In the IIS, it shows that the web app (i'm using) is using an application pool that uses NETWORK SERVICE account for identity. But when I debug/run my web app, User.Identity.Name shows that my windows user login instead. I checked my web.config file, and it does not have Impersonate enabled. In fact, I set it to false, and it still shows the same.

IP: All Unassigned
Port: 80
Host name: apps.mydomain.com
In DNS there is an ip address pointing to apps.mydomain.com. Site comes up fine when browsing to this hostname.
I want to get current windows logged in username from asp.net web apps. I enabled windows authentication and disabled anonymous. Using this ASP.Net code to test:
Response.Write(Page.User.Identity.Name);
However, browsing to http://apps.mydomain.com/site/ the application pool identity shows as the Page.User.Identity.Name value and not the current windows logged in username.
If I browse to http://servername/site/ then Page.User.Identity.Name will return current windows logged in username.
Is there something else I need to configure to get the current windows logged in username when using host header?

I have this web application where I need the currently logged in windows user Identity. I server on which I deployed this application does not support virtual directories. And I am not sure if that server is configured for "Integrated Windows Authentication."
I tried using:

HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name;
All these work and retrieve the appropriate currently logged in windows username when the application isn't deployed. But when I deploy it on this particular server, these methods do not give me nothing.
i developed a simple web application. A label and a button. On click of Button, the label will display Hello World.

After that also, it did not work.
We checked the permissions of the folder Temporary ASP.NET Files and for the Network Service user, we checked the Security Permissions and it has all the permissions as required.
Is it possible to remotly login into Windows using ASP? What I'm trying to accomplish is, that I could remotly call a ASP page on my server (Apache on Win Vista) that logs in a user on that system. For example remotly I start a Wake-On-Lan to start the computer (server). It boots up to the user login screen where I would have to enter my password to login to the desktop. Because the service is already running at that time, I would like to open a ASP page from my client that I could pass the windows user/password and the ASP-service would login the user on the server machine.

I want to set up access permissions for the folder which resides in another computer, but in the same domain. I located that folder right-clicked to open its properties form, clicked to Security tab and pressed Add button which displayed Add user form with correct domain name in the location field. I referred to the account with following syntax:
<domain name><server name>$
because I learned that NETWORK SERVICE account uses machine account when connected to other computers in the domain. However, the system couldn't find the account, so refuses to add the account. Without the domain name it adds a user, but that user seems to be local user, not web server's NETWORK SERVICE account. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, the above syntax worked when I created login for the sql server which is different computer from the web server.
my app gets data from sql server using windows authentication but when i create a virtual directly as part of the deployment, the user that tries to authenticate against sql server is ASPNET rather than the windows user as a result authentication fails. I change the "Directory Security" setting in virtual directory properties to disable Anonymous access and leave Windows authentication checked but no luck.

I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the DI pattern as well. (Give the class an attribute of type IRepository and then pass in a Repository object when you instantiate the controller.)
What I don't understand, however, is the proper way to Mock the Windows Principal object available through User.Identity. Is this part of the HttpContext? have a link to an article that demonstrates this (or a recommendation for a book)?

Anyone accessing from within the office will be doing so by going to it's local IP address (i.e. 192.168.x.x) whereas external users will be browsing to the public domain name.

For each logged user I want to cache some properties like status or the number of friend requests, from the db.
I can create custom class which would do it but I thought it will be better to extend the existing User.Identity property. Something like this:

I use FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage(userName.Trim(), false); to set the User.Identity.Name field that I reference later. When I execute this line, the User.Identity object does not update at all; it contains whatever it was previously set to. All the documentation I see online says this should update my User.Identity object with the correct name, but I don't see that happening.

am writing a web service in vb.net/asp.net 2, that needs user's name. It works fine when the url request is "www.mysite.com" but if any one has logged-in using "mysite.com" without a "www" and goes to the page that calls my web service, The HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name gives null. How can I resolve this problem?
