Localized Resources In Database?

Aug 24, 2010

my web application uses a menu for the user navigation, and I need to store the menu in the database. among other properties, each menu item has a text title. But I do not want to store title strings in the database. Instead I want to use resource files to plug in the right language. I am looking for an advice on how to link the database table and the resources together. I mean, what would a store instead of the title in the database? the corresponding resource id? But this seems wrong.

Javascript - Location Of Image Resources?

Feb 24, 2011

I have a plugin that runs off my customer's websites. The plugin is at [URL], and needs to pull in some images. The problem is that the javascript seems to try to pull images from the customer's site, rather than from my own site. Here is the JS:

button.style.cssText = 'position:absolute;top:-20px;right:-20px;background-image:url(/Resource/Button.png);

In the above JS, the retrieval URL is CUSTOMER.com/Resource/Button.png (the site where the plugin runs), rather than my sites mycompany.com/Resource/Button.png.

Note that I cannot use absolute paths, as they become a pain between environments (test/prod) and also because my image retrieval must use http/https based on the client environment (otherwise you can errors if http is used on an https site).

MVC :: How To Use Local Resources With Razor

Feb 19, 2011

It seems that using Local resources is much more complicated when using Razor. I recently converted an MVC 2 app I was working on to MVC 3. The conversion went well but accessing LocalResources doesn't work and I can't get it to work. In MVC 2 I created an App_LocalResources folder in the /Views/Home folder and created an Index.aspx.resx resource file. In the Index View I could access the local resources with

<%: GetLocalResourceObject("FirstName") %>

Simple, out-of-the-box functionality, as it should be. Razor doesn't understand this. It seems that in Razor you have to use @HttpContext.GetLocalResourceObject(<virtual-path>, <resource-name-key>). I've tried everything for virtual-path but nothing seems to work ("~/", "~/Views/Home/App_LocalResources", etc.). I tried to directly access the resource file by providing the complete namespace, like you do with global resources (which works fine in Razor), but then it errors stating that the culture is required. Intellisense allows you to build the reference to the resource property but Razor doesn't understand it.

Of course an alternative could be to simply use the ASPX rendering engine in MVC 3, but I want to use Razor. Does anyone know an out-of-the-box method (not some exotic work-around) for accessing the LocalResources in an MVC 3 app using Razor?

Granting Access To Local Resources?

Apr 13, 2010

I have an ASP.NET web application that runs on a windows server 2003 server. there is a form that reads and writes data to an xml file inside the application's directory.

I always grant the NETWORK SERVICE user full control on my application folder so that it can read and write to the xml file. I put the application on another windows server 2003 server and did the same steps above but i was getting an Access denied exception on the form that reads and writes to the xml.

I did some search and found that if you grant the user ASPNET full control to the directory it would work, I did that and it worked fine. my question is: what is the difference between granting full control permissions to NETWORK SERVICE and ASPNET users ? and what can be the difference between the two servers that caused this issue ?

Localization :: Local Resources Not Working In MVC 3?

Feb 14, 2011

I'm writing a sample project that supports multilanguage. I'm using Resource files for that. I want to use Local Resources.

Here is what I've done.

1. Add 'App_LocalResources' folder in View/Home/ directory.

2. Add 'Index.resx' for the default language and 'Index.en.resx' for my other language.

3. I've made the Access Modifier as 'Public' and Custom Tool from properties to 'PublicResXFileCodeGenerator' and gave identical Custom Tool Namespace to both of that files ('Example')

4. I put an example 'Title' string in both my resource files and accessed it from my 'Index.cshtml' view in Views/Home directory like this:

[Code]....

When I run the application the default language Title from the Index.resx displays like charm, but when I change the language it can't seem to find the other file 'Index.en.resx' and the Title doesn't change.

For the record I tried the same thing with Global Resources, i.e. Create 2 global resource files and get the title of my Index page from them and it's working, i.e. the language changes when I change the cultures.

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Premium, version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel, .Net Framework v 4.0.30319 RTMRel and MVC 3

How To Access Local Resources (file, Printer,scanner) - Attached To Client PC

Jan 24, 2011

My application creates some images at client machine using client side scripting VBScript. I want to store those images in database, so I need some way to bring those images to server without any interaction with users (means I can not use the file upload control).Along with this, application would also like to use the printer attached to client's machine (it could be her network printer), without showing printer dialog.

Basically I need to create some client piece, dll which will handle the scanning, printing and uploading images from client pc to server and web application will interact with this dll.How could I achieve this? I explored a lot on internet. many articles suggest that use activex control, but how in c#?

I am not asking any spoonfeeding. Please show me correct article or small working sample or example, I would figure out the rest.

Localization :: Google Caches Error 404 Page For Localized Website?

May 28, 2010

I have an ASP.Net(2.0) website which I have localized based on user's browser settings. So when a user navigates to my website, I check their browser settings and redirect them.Here's the code which I have in global.asax

protected void Session_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string localeName = ResourceHelper.GetCulture();
string refUrl = HttpContext.Current.Request.Url.ToString();[code]....

My problem is that on google, my 404 error page is being cached and the error page title comes up as the search result.I think because of the way I redirect users, the search crawler gets to the error page instead of the homepage.

Unable To Automatically Step Into Server - Determine A Stopping Location

Jul 11, 2010

I have a VB.NET VS2010 solution with a WinForms project that calls a web site project in the same solution. I can step into this web method: <WebMethod()> Public Function GetStartUpData() As DataSet and other web methods, but not the following method. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that that is the only web method that uses a parameter of Nullable type. The method works, I just can't step into it .If I try, I get the error: Unable to automatically step into server. unable to determine a stopping location

ByVal fromDate As Nullable(Of Date), _
ByVal toDate As Nullable(Of Date), _

Web Forms :: Embedded Swf File With Its External Resources To Content Page?

Mar 8, 2011

Under Visual Studio 2010, I'm developing an asp.net application. I added a folder to my project called Flash. Under Flash folder I added a swf file with its external resources to run.

The folder content:
1- ScrollingImages.swf file to lunch the flash
2- ScrollingImages.xml file that the swf file uses to read images from thumbnails folder
3-thumbnails folder which content images used by swf file. I can embed the swf file to html easily using this code:

[Code]....

But when I use the same code to embed it to asp.net page I will have a problem that the flash will run but I cannot see the images so the swf file unable to locate the xml file and the folder of the images location and they all in the same folder.Here is the code I used in the aspx.net content page.

[Code]....

I also tested it in aspx.net page and I'm getting same result no images appear. I know that the problem is related to who to embed the swf external resources (the xml file and the images folder) to the aspx.net page but I searched a lot and I could solve it.

Forms Data Controls :: GridView Go To Top Of Page When Page Is Changed Using Bottom Pager?

Sep 19, 2010

I have a grid view where the user can change pages at either the top or the bottom of the grid view. I want the view to go back to the top whenever a user changes the page, whether they are changing from the top or the bottom. I've tried using anchors and javascript to achieve this but it does not work. The javascript is executed and the user is taken to the top of the gridview, this can be seen by placing an alert after the javascript to change the view. But the last thing that happens on the page change is that the window is returned to it's previous position (the bottom of the page). Is there any way of doing this?

Forms Data Controls :: After Page Index Changed, Only Rows In First Page Are Accessible?

Jan 7, 2011

I have this function:

[Code]....

I set itemsRead and startRowIndex in ViewState:

[Code]....

This is my PageIndexChanged event:

[Code]....

My purpose is to modified some data only for current page in a gridview. I call this function in page load and GridView_PageIndexChanged events. When it's called in page load event, it works fine. But when it's called in PageIndexChanged event, only the rows on the first page in GridView are looped through. For example, if I click page 5, the rowStartIndex becomes 100 = 5 x 20 (my pagesize). The if condition becomes itemsRead >= 100 andAlso itemsRead < 120. But after itemsRead is increased to 19, the For each gridViewRow loop stops and the if condition is never satisfied.
