I want to convert my website project to web application project. First things I need to add references to new web application project. When I click "Show All Files" from Solution Explore, web application shows References Node. However, Web site project does not show References node. How can I find what references in my web site project?
View 3 RepliesI am trying to create a set of WCF web services for an existing website that uses web site instead of a web application project. I would like to create a DLL that I drop into the Bin folder instead of writing all my code inside the App_Code directory. Ideally, I want to create a project and reference it from the web site, but I am running into a difficult situation.
The DLL will need to reference configuration and other DLLs located inside the bin folder of the website causing a circular reference. How do I get around this issue?
I am trying to create MVC Web application in Visual studio 2008 but cannot find the template in the "New Website/Project" Dialog box. Same in Visual Web Developer Express.
I also tried searching in google for downloading the template but found nothing.
Just as the subject says, my VS'05 installation hangs when trying to create a new website. I even installed a fresh version of VS08 along side '05 and '08 is doing the same.
View 9 RepliesI recently updated my VS2010 website project from .NET 3.5 to 4.0. Everything was working fine in the website project. Today I decided to migrate the website to a web application project as I have learned this is the best way to work in .NET. I split out all my class files into a separate class library and copied all my other content into my new project. Then I updated all the references and web.config.
When I build the class library, everything works great. The problem is happening when I try to build/debug the web application project. It is acting like all the controls are missing and it is also throwing a bunch of compile errors about the public properties I have in my master pages.
Control errors: "The name 'INSERT CONTROL NAME HERE' does not exist in the current context"
Master page errors:'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition....
It is giving these errors for every single control and master page property in my entire solution.I notice when I add a new web.form to this project, it also adds a filename.aspx.designer.cs file in addition to the .aspx and .aspx.cs file. My existing files do not have these extra files since they were created in a different .NET version.
UPDATE: It seems I was missing the step where I need to right click on the new application folder and select "Convert to web application". I just did that and it seems to be a little bit better...
Now it is choking on Literals that are inside single quotes:
<div class='<asp:Literal ID="CssClassLiteral" runat="server"></asp:Literal>'>
It doesn't see this literal when it does the conversion... Is the above valid code or should I implement that functionality another way?
I installed visual studio team eddtion and i can't find web application projects in it . Is it the wrong version for having web application projects or .. ? I installed it full features and i don't know what could be wrong..

this seems to be a problem only on my new PC, not my prior PC or my coworkers PCs. But, as far as I know, I have installed VS2005 the same way, including the VS80-KB915364-X86-ENU.exe and WebApplicationProjectSetup.msi additions.
I have a VS2005 Solution called 'Intranet' made up of several web projects. One of those web projects is also called 'Intranet'. All of the projects should load as Web Application Projects, which they did on my prior PC.
Now, the 'Intranet' project seems to be opening as a Web Site project. The name of the project in the solution now shows as "C:...Intranet" instead of just "Intranet" and is not recognized as being part of the SourceSafe project(no lock icon shows). If I right-click this project, "Build Web Site" is one option.
i have a project which runs fine when I build it and run it. But when I add an web deployment project to the same, it throws out a "server block is not well formed" error in Default.aspx page

I have been asked to do some work on a website. I downloaded all of the files and chose "open website" in Visual Studio. In the picture below you can see the file structure. When I run the project I get some errors such as "could not load type 'AdminSite.Partner.Listing" or "file project/adminmaster.master does not exist'. Now, those files are indeed there. I have noticed that within the Admin folder and the Home folder there are compiled DLLs in the bin folders. Also, there are project files within each of those folders. I've tried opening the project files and the projects only encompass the files within each of the Admin and Home directories respectively. I'm just wondering what the best way is to set up this solution. As I've done so far, by opening it as a web site, why is it not seeing the DLLs in the bin folders when I run it? Do I need to reference them somehow?
View 5 RepliesMy website uses a single project solution. Each web page file consists of C# code along with the markup. I now have to separate the code from each page into code-behind files that must be combined with many different versions of the markup. I assume this means that I will need a solution with a common project of code-behind files that is merged with a project of each version of the markup files in order to create different websites. I need to know how to organize the solution for debugging and building each website and where to place each file.

View 4 RepliesI'm aware of the following two different types of web projects in Visual Studio 2008:Website projectWeb application projectA web application project can reference a signed assembly as long as the web application's assembly is also signed with the same key. However, this doesn't work with the website project because there is no place to sign an assembly. I think this is because the assembly is compiled dynamically on the server?
Anyway, is it possible to get the website project working with this signed assembly? Or will I have to convert this website project into a web application project?Edit:The following situation has required me to ask for clarification in this matter:I have a class library that is being referenced by several other projects in my solution in Visual Studio. One of the projects is a windows application that will be deployed to specific external users. In order to make sure that the application is using the correct assembly and to also prevent others from using the assembly (I am aware of the limitations with respect to its effectiveness), all assemblies have been signed and all the classes in the library are declared as Friend (internal).
The website project doesn't seem to have a way for me to sign its assembly and I get the following message when attempting to use anything from the library: "CLASS is not assessable in this context because it is 'Friend'", which is to be expected.The following attributes are inside the AssemblyInfo.vb file in my class library project:

My Conclusion:Looks like the cleanest way to do this would be to convert the website into a web application but this would require a bit of time to do since our site is pretty fleshed out already and as pointed out in other discussions, can be quite a pain to do. Going forward, I think creating a web application in the first place may have been a better idea and much more flexible for future development.

I'm left maintaining a proprietary codebase from a third-party vendor. The vendor is still sort of around, but support is limp. The site is ASP.NET.I have made some changes but I am having a really hard time getting IIS to compile these changes in. The bin/ directory has what I believe is a precompiled dll for the core classes. I've changed these but it doesn't recompile. I have tried deleting the dll but then the app refuses to build saying that the Global.asax can't inherit the type anymore, so I don't really know how to rebuild with changes.

The original programmer left and I have no access to the original documentation of the site, if any. Nevertheless, I have complete access to the web server and database server.

I'm creating a website in Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use Visual Studio for C# debugging, but it also uses Visual Studio as JavaScript debugger. Is there a way to disable script debugging for Asp.Net website projects? I run my projects by hitting F5 in my Visual Studio. (I've noticed that when I attach the debugger manually, I can specify the type of stuff I would like to debug.) Note: I would like to debug, but not with Visual Studio. The developer toolbar is enough.

in one of my project I have to add System.ServiceModel.Web namespace. I try to add reference in this way:
(1). Right click on references in the project solution explorer
(2). search for System.ServiceModel.Web name space.
But it is not here. How can I add this name space to my project and .net pannel?
Anyone know if I can maintain a VS 2008 (.net 3.5) project by using the VS 2010 IDE ?

I would like the first to depend on the second (pages in the first may contain links to, or possibly post to pages in the second). Furthermore, I would like to be able to launch the first project on a development server (standard debugging procedure for web apps in VS) and have the references to the second project be fully functional.Does anyone know the best way to achieve this?
View 2 RepliesIs there anyway to localise an external assembly reference? Here's my situation:I am working on Project A and it contains assembly references from Project B. Now when I release this Project to my client I don't want to have to include the whole of Project B with it. Is there anyway to force it to copy the dll's from Project B onto Project A and use those references? I can do this manually by copying all dll's to local project and re-referencing but just wanted to know if there is an easier way.
