Web Forms :: .NET Bug In Event Linking Of Second Level Dynamic Controls?

Mar 17, 2011

I'll start by saying that it took me a very long time to find this bug, since it's quite elusive... The Repeater control in the following test case contains two runat="server" DIVs. Each one of them gets a TextBox appened to them through the ItemCreated event of the Repeater. Both of them have AutoPostBack=True, and TextChanged event wired to txt_TextChanged. However, only the TextBox from the first level properly points to the event on the postBack of the page. The second level TextBox also causes the postBack to occur, the its value does not persist in the VIEWSTATE as well as the event does not fire. Here's adirect link to the test case in a .zip file, as well as all the code. The project is built in VS2010 using Framework 4.

Web Forms :: Menu In Top Level Master Page Not Firing MenuItemClick Event?

May 4, 2010

I have a fairly complex web app which has two levels of master page. The top level provides a nav bar constructed from a Menu control across the top of the page. Second level master pages provide menus down the side. It all works well.

On both Menu controls, I need to handle the MenuItemClick event. This works fine on the Menu controls on the second-level master pages. However, the Menu on the top level master does not raise the event at all.

This web site makes extensive use of Ajax and the top-level master page contains the ScriptManager. Before I go to all the work of creating a much simpler test site, why the Menu control is not raising the MenuItemClick event?

Here is the markup for the Menu in the top-level master:

[Code]....

Here is the MenuItemClick event handler:

[Code]....

The logging call in the event handler never gets called. Equivalent code in the Menu on the second-level master does get called.

Web Forms :: Creating Dynamic Controls In ListView's ItemDataBound Event?

Jan 12, 2011

I'm presenting a list of products within a ListView. Each product can have associated "Options" (Size, Colour etc), but may have none. For each product that gets added, I need to render a dropdownlist for each of its options. E.g. A "Colour" dropdown might have "Black", "White", "Red" etc. I need to generate these controls dynamically, as they are defined by the data itself.

So far, so good. The dropdowns are rendered, and everything "looks" good. The trouble is, I can't work out how to actually get it to work. .Net is complaining about "EnableEventValidation", and ViewState won't work as I've added the controls late in the page's life cycle. As these controls are dynamic, I don't know how to pick up the selected values, and persist them on a post back! When the user clicks on the "Add to basket" option for the product, I need to determine which options the user has selected, and add them to the basket.

Am I missing something here? Is there an easier way of achieving this? I kind-of feel like I'm in a "chicken and egg" situation here. I can't create the controls until the data is loaded (in the ItemDataBound event), but that too late for ViewState. Is there a generally accepted best approach for achieving this sort of thing in ASP/Net?

Forms Data Controls :: Dynamic LinkButton Click Event Won't Fire?

Dec 21, 2010

I am working on an ASP.NET web application using .net 4.0 and VS2010.

I have a GridView and I am appending a row at the bottom to allow users to input data for "Adding" a new record.

The ONLY way I have found for this to work is to do this in the RowDataBound event of the grid. I can check to see if it is about to process the footer row then I know I am at the bottom and can insert this new row.

The row I am inserting contains a couple of TextBoxes and a LinkButton for the "Add" link.

If I just drop a LinkButton on my form and hook up the click event and I click the link button then the first thing that fires is the Page_Load event then my click event. However what is happening when I click the link button that was dynamically added to the GridView is the Page_Load event fires but the click event never does.

I have read 1000 threads saying to try to create the controls in the preinit() or some other event. In my case I can't. Or else someone would have to explain how to add the row to the bottom of the databound GridView.

Here is my code: (I removed creating the Textboxes because that is not part of the problem.

Forms Data Controls :: Dynamic GridView RowUpdating Event Handler Will Not Run?

Feb 1, 2010

I'm creating a GridView in code. I can successfully attach handlers for Editing, and CancelEditing. RowUpdating never runs, however. Instead, if the GridView is in a Panel, the Edit handler is called when Update is clicked (and this is the command name I get back on the Update click, too). If the GridView is not in a panel, then the Cancel handler is called when Update is clicked (again, this is the command name I get back from clicking Update). I've searched high and low for a reason why the RowUpdating event is not getting called, and I can't find one. Does anyone out there haveHere is my code (My actual code is much more involved than this, but for testing purposes, I extracted the following code and stuck it in a new project to isolate my problem):

protected void Page_Init(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)

Application Level Event Without Global.asax?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a need to add an application level event (like Application_Start) but not in global.asax. The reason that I can't use global.asax is because this is a web application for which I don't have source code but I want to add some functionality to it. I need to insert an application start code and was wondering it there was anyway to do it. I'm not sure that if I add a class or aspx page to the sie if it will dynamically compile since this is a web application.

Forms Data Controls :: On Dynamic Control The DropDownList SelectedIndexChanged Event Fires Several Times?

Aug 4, 2010

I ask for a date, on OnTextChanged event i bind data with a SqlDataSource to a dropdownlist and also bind data to a repeater passing the dropdownlist SelectedIndex (i use SqlDataSource too and ControlParameter to link the dropdownlist and the repeater) On my repeater during the ItemDataBound event i create dynamic dropdownlist controls, my code is :

[Code]....

[Code]....

On the Page_load event of my page i bind the data & recreate the control :

[Code]....

Everything works fine, datas are bound and SelectedIndexes are restore on every postback.

The probem occurs when user change different dropdownlists, if he choose to change the 1st dropdownlist the event is fire (normal), after if he modifies another dropdownlist the event is fire twice, if he modifies a 3rd time the event is fire 3 time etc...

Forms Data Controls :: GridView Dynamic Footer LinkButton Event Not Fired On Last Page?

Oct 28, 2010

So I have a GridView control with autogenerated column set to true, it also has autogenerated Edit and Delete buttons, sorting and paging, and also I am binding this same gridview to multiple data sources at runtime. All is working well.

Now I am adding a dynamically generated footer row at runtime. This footer row will allow users to add new record regardless which data source it binds to. So it is working as well except there's a small bug I couldn't figure out why. It's when I navigate to the last page of the gridview, if the rows on the last page is less than the page size, for example, I have page size 10 and the rows in last page is 9, then when I click the 'Add' linkbutton, the Add event does not fire, instead, it fill the last page with additional blank rows, that means if the last page has 5 rows, it will fill 5 blank rows below, if it has 9 rows, it will fill 1 blank row below. Then if you click the add again, it will work. If the last page already has 10 rows then, it works just fine.

Below is the code I used to dynamically add footer row:

C# - Setting Class-Level Variable To Use Between Event Handlers?

Mar 17, 2010

I'm having a hard time understanding why the following code doesn't work. I'm sure it's something remedial that I'm missing or not understanding. I currently have a page that asks for user input. If, based on the input and logged in user, I find data from this page already in the database, I need to update the existing records rather than creating new ones, so I set a class-level bool to true. The problem is, when MyNextButton is clicked, PreviouslySubmitted is still false. So, I'm not sure how to make the value of this variable persist.

public partial class MyForm : System.Web.UI.Page
{
private bool PreviouslySubmitted;
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MyButton.Click +=
(o, i) =>
{
q = from a in db.TableA
where (a.SomeField == SomeValue)
select a;
if(q.Any())
{
PreviouslySubmitted = true;
//populate the form's fields with values from database for user to revise
}
}
MyNextButton.Click +=
(o, i) =>
{
//the value of PreviouslySubmitted is false at this point,
//even if I made sure it was set to true the previous postback
if(PreviouslySubmitted)
{
//update database
}
else
{
//insert into database
}
}

AJAX :: Trigger Event Added To Dynamic LinkButton Click Event?

Jun 25, 2010

I have searched around but unable to find a solution that will work. I have a link button that is created dynamically during the page load. It is given an ID (obviously). There is a script manager on the page. I have the controls added to a panel in the updatepanel (updatePanel1). There is a dynamic label that is also created with each link button. I can get a response from the linkbutton click event during a postback on the second time clicking the linkbutton, but I am getting a complete postback instead of the asyncpostback for that control. During the creation of the dynamic linkbuttons, I am also creating a dynamic trigger for each button and adding it to the updatePanel1. The Click event is not firing the method without doing a complete page postback.
