SQL Server :: Update Parameter Doesn't Update If Null?
Sep 27, 2010
I have a vb.net page that has an optional parameter. If a user enters data for that field, and clicks save, it saves fine via the stored procedure. HOWEVER, if the user changes their mind, and wants to erase the data they entered, they go to the text field, and delete the characters, and click save, but no matter what, the stored procedure will not save the fact that they erased the data (it won't set it back to NULL). If the user enters a space, the stored procedure will save the space, and if they enter different data, it will save the other data. I can't figure out how to get it back to letting them set it to Null? I think this is because it's an optional parameter, and the stored proc is used by several forms (Some of those forms do not include this parameter), but this form utilizes that optional paramater.
Here's my stored procedure...

I have a typical gridview/formview master control setup. When I try to update or insert I don't get any errors but it also doesn't work. When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

I have a page that binds data from DB to a DetailsView.I want to use the auto-generated Update command.
Everything went OK, and also updating was successful, but if I remove any field that I don't want to have chance to update, then the Update command doesn't update! the old values retain!
I mean: if all of the fields are present in the detailsView, the update will be OK, otherwise, the update will NOT update any thing.I've tried to mark the fields that I don't want to view as "Visible = 'false'" but with no good results!

What's wrong with the following code?
[Code]....
After the SubmitChanges call, the Text field in data2 wasn't changed. According to the NerdDinner sample, I supposedly can just write to my data object and then call SubmitChanges.

I have a pretty basic sql update statement that is looking for lots of parameters. It's possible that since a field isn't required, that a user will not make a radio button selection. If that is the case, I just want the field in my sql table to remain as a null value. But, what I have now, updates the sql value to a "0". How do I tell sql that if there isn't a value for this parameter, to update the field as Null? Here are my parameters and part of my sql update statement. What am I doing wrong?

I have a Gridview where I can modify the Time portion of a DateTime field. The update method is working well, except for one thing:The field should only allow the time portion, e.g 08:23:09 but on the Database it saves it as a full DateTime, e.g 10/18/2010 08:23:09 AM. The problem is that upon editing, instead of adding the existing Date portion, it adds the current Date portion. So if I am editing the item from the last example into 08:25:09 instead of adding it as 10/18/2010 08:25:09 AM it adds it as 10/20/2010 08:25:09 AM which is obviously undesired behavior.Here's how I am doing the update:
protected void grvOutHour_RowUpdating(object sender, GridViewUpdateEventArgs e)
{
GridView grvOutHour = (GridView)this.grvReport.Rows[grvReport.EditIndex].FindControl("grvOutHour");
TextBox txtBox = (TextBox) grvOutHour.Rows[e.RowIndex].FindControl("txtEditOutHour");

as seen from the title my sql doesnt update the data that has been inserted by my function. But in my function it works perfectly as it returns '1' when i executenonquery. however it only works when i insert a record which has a date later than today's date. which is weird as there is no validation in that page and if there were to have a validation, it would not run the function.

I have a function that checks for a username and if it finds the username it will allow the user to update the user, there are 3 main columns: Name,Age,isFemale. I have the enduser supply the information and then I try to update the record but I get a sql error for "not a valid" column.console app:
[Code]....
I pass the spIsFemale by using an enum, here is the Person Class with function.
[Code]....
I get an error that column isFemale is not valid. The isFemale column is a bit type. If it's a 1, it's a female, if 0 male. this is more of a test area and I'm trying to update records or create new one's if the name does not exist.II am new to C # and I am just trying to learn new ideas and methods within C sharp.

Can anyone reliably get the EDS to save a nullable column to the databse as a "null" when bound to any of the controls such as "FormView"?I have tried using several different UpdateParameters (Session, ControlParamater, Parameter, etc). I have tried setting "ConvertEmptyStringToNull" to true and leaving the property off entirely. Nothing works. On my "Inserts" it works fine.(I have made sure the column is set to nullable = true in the Entity Designer.....)

I'm populating an object model with a linq query. The model looks like this:
MyModel{
DateTime AppointDate {get; set;}
int TotalAppoints {get; set;}
int AppointDuration {get; set;}
}
The linq-to-sql query looks like that:
public static GetAppointsFromDB(params){
var MyQuery = from....where...
select new MyModel{
AppointDate = ...,
TotalAppoints = ...,
AppointDuration =...};
return MyQuery as MyModel;}
In the master page, I'm looking to load the result of this query in the session like this:
if (Session["Appoints"] == null) {Session["Appoints"] = GetAppointsFromDB(...);}
When I run with the code, the session is always null. I added this line a second time, just right after, and the query runs again. When I'm looking to use the session at some other point in the code, it is null too there too. The query works because when I put a breakpoint on the return statement, I see the object properly filled.

I have got a problem about setting the optional parameter to NULL in sql sp. Initially I set all the parameters null in the sql sp. That's OK. But I would like to set the parameters to Null again if a particular parameter has a value of - 1 by using the "IF ELSE" statement block. However, the problem was that I was unable to set the parameter to NULL in the IF ELSE statement. So please correct my IF ELSE statement in the store procedure. This is really urgent and important for my project.

I have a ASP.NET page that contains a formview and ObjectDataSource. On the page I only have 4 fields that are bound to fields in my datasource. My datasource contains 10 fields. When I call an update it is setting the 6 fields I am not binding to to null. The only way I can find it get around this is to add hidden fields for the 6 unbound fields and bind them to the datasource.Is there anyway around this without using hidden fields?

I've a problem updating objects with the ADO.NET Data Services.
First I've create a service, which can load and store the data. Its a basic data context which implements the IUpdatable-interface.
After that, I've created a simple service-client. I just created it with the 'Add Service'-reference in Visual Studio. Basically this service seams to work. I can query for the objects and store new objects. However I cannot update objects.
This is my update-code on the client:
var ctx =
new TeamDataContext(new Uri("http://localhost:8637/TeamInfoService.svc"));
var team = ctx.Teams.First();
team.TeamName = "New Team Name";
ctx.UpdateObject(team);
ctx.SaveChanges();
What my main issue is, that IUpdatable.SetValue() isn't called for the object which I want to update. Only the IUpdatable.SaveChanges() is called without updating the objects on the server.
When I create a new object, the IUpdatable.SetValue is called on the server to set the property.
So what I am doing wrong? Are my expectations wrong? Is IUpdatable.SetValue supposed to be called when updating a object? Or do I need to do additional things to do updates?
Edit: I just watched the HTTP-requests between the client and the server. The client send a HTTP-Merge request with the changes. However I still don't know why the changes aren't stored.

I need to render a chart control inside UpdatePanel, I have done this part.
The difficult part is that now I need to pass parameter/parameters to server side and grab it in code-behind
so that I can use this information to render the chart.
The parameter/parameters can only be grab in client side by javascript since it is jQuery.data().
I am trying to work around this by saving it to a hidden field, that is not neat though.

I have a FormView which is bound to an SQLDataSource. When a user clicks on a save button the form, I need to write any changes made to the FormView back to the table.
I have a Stored Procedure on my MSSQL 2005 database that should be executed when the user clicks on the save button.
It appears the Update is firing, but when I trap the DbCommand object in the SQLDataSource's 'Updating' event, all of the parameters that should be passed to the Stored Procedure are coming through as NULLs. Consequently, the Stored Procedure isn't updating anything.
In the click event of the save button I'm explicitly firing the SQLDataSource's Update method:
[Code]....
The parameters in the SQLDataSource <UpdateParameters></UpdateParameters> section appear to be correct.
Can anyone give me an idea on what to investigate to figure out why it appears the Update is only picking up NULLs?
