I have firstname, lastname, address, city, state and zip, but I only want to use the distinct on these fields first and last name. However when i use the distinct function I get a distinct on all the selected rows. I just want to distinct firstname and lastname and display the other fields. for example,
Mary Smith New York
Mary Smithy New York
Mary Smith Maine
I would like the result to be:
Mary Smith New York
Mary Smithy New York
I don't care about Mary Smith Maine, because i am only using the distinct for "Mary Smith" firstname and last name and showing the city.

Using Select Distinct On An Already Created DataTable Object?
Nov 16, 2010I have an already created DataTable object which i am using for my girdview (asp.net) i also need to bind a column of that object to a DropDownList. The datatable has the correct details in the column but the column contains more that 1 of the same name in the column - hence I would love to just do some kind of SELECT DISTINCT on the datatable and copy it to a new datatable for use with binding the dropdown.
This would allow me to save resources by making another trip to the database.
Here is an example, the current datatable has a column called items and in this column has the following entries
1
1
1
1
5
5
6
And of course i need only unique items for binding to my dropdown, hence i need the following data
1
5
6
Of course i don't want to change the original datatable object but rather make a copy of it will the new details.

May 2, 2010I'm using asp.net login on a SQL Database.
I have 12 users in my User tabel - one of the user I don't want to have in my select (the user is an admin).
I tried this:

I also tried:
WHERE (dbo.aspnet_Roles.RoleName <> 'Administrators')
Both time it took the user into the table....
If I instead try this
WHERE (dbo.aspnet_Roles.RoleName = 'Administrators')
I get only one row (as expected).
What is wrong with the above sql statement - why can't I get 11 users and not them all (12 users)?

Jan 6, 2011I am trying to write a stored procedure that takes out a list of blog entries from a table (tblFeedEntry) as well as the amount of comments that each blog entry has gotten (tblFeedComments) but all I can get is the total amount of comments of all blog entries together, displayed on all entries. This is how my code looks today:

I am guessing that the problem is that the declared variable is not picking up the id of the blog entries, instead it picks up everything. The original select and the select in the declared variable are not connected. How do I connect them?

Jan 23, 2011I am moving to the world of ASP.NET from an Access VBA / VB6 background and having read a few books on the subject I am still confused about communicating with SQL server in VB with ASP.NET.
As a very quick explination I am used to communicating with the server by passing strings containing the data I want to write (or read) such as:

I do not seem to be able to work out from ALAX, Dynamic Data, Bound Controls, DataViews, connecting to services with SOAP, DataSources and all of the other methods of database communication in ASP.NET which is the right system to do the simple reads and writes in SQL that I want to do.
At present I have a page with all of the controls on it required to collect a block of data I want to insert, it is all now fully validated but although I can build the SQL INSERT command in a string I cannot figure out how to fire it over to the local SQL Express server. Am I even doing this correctly or do I need to look at other controls?

Dec 22, 2010The drop down list is used to determine what search criteria will be used to find an invoice. I tried to set the Select method in the switch statement. I don't understand how to set the Select Method and the select parameters programmatically though . I tried a few different ways but can't make the compiler happy. My ODS is in scope in the code behind. I'm not able to access it's properties though. The BAL resides in a separate project that is a ClassLibrary. I also have a using statement for the ClassLibrary project in the code behind.

My issue is if the user doesnot select any of the above three then a message gets displayed as "Please select one search criteria" or if the user doesnot enter the date in correct format then i dispaly "Please enter date in mm/dd/yy" format. But what is happening is first time if the user doesnot select any then "Please select one search criteria" is getting displayed and after this message gets displayed if the user enters wrong format of date then both the messages are displayed.

For some rows in the gridview everything but the category ddl populates correctly. If I click the row a second time the category ddl displays the correct category.
