i have a user control that has a few inner controls like lables and images that represents a "movie".
from a web page i get a list of movies (List<Movie>) and for each movie in the list i want to generate my user control and add it to a panel.
(i added a movie type data member to the user control)

I don't think I understand fully how ASP.NET does inheritance of controls.I have a user control, ucBase, which has an asp.net label in the ascx file. Code behind references the label and it works fine during run time if the control is not a parent for another user parent.
If I have another user control, ucChild, inheriting from ucBase, the label in ucBase's code is always null. ucChild has no controls in its ascx fileThe server controls (like the label) needs to be declared in the ascx file and not created programmatically.What needs to be done for ucBase to see its own controls when it's a parent user control?
I have an ASP.NET 4.0 application with some simple user controls. The user controls work fine on the design surface (VS.NET 2010), but when they're loaded during application execution, nothing shows up.
Futhermore, the various child controls of the user controls are null when referenced inside the code behind for the user control.
The code behind for the user control executes as expected, but any reference to child controls are null.
It's like ASP.NET is never parsing the ASCX to create the instances of the child controls.
I'm loading a user control programatically like this:

The problem I have is that all the controls in my user controls are null, is there something else I have to do to load the child controls?
i have a base user control (WC1) which inherits from WebUserControl and a child user control (WC2) which inherits from WC1. I added a textBox and a label to WC1 in vs design view not code behind. But all the server controls that i put in WC1 are null and give null pointer exception.I tried to access textBox and label in different events but the all of them are null.
Steps to reproduce the error:
create a web user control called WC1 by add a new item in VS added a textBox and label server control to WC1 in design view of VS and put code behind: var value = txetBox.Text; created another web user control called WC2 by add a new item in VS and change its base class to WC1 in its code behind create a web page by adding a new item in vs and drag WC2 to the design view of the page run the page then you will see the exception for the codebehind in WC1

can web server controls of WC1 be instantiated in this case? or can user control inherit from another user control and web server controls of parent user control be carried to its children without worring the layout?
I am stuck into a problem, i have a user control ProductListing.ascx that contains ListView binded to an object datasource, SelectMethod and SelectCountmethod are provided as well. Everything works fine but the problem started when i add another user control declarativlly Filter.ascx in the productListing.ascx. I want to assign value to a public property MaxPrice in Filter.ascx. I am trying to set this property in the SelectMethod of ObjectDataSource. Usercontrol "Filter.ascx" throws null reference exception when i try to set its MaxPrice Property.
I tried to acced the usercontrol in Databind method of ListView , it is accessible here but viewstate is empty at this point, i saved the value in viewstate in SelectMethod of objectDatasource but i cant access viewstate in ListView Databind. Its empty. Its a simple code and no rewriting to viewstate elsewhere.
Important: My Codebehind files are in a seperate project and .ascx files in seperate project
I' m using a web custom control to upload images and mark them as primary. all the flow is working fine but it fails to mark images as primary in a diffrent category(there are four categories in which we can load a image-,catalog,primary,misc).It works in - category but not in others when I debug it is failing at a condition in grey . If it is not an element of the Datalist item it would not even enter the loop. I' m lost and unable to find the reason.

View 1 Replieshere is my latest bit of insanity. I'm using a formview control. In the insert template, I'm grabbing applicable values from my AD to populate a dropdown list. I select the user I want to insert, enter the other pieces of info required for my request and click Insert. The query responds back stating that the userid is NULL. Basically, the user Selects a row on GV that executes an Insert into a table the GV cell values of the selected row.
The SQL field data type is varchar. If the GV field is Null, the Insert adds the value to the SQL field. How do I keep the @nbsp; from being displayed in the cell of a data control when it is called at a later time? Do I add some more asp to my control parameter? do I add some vb code behind? I've got a detailsview control on a page. The table that it interacts with has a DateTime column in it. This column is nullable, and a lot of the records have null for that value. In the EditItemTemplate I've got a calendar control. When I try to put the DetailsView into edit mode, I get the following error message:

I am convinced that the problem is the null values in the DateTime column of the table. I've done some web searches on this, and some have suggested placing some dummy values into that column, but that seems more like a kludge, rather than a solution. How do I keep nulls in the table, and yet not have that preceeding error come up when a user tries to edit the selected record?
A common problem in repeater controls where you want to display data for update (like a list of user phone numbers that can be updated and submitted back to the database) is where to store the database unique row identifier. So, I created a custom Textbox control that I've added a Data property to. I populate this data property with the unique row id. The problem is that when I post back the list and go through the repeater items the control's data property is null. The custom control looks like this:

I have a custom checkbox with the same data property and it works fine. I actually put in the same repeater with the textbox control and the checkbox control have the row id on postback but the textbox did not. Is there some limitation on the textbox control that might be causing this.

I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?
I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.

On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:

Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.
With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.
What am I doing wrong?

I've got a web site that has a master page and that master page (mpMaster that has a user control ucControl1) which has a sub user control (ucControl2), this user control has a property which accepts a value. Now, I have a page that uses the master page
and on this page I have another user control (ucPageControl), I need to find a way of setting the value in ucControl2 from ucPageControl. Is this possible at all?

I would like to use the gridview paging feature and have built a gridview with a user control. The data source has lots of columns, so to make it easier I want to return a LIST<MyObject> and just pass <Myobject> into the user control rather than all the data elements. Not sure how I access the object of the data source to bind to the control. Assume it would be during ondatarowbound.
Also, my guess is there is a better way to do this than gridview. I'd take either solution that allows me to have easy paging and pass the complete object into the user control

Once i have changed user control into custom controls(Composite Controls,WebControls,Controls) then i can add it into tool box. Underneath the FormView is a GridView that shows all data from the SelectedDate on the calendar control. However, when the date is selected, all the information from the table ( from all dates ) is displayed.
