Download Of Large Files Slow When Content-length Specified (IIS7)?
Feb 4, 2010
I have an asp.net web page to serve large file downloads to users.
The page is hosted on IIS7, Windows Server 2008.
The strange thing is that users can download at good speeds (2MB/s) when I don't add a content-length response header but as soon as I add this header, download speed drops to somewhere around 35kbps/s.
This is the code:
[code]...
Of course I can leave the content-length out but the user will not know how big the file is and how long the download will take...which is annoying.

We'd like to restrict the maximum upload file size in our web site. We've already set the appropriate limits in our web.config. The problem we're encountering is if a really large file (1 GB, for example) is uploaded, the entire file is uploaded before a server-side error is generated, and the type of the error is different whether the file is huge or not. Is there a way to detect the size of a pending file upload before the actual upload takes place?
Here's my relevant web.config settings that restrict requests to 16 MB:
[Code]....
Update:
I know that client-side technologies like Flash can detect file sizes before upload, but we need a server-side workaround because we're wanting to target platforms that have no Flash/Java/ActiveX/Silverlight support. I believe that IIS or ASP.NET has a bug that's allowing large files to be uploaded despite the limits, so I've filed a bug here.
Would an ISAPI extension give me more control over request processing than HTTP modules and handlers, such as allowing me to abort an upload if the Content-Length header is seen to be larger than the allowed limit?
Update 2:
Sigh. Microsoft has closed the bug I filed as a duplicate but has provided no additional information. Hopefully they didn't just drop the ball on this.

When we include Javascript files in our aspx files. either we write all the Javascript code in the Head section of aspx or we link to an external Javascript file.
So when the clinet makes a call to that page. Does that mean that all the Javascript will be loaded on the client side?
If that is the case then does not that mean that it will slow down the loading of page as all the Javascript has to be loaded on the client machine?

I have a problem with large respones and IIS7, the server runs out of memory. I've written the test code below that works pretty much like my real code... When i start to download the file i can se the memory usage rise until it hits 100% and Firefox complaints about lost connection to server, looks like IIS7 does not release cache or something.. Works in IIS6 by the way

I've recently been given the task of diagnosing and fixing an internally written asp site that is used to transfer large files internally and externally.
The user uploads a file and enters the receivers email address. The receiver can then click on the link which takes them to the retrieval section of the site.
The issue is although we currently have an upload limit of 100MB set within the web.config file "maxRequestLength=102400", when a user uploads a file of more than 60MB although the upload works and the file is copied to the server when the receiver tries to access it the page simply displays "Internet Explorer cannot display this page".
The site works fine for files that are smaller than 60MB so I don't think it's a code issue, but I can't be 100% certain.

I have a simple web site with two pages. One displays a list of files, and the other streams a file when it's clicked in the list. All was fine in production for 6 months, but now I have to move the site to Windows 2008/IIS7. I have it mostly working, but the files don't open properly (in Firefox) because my content-type header is being ignored. On the production site (IIS6) the headers are (using Fiddler):
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Tue, 09 Feb 2010 16:00:51 GMT
Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
X-Powered-By: ASP.NET
X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="myfile__foo.pdf"
Content-Length: 236841
Cache-Control: no-cache, no-store
Pragma: no-cache
Expires: -1
Content-Type: application/octet-stream
but on the test IIS7 server I get:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Cache-Control: private
Content-Length: 236841
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5
X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="myfile__foo.pdf"
Fiddler also reports a protocol violation and says "Content-length mismatch: Response Header claimed 236841 bytes, but server sent 238378 bytes."
My code looks like this:

I've noticed as my website gets bigger and bigger, the time my laptop takes to display my page is much longer then say a new projects with minimal references. I think there are two variables at play that affect ASP.NET warm-up time:
The quantity of external references The time it takes for a worker process to new() up each instance per worker process Additional time for the WCF objects as the ServiceHost may be in an external DLL First, are those the correct variables to take into account when considering ASP.NET startup time? Next, it appears that web.config may dispatch other objects for use with certain filetypes (*.svc, *.aspx, Windows Identity Foundation (WIF), etc. ). This too may cause delays in ASP.NET.
Last, my project is created as a "web project" not a "web site". Not sure if this has an impact. Is my theory full of holes, or is there something I can do to make development on a old laptop any better?

I'm facing a problem in our current running application. There is a table in database which has 67 columns, among these 18 columns are nvarchar(max) datatype and contains 30K records. Problem is now that SELECT * FROM myTable it takes around 3 to 4 seconds. Which is degrading our application's performance.

I've made a small web site (MVC2, VS 2010) with some image gallery functionality. When testing locally the images download very very slowly, as if I had dial up internet connection. For example if I try
http://my_local_website/myimage.jpg it will be slow. However, if I try (via web browser) C:mywebsite_foldermyimage.jpg it will load instantly. Not sure if this is an issue of my local IIS7 or what, but I would like to fix it before going live.

I have a user control that is common to the application. It searchs for lakhs of Items in one go from the db and I set the selected Items in a list in a session to pass on to the pages that use it. Hence making the application a tad slower. The gridview that contains the Items should have sorting, page indexing. What according to u,I should do to enhance the application's performance ?

I have a download button on my website to download an application of mine. It works fine but I noticed people are clicking it repeatedly. The response time is a little slow after you click the button. Not that bad for me but maybe it's worse for some. In the button click sub I have the code to get the file and bring up the download window and I also have code to increment a table for download count and get the IP address of the person who clicked the button. If I just have the code necessary to do the download the download window comes up a little bit quicker. Here's my button click sub :
Code:
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
'
Dim FilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/FolderForDownload/MyApplication.exe")
Dim myfile As New System.IO.FileInfo(FilePath)
If myfile.Exists Then
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + myfile.Name)
[Code] ...
What I've noticed is that when I had Responcse.End() before my code to get the IP address and increment my table and save the IP Address it would skip performing that code so I moved it below the code. It performs the code but I noticed that after you click the button it takes longer before you see the window pop up that asks if you want to Run or Save.
I tried putting the code to get the IP address and increment my table in a separate sub and then call the sub after Response.End() but it still doesn't perform that code unless I call that sub before Response.End().
I'd like to do everything I'm now doing but get the Do you want to Run or Save window to open sooner. I'm getting a number of people downloading my application from overseas and perhaps when it runs the code to identify the IP address it takes longer. I'm not sure but I see people clicking the download button repeatedly. My table records the exact time to the second when they clicked the download button and to take an example, there are 4 consecutive entries with the same IP address and the times are 3:28 PM for all 4 with the seconds being, 13, 15, 16, and 17.
I put a test download page on my website. When I was running in Visual Studio and using a localhost address I was seeing a big difference in how quickly the window opens after you click the download button if there's download code only versus download code with the other code. When I copied the page to my website and accessed the webpage on the internet there didn't seem to be hardly any difference.
Here's a link to the test page on my website if you want to try it out. You don't have to download anything but you can see how quickly the window opens asking if you want to run or save. There are 2 buttons on the page. One says Download Code Only and the other Download Code and Other Code.
[URL] ....
I just tried it out and I saw a big difference in time between the two but earlier I didn't. Sometimes I think the added code runs faster and other times slower.

I have a two-character field for US State. I add a RegularExpressionValidator control to validate the input using
ValidationExpression="[a-zA-Z]{2}"which works to validate the content when something's entered, but it doesn't catch if someone just leaves the textbox blank.
Is there any way to validate within the same regex to catch an empty textbox?

Is there a way of filtering large CSS files for the only required selectors on a page, and creating css files that contain just these selectors?
Case: I have a very large CSS file that I want to filter on a per page basis, so that the file size is cut down and can be cached by mobile devices. I was thinking along the lines of something like a server side dust me selectors tool. The particular project I am working on is using ASP.NET MVC.

Is there a simple way of setting the content-length based on the size of the HTML string? Or should I just leave it blank anyway...would be nice to have the content-length ideally...

In ASP.NET 4.0, I have an IHttpModule that apply a filter on HttpRequest.Filter. As the result, the content stream length is changed, and it breaks WCF with now returns 400 bad request because of the mismatch between the body length and the HTTP headers.

I have a working solution on an IIS6, which I made using this guide: FLV Flash video streaming with ASP.NET 2.0, IIS and HTTP handler
The app is basically a FLV Player, but streaming is essential to it.
Now, one of our customers is running IIS7 and the streaming doesn't work.

We use the MojoPortal to a website and have some problems to upload files that is around 100 MB with the upload module. (Pleas note that this has probably nothing to do with MojoPortal but with the ASP.NET and the IIS)
The MojoPortal is set to use regular file Upload(not Neat Uploader) and to be able to upload big files we have set the following :
<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="2097151" executionTimeout="18000" requestValidationMode="2.0"/>
And :
<compilation debug="false" defaultLanguage="C#" targetFramework="4.0">
The problem is that the upload will cacel after a couple of minuts (Aborted).
Is there any other values that I need to set to make this possible? The MojoPortal itself should not have any settings for this as far as I know so its regular ASP.NET 4.0.
