Visual Studio :: Dynamic Compilation Of Aspx - Files Stopped Working

Sep 29, 2010

I recently ran into some strange problems. Changes to files that are not code-behind (and not gets compiled to a DLL) should not require you to recompile the whole website, and this has never been I problem for me. These should actually get compiled dynamically when you first access the resource, e.g. the first time when browsing an updated aspx-page in the browser.

But yesterday, during development of a website, I noticed that even the smallest changes in html, javascript or anything in the .aspx-files doesn't get reflected when I save and reload the page in my browser. Rebuilding doesn't help either, actually I'll have to do a "Rebuild All" (in Visual Studio 2008) in order to see the changes. This applies to all aspx-files in my project.

I tried with minor changes on files in another web application project on the same server, and there it works as it should. Something must has happened to this particular application, but I cannot figure out what. Do you have any ideas on how to solve this?

Visual Studio :: Breakpoints Stopped Working During Debugging?

Sep 3, 2010

I had the strangest bug yesterday while trying to debug in vs.net 2005....

I had an '05 web application. I clicked the "Run" button to start debugging, and the webpage popped up fine. I could run through the pages fine. Everything seemed fine....UNTIL!

Until I tried to start inserting breakpoints into my code. The application ignored them. In addition, I noticed my little green visual studio "Start Debugging" arrow (which is normally greyed out while in debug mode) was green. It was as if visual studio completely detached itself from my website I was trying to debug.

After playing around with it for a while, I realized I also had a vs.net 2008 solution open as well. My '08 solution wasn't in debug mode or anything, it was just sitting there open. I just happened to close it, not thinking anything of it, and presto! My 2005 debugger started working again!

So basically, I can't debug an '05 solution (or at least a web solution, as that's all I tried) while I also have an '08 solution open.

Make Visual Studio Treat .htm Files Like .aspx Files?

Apr 15, 2010

I've inherited a bunch of code that has server script inside of .htm files.

On IIS, a handler mapping pumps.Htm pages though the asp.net engine.

Unfortunately, visual studio doesn't notice that they should be treated as code.

Is there any way to make VS treat .Htm files as code/aspx files?

Visual Studio :: Not Able To Open Aspx.vb Files In VWD

Mar 28, 2010

I have a problem within a project in Visual Web Developer. The program will not allow me to open the aspx.vb file associated with an aspx file when I choose the "View Code" option. The aspx.vb file exists; however the program is prevented from loading it and seeing it in Solutions Explorer.

The problem may be related to how the entire project is loaded -- loading it as a project vs. as a website. When I load it as a project, I have compilation errors that do not exist otherwise, but can see the aspx.vb files. When it is loaded as a website, I can't open the aspx.vb files as described above.

.net - Editing Aspx/ascx Files Randomly Disabled In Visual Studio 2010?

Aug 10, 2010

I'll be debugging a site in Visual Studio 2010 and editing an *.aspx or *.ascx file, and without warning, it will lock up so that I can't edit it. There's no message or anything, I just can't type or make any changes. The only way to start editing again is to stop debugging, close the editing window, and then find whatever file I was working on and reopen it. It's a huge pain in the you-know-what. My colleagues are experiencing the same thing, so it's apparently not something with my particular setup. What's the explanation, and how can we make it stop?

Note 1: I've reported this to Microsoft here. If you've experienced this as well, please go there and vote up the bug report.

Note 2: This is not VSS-related, at least in my case. We use VisualSVN, which doesn't use file-system-level locking to mark files as checked out.

How To Get Chrome To Stop Caching When Working On An Aspx File In Visual Studio

Jan 4, 2011

I'm currently editing some html/css within a aspx file inside of Visual Studio 2010. I'm using Chrome as my browser. When I make changes inside of Visual Studio and save/ctrl + F5 to run it frequently fails to load the new updated .css file due to pulling old cached versions of the CSS.

I've used visual studio as my primary HTML editor before but when I work with pure html/css files I just save and refresh the file in chrome and it will refresh the updated css 100% of the time. I've only started to experience this problem when working with aspx files and running things via ctrl + f5. Anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this?

Visual Studio :: The Agent Process Was Stopped While The Test Was Running?

Oct 11, 2010

I have a solution that was originally created using VS 2008. I have quite a few unit tests that all passed when ran in VS 2008.

Yesterday I opened this solution in VS 2010 and converted it using the wizard. The solution built just fine, it runs just fine, BUT now all tests that access the db fail. I get the same error on every test (below).

"The runtime has encountered a fatal error. The address of the error was at 0x5b3b5ad7, on thread 0x19a4. The error code is 0xc0000005. This error may be a bug in the CLR or in the unsafe or non-verifiable portions of user code. Common sources of this bug include user marshaling errors for COM-interop or PInvoke, which may corrupt the stack."

In test classes that use ClassInitialize() and ClassCleanup() methods, all the tests fail. All tests fail with the same error, "The agent process was stopped while the test was running." Tests in test classes that do not utilize ClassInitialize() and ClassCleanup() (these tests do not hit the database) all pass.

When this was a VS2008 project all 153 tests passed. No changes have been made to these tests, other than converting the project to a VS2010 project.

I've been playing around with one test class. I commented out the ClassInitialize() and ClassCleanup() methods. I rewrote one test method and mocked everything. I tried running just that one test. I still got the "The agent process was stopped while the test was running" error.

Visual Studio 2010, version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel

Test framework: integrated VS 2010 MS Test

Mocking framework: Not using mocking, I have a db that is destroyed and recreated in MyClassInitialize(), it is populated with known values. Yes, I know I should be using mocking, but this is an older app and it has not been updated with all of the new bells and whistles yet.

DB Framework: NHibernate

Target Framework is 3.5 for all projects in this solution except for the test project.
The target framework is 4.0 for the test project. I tried changing it to 3.5, it will not let me.

"Attempted re-targeting of the project has been canceled. You cannot change the specified .NET framework or profile for a test project."

Is The Publish Option In Visual Studio Considered Pre-compilation For Web Applications

Mar 18, 2011

I'm having trouble understanding when the site is considered "pre-compiled". As I understand what I've read, if I use the Publish or Build Deployment Package options from within Visual Studio then it is pre-compiling, but if I just use something like xcopy, then it is not pre-compiled.

Visual Studio :: Random Compilation - Errors On Constructors Of A Couple Of Classes?

Jul 14, 2010

my solution in VS 2008, consisting of a dozen projects, does not compile because it gives me errors on constructors of a couple of classes, telling me that lacks the constructor that takes one parameter, which lacks the parameterless constructor, and so on.Actually I have all the correct constructors, and other times I compile without problems.I'm not understand why I have these random problems, that it is practically impossible to replicate.

C# - Visual Studio 2008 Compilation Works; Same Project Compiled In 2010 Doesn't?

Feb 1, 2011

Have a project that was created in Visual Studio 2008 and deployed to a 64-bit Windows 2003 server. This application references a 32-bit Interop.ActiveDs.dll. The applications were originally compiled for 'Any CPU', however, explicitly compiling as 'x86' doesn't solve the problem. The project targets the 3.5 framework.

The server is running IIS 6.0 in 64-bit mode. When we deploy the version compiled in Visual Studio 2008, the app runs perfectly fine; all pages show up. In retrospect, this is actually surprising. We migrated the application to Visual Studio 2010 (we did not change the targeted framework) and redeployed. Now we get a BadImageFormatException loading Interop.ActiveDs.dll. Which actually makes more sense than the 2008 version running. To solve the problem, we set Enable32bitAppOnWin64 to true and ran aspnet_regiis.exe -i from the 32-bit folder of the 2.0 framework (as per various instructions on the web). In IIS, web service extensions, there were two versions of ASP.NET 2.0, one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. We prohibited the 64-bit version, restarted IIS, and launched the website.

What we expected: The app to run as 32-bit, load the interop, and display
What we got: "Service Unavailable"All other web pages that were previously working displayed the same message, as did the Visual Studio 2008 version. The support page here describes the problem exactly, but tells us to do exactly what we did to resolve the problem (enable 32-bit mode). We've rolled back to 64-bit mode in IIS and deployed the Visual Studio 2008 version for now, but we really need to figure out how to make this app run and load the interop (there are also 32-bit Oracle DLLs that are referenced)Two questions:Why does the Visual Studio 2008 version work at all??
How do we get the Visual Studio 2010
