Security :: Missing Menu Items Via Roles?

I have a site that was working fine with security. I needed to create my own RoleProvider to give the ability to add Groups to roles based on certain criteria which I successfully did.
The problem is, since then, my main site (a Single Sign On Site) will not show the proper menu items for my users roles. The funny part is that right after I publish it, or restart the application, it works fine. Once it has been running for awhile, I lose my menu items.
If I manually type in the URL to go to one of the pages that I cannot see the menu item and perform some function, all of a sudden all my menu items reappear.

I have a custom menu, which leverages the standard asp.net sitemap. It works well but some of my pages are dynamically generated by URL rewriter, so they don't sit in the sitemap XML file. At the moment I rolled a custom solution which shows/hides menu items via CSS class and a programmatic check of the role that the user is in. It works ok until I visit a dynamic page that doesn't exist in the sitemap file. I've tried the "roles" attribute in the sitemap file with security trimming but it isn't working because I have a custom menu.
Is there a way I could leverage the roles attribute in the sitemap file to show/hide menu items for my custom control below, even when some pages are not in the sitemap? My menu control is below...

I have a menu with 3 Items; Home, Begineers and Experts. Menu is implemented in a masterpage and I build 3 more separate webpages which inherit the master.Userneeds to login and I store the User category in a Session["Category"].Can I disable the menu item "Expert" depending on the Session["Category"]? I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition on Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 and when I am editing Visual Basic and want to add an item to the toolbox I click on Choose Items... and from that point I can't find important controls (items) like Windows Media Player or Adobe PDF Viewer. My web app has 3roles, I need to lock down certain sitemap menu items based on the users role and what I'm using isn't working.
my roles are Supervisor, manager, and User.

I only want those roles to see those menu options, I do not want someone with a user role to see those options at all. Currently if I log into my site with a user role, I'm seeing everything on the menu (via the sitemap).

I'm trying to create an asp menu for a website. The site will have 2 levels of user Master users (which will have more options) and Sub users which will have limited menu options.
I was wonder does anyone knows if a way to hide menu items? I've tried google but I can't really find much.

Newb question: what is the standard practice for assigning roles to newly signed-on members. Is it usually manual or is there a way of automatically assigning roles. Being completely new to this, I am confronted by the issue of my site having three different roles that new members could fall into, but am unsure about how to assign each a role. I can't imagine having to go through the process manually if I have thousands of members.

In books and tutorials, I see a Website menu between View and Build. However, in my copy of VS 2008, I have a Project menu instead. I imagine that I didn't make an appropriate setting for a web site developer the first time I opened VS. How do I change the configuration or what do I need to do to get the Website menu?

According to the book im reading i should have more menus such as the "Block Formatt, Font Name, Font Size" in my Style Application toolbar, but i dont have anywhere near as many as the book suggests, Just a drop down menu that has "manual" and "automatic"

I'm having a little problem with the popout icon in the ASP menu control not appearing when the sitemap node doesn't have a URL. Take the following sitemap nodes as an example:

</siteMapNode>
<siteMapNode title="Top 2">
<siteMapNode title="Sub 2" url="~/Sub2.aspx" />
</siteMapNode>
The first top level item - Top 1 - gets a popout CSS class written to the tag that spans the label. However the second top level item - Top 2 - does not get the class. Given this class is generally used to hold the arrow indicating there's more content beneath the item there's a bit of a usability problem here. Does anyone have a workaround for this? Or alternatively, is a sitemap node without a URL attribute somehow breaking the intended usage of the control?
