Security :: Unable To Connect To Database While Configuring Membership?
Feb 26, 2010
I tried creating a login page as ASP.NET web application. Then as we have to configure the page to connect to the database to retrieve user details, i clicked on the ASP.NET configuration under Website control.. I was taken to the configuration page with three tabs.. Security was the tab that i was supposed to configure.. But i am not able to go through to the security tab. I get the following error message.
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database."

I wonder how to incorporate the view of my table?
Example:
I have a table:
- Products
- Customers
I have multiple users, each one to see what Products and the parties if the request with your username and password.
How does this connect to the Membership table?

I am in the begininng stages of designing (or redisigning) a site. I am using VWD Express 2010 and the project is configured for .net 4.0. I am designing it offline so its currently just on my laptop, which is also running sql server express 2008 R2.
When I ran the ASP.Net Configuration tool, it automatically created a database called aspnetdb in the app_data folder where it stores all the user and roll info. How can I use a different database that has the same schema as well as some additional tables of my own. I want to point it to mylocally running sql server.

I have created a web service that authenticates with username and password, works fine.
Basically this one, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff649647.aspx
Now I also want to connect to this web service using client certificates, works fine
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc948997.aspx
But I would like to when authenticated via client certificates, connect that certificate to a user in the membership database. So that I can use Roles.IsUserInRole(...) and such.
I thought that, well if I implement a Custom certificate Validator http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms733806.aspx then I could check for example subject and map that against a created username in the membership database.
But in the class X509CertificateValidator public override void Validate(X509Certificate2 certificate) I don't have the same ability as when the user is authenticated
like
void OnAuthenticateRequest(object source, EventArgs eventArgs)
HttpApplication app = (HttpApplication)source;
Basically how can I do this
app.Context.User = new
GenericPrincipal(new
GenericIdentity(username,
"Membership Provider"),roles);
within
public override
void Validate(X509Certificate2 certificate)
and if that is not possible, can this be solved differently? Bottom line, how do I connect a client certificate to a user account in the membership database. Is there a MSDN article on how to do this?

so this is my first Solution using the Entity Framework (EF). Here are my steps so far:
1) Created Database named: BSA with an owner of username/password (AspNetServicesUser/password)
2) Created Entity Data Model (EDM) in a separate project (contained within the same solution)
3) Created an ASP.NET Web Application with basic functionality (new project within the same solution)
4) Added Reference to the EDM in Web App and added Connection String to the EF
5) Decided I wanted ASP.NET Membership added to the Web App
6) Configured SQL Server for Application Services using aspnet_regsql.exe on BSA database
Now, I need to know:
a) How do I create the connectionString for the Web.config file in the WebApp?
Errors I receive:
I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Security" Tab:
Login failed for user 'AspNetServicesUser'.
I get this error using the ASP.NET Configuration Tool under the "Provider" Tab --> Select a single provider for all site management data --> Test
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.

I have a ASP.Net program written in C# that uses a database stored in the AppData directory, the program works perfectly on my development (Win7SQL 2008R2) when I deploy to a Win2008R2SQl 2008 R2 server the program is unable to connect to the database. I'm using the connection string below. Several sites suggest I set the Application Pool to use 'Network Service' as this has Modify permission to the AppData directory, I have done this but it still won't work, another site suggested I Application Pool to "Load User Profile = True" but still no joy.
[code].....
I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." in my app and "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:inetpubwwwrootADPhonebookApp_DataDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." in the Application Event Log

I have now been trying for many days to get Membership on my website working but cannot. My aspnet db is a web sqlserver 2008 db.
My issues are
1). The MembersPages are still accessible by unauthenicated users in the deployed site. Using the local development server hyperlinking to a MemberPage does infact re-direct the user to the login page and the return url shown is the correct MemberPage selected. But on the deployed site clicking the hyperlink simply takes the un-authenticated user straight to the MemberPage.
2). On both sites, deployed and local, on clicking a login status control, the user is taken to the login page and is correctly authenticated, but the login page return url is always the default page and that is where the authenticated user is returned to even though the destination url in the login control states a MemberPage within the MembersPages directory.
3). In trying to overcome these issues, I have on several occasions deleted the login control and re-introduced it. Although the login control shows while debugging and when the site is deployed, on the login page in the IDA, there is instead an error message stating "Error Creating Control - Login1. Duplicate Component name 'Login1'. Component names must be unique and case sensitive. I'm not sure how to get rid off the duplication.

I used the ASP.net Web Site Administration tool to create a database with two users and two roles. The database created successfully and is showing up in Solution Explorer in the App_Data folder of my project, as expected. The problem is, that when I click on the database I get an error message saying that "SQL Server database files (.mdf) require SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2008 Express to be installed and running on the local computer." I, in fact, have 3 versions of SQL Server running on my computer. SQL Server Express (default instance), SQL Server Express (named instance for Outlook 2010 Business Contact Manager), and SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer Edition). If I create a new connection in Server Explorer and then attach the database file, it attaches fine. It's only in Solution Explorer that it somehow is not connecting.

I am simply create a form that accept some user details and insert some details into membership table and rest of other table.
Membership.CreateUser(username,password,email)
Roles.AddUserToRole(username,"user");
this will insert the details into the aspnet_users table and user is not assigned to any role and no membership record insert. Please give me some ideas how to do this.

In Visual Web Developer-2010, I have been trying to connect to IBM DB2 Database after installing the DB2 9.7 client (both supports VS2010/.Net4) so that I can use "ADO.NET Entity Data Model", but while clicking "New Connection" I can only see the list of Data Sources and Data Provider only related to MS SQL server. This is totally blocking my work, I am not able to work further since I cannot even establish the connection to my db2 database using this new editor so that I can create the edmx files in the solution for non MSSQL databases. Kindly provide me the solution ASAP, since my further work is blocking due to this.

I would like to use the Role Membership and User Security database as my application database too. That is, just add the tables and relationships required by my application's data access layer to the Membership and Roles Database to save on hosting fees, (I have to pay extra for having two databases instead of one). Of course, the connection string would have to be adjusted, but I don't see a downside considering the application's database is actually an Access database. What can I say, it was a requirement at the time.
Basically, I would like to do the opposite of this:

I installed sql server express 2008 R2, no problems.
I created a database and added a table, no problems.
I'm using the entity framework, I created and am using the .edmx file, no problems.
I created a form that reads from and submits to the table, no problems.
I added the membership tables to the database, now I have problems.
I can still read from and update my table fine, so clearly the connection string in my web.config still works. But I can't add a new user or do anything with the website administration tool. It can't find any providers, and under security, it tells me it can't login into the database. When I try to register a new user, I get a failed login error, again for my database user. Yet I can login fine through Server Management Studio with the same credentials.

Is it possible to use the Membership API with an already exisiting database? I have a database that is built around my own fields for the User and breaks down users into half a dozen different groups that determine their access to different parts of the site and exactly what they can do and see on different pages.

ASPNETDB Problem - Unable to connect to SQL Server database
now, after some real soul searching, i managed to get it working, however i want to do the following:
I have a table in a database I created called "Students". Now, I have a studentId and a password in that table. What I want to do is allow users to login using their accounts.
However, I am having real trouble doing this. I want to create a custom membership provider, etc.
I have been crawling through the net looking for ways to do it but some of the sites I visited had too much complicated code.
What is the best and easiest way to do this?

I am facing a very unique situation and need help. My problem is as follows:1. I have a basic ASP.NET website (3.5 is it helps on IIS 7) where I have implemented Membership for Authentication.2. The site caters to multiple companies (Say Company A, Company B etc.).3. For each company I need to have different database (SQL 2008). This is mandatory as i can use multiple Application in there.Now as far as the flow is concern its pretty simple:1. The user comes to this site with a QueryString like cid=123 (in actual there is a HttpModule for this, cid=123 is just for this forum purpose).2. The site using the cid=123 gets to know this user is for Company A (i have a WCF service for this, how it works is not a problem.), along with that I also get the connectionstring for the database this user should use.3. For Business implementation i have handled this nicely in my DAL Layer.4. The problem comes with Membership.5. In Membership I have writtent a custom provider, that assigns the connection on teh fly.6. But this happens only once for the application. i.e. the connectio string gets cached at application level.7. The connection string does not change untill I reset my IISwhere i can have a single WebSite, catering to different companies, using seperated databases and using Membership for Authorization.
public class CustomMembershipProvider : SqlMembershipProvider
{
public override void Initialize(string name, System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection config)
