needed. Funnily, none of the tutorials online mention the correct additions you need to make. I have have another issue mind you... When i load my mvc page I am greeted with the message: The SessionStateTempDataProvider requires SessionState to be enabled.
I've added a line to web.config to enable sessions (wasn't aware they were off) and it still doesnt work.
UPDATE I created a new asp.net MVC project and ended up going through web.config line by line and ensuring that everything that related to MVC was included in my hybrid app. Suffice to say that none of the guides mention all the settings that are required (i was using the book professional asp.net mvc 1.0). I then included the global.asax file which is not published and set up a route so that a request for / was not being caught by MVC. I also had to enable sessions in web.config.

I have a web site running on IIS7 on a remote server. I would like to do the following: Create a new subfolder under the root virtual directory. Create a new app pool. Add this new app pool to the new subfolder Normally, I would do this manually in IIS by first creating the app pool, and then right-clicking the sub folder an choose "add application", but I need to do this programmatically in C#. I've managed to make the above points 1 and 2 work, but I can't find the way to adding the application to the sub folder. This is the code I have used so far for 1 and 2:
[Code]....
So, I need to add "MyAppPool" to the "NytSite" folder. Is this even the correct way to do this?

What's the best way to adjust the path destination for a routing table created in the global.asax Application_Start event based on the domain/sub domain/host? The following worked in IIS6, but with IIS7 the request object is decoupled from the Application_Start event and therefore does not work anymore:

I created an ASP.NET site in Visual Web devloper 2010 & then published it to our webserver. Due to the nature of the site, there are several users updating the content on the site (e.g. news pages). Is there a simple way to merge these changes back into my project? Can I just copy the published site back over my project folder which should overwrite the aspx pages but leave the code behinds untouched?

I have an asp.net that produces a Word document. I want to allow users to download the file to their local drive. I use a hyperlink to achieve this and it works fine from my development site. However, when the website is accessed from a non development machine, I am sent to the proper directory, but instead of the open/save/cancel dialog I am presented with a "Convert File" dialog. Any of the selected file types I select download unusable files. I think this has to do with office being installed on the local machine on which I am attempting the download. Is there any way I can simply download a file from a virtual file to my local drive?

I'm getting an error in Parallels Plesk for SQL Server database on restore the cause of which is a mystery to me. Here is the support ticket I sent my hosting company:
I'm in the process of restoring my databases and the first one restored just fine. The second one called ***** for *****.com failed with the following error:
Error: dbbackup failed: Unable to restore database 'alienreports' Not valid backup The media family on device C:WINDOWSTEMPlocalhostalienreports*******.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. VERIFY DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
This happened both when using the .bak file from my old host and after restoring that file on my local machine using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 just fine before backing it up and getting the same error when trying to upload and restore.

We have a virtual server hosted to the third party which we access through remote desktop. We have Sql server 2008 on Windows 2008. I created a website on my local hard drive and now we are ready to deploy. My question is what are the recommendations for publishing websites? What steps I need to take care of? Is it possible not to deploy the "code-behind" files. Incase of hacking of windows server, I do not want somebody to see my .vb files or Is it possbile that I can convert the whole thing except aspx files in to a strong dll?

I'm getting a lot of these error messages in my logs on one of my servers and intermittently on two others.Googling didn't reveal very much information, mostly related to file uploads or downloads being interrupted. My pages are basically just text files with "ok" in them that only have .aspx extension for future plans, there's no actual code powering the pages. Servers are all Windows Server 2008 RC2 x64 running IIS7 / ASP.NET 4.Statistically it's happening well under 1% of the time but because of the volume of traffic that still clutters my event log with 2 or 3 of these messages per minute.Edit:tracked down the problem, setting buffering to true stopped it occurring.

we are having some weird issues with URL Routing in ASP.NET 3.5.
We have a search box that does a search and redirects to a routed URL.
When we search for the first time (aka Press a button that forces a postback) everythign works as expected. we get:
1. BeginRequest event.
2. Determines Route
3. Calls Routehandler to match the route item to the actual destination page
4. Routes the url appropriately.
After you do one search successfully and try again it fails to call the BeginRequest event. Because of this the routing data never gets called and so the url is never routed to its correct destination. What is weirder still if we append a "/" (trailing slash) to the url after the initial postback it DOES work properly again.
So our search route looks like this
mydomain.com/Search
entering a term and pressing the SEARCH button would yield a result url like this:
mydomain.com/Search/Results/MySearchTerm
Going back (after 1 successful search) you then need to use this url or else BeginRequest will never fire:
mydomain.com/Search/ < (note the extra "/" at the end)
why the BeginRequest event never fires unless the slash is appended?

i have an ASP.NET application that needs to check a database daily and send emails.
I am using cache item expire to do that, on my localhost everything works fine but on my shared hosting server the CacheItemRemovedCallback events doesnt fire.
The code that works on my localhost is :
'test code, set to expire after 1 minute
onRemove = New CacheItemRemovedCallback(AddressOf CacheItemRemovedCallback)
HttpContext.Current.Cache.Insert(DummyCacheItemKey, "SendEmail", Nothing, DateTime.Now.AddSeconds(60), Cache.NoSlidingExpiration, CacheItemPriority.Normal,onRemove)
Could be something that blocks this code on my shared hosting sever?

Not sure if this is the right forum area for this question, so feel free to move it where it needs to be.I have a client that has asked to move an existing ASP-based website to a new web host. I've done host transfers before, but never an ASP-driven one.
So my questions are:
- Is there a way I can download the whole site as it exists and "test" it on my local machine somehow? (without having to install IIS preferebaly, it might already be installed to be honest)
- I'm sure the website uses a database back-end as it uses a CMS. What issues will I run into with regards to getting an identical database created on the new web host? Thanks all. I'm not feeling good about this transfer for some reason, mainly because I'm not that fluent with ASP, so if something doesn't transfer smoothly, I'm scared I may not be able to "fix" it in a timely manner.

I have set up a development server (Win Server 2003) with IIS 6.0. I have the .NET Framework 2.0 and 4.0 installed. My web host (where my app will run) has .NET 3.5. Will it work for me to set up my development server with 4.0 in IIS, and then create a new website in Visual Studio (2010) that targets the .NET 3.5 framework (aimed at my development server)? want to be able to publish the site to my web host (with .NET 3.5).

I'm running this asp.net site with an AJAX updatePanel on my local machine, and everything works just fine, since it's where I developed it. Now, a few days ago, I uploaded the files to my web-host and assigned every single DataBase, and there is no error messages, even though it's still set to debug mode. There is a problem though, whenever I click an element which triggers my asp.net AJAX updatePanel to update, the whole site is updated(which it should not, only the Panel), and my jQuery's (document).ready is called every time as well.

IIS6 VS2008 .... I am trying to make a site that some folders will run on different ports of IIS but with the same site name.
So p.e. i would like mysite.com and mysite.com/hello to opetate on port 83 and mysite/otherport to operate(with any subfolders) on port 84.
Is this possible?I want to have 2 different membership databases on the same site so i'm thinkg either host a complete different site inside mysite/otherport or have multiple web.configs on the inner folders. The site is actually redirected to a server IIS so p.e. the site mysite.com is actually redirected to myserver.myiis.com:83
