Web Forms :: What Folder Is The Best Place To Put The Standard Aspx Pages
Sep 8, 2010
I always create a folder "App_Pages" and use it ot put my aspx pages but I see with VS 2010 that it has several default folders created when adding a page. Which one is most applicable. Is it App_LocalResource? I assume that "App_Code" is where custom classes go.

My application has a Parent master page, a child master page and an aspx page( inheriting the child master page)
> Parent master page has two content placeholders ( A and B)
>Child master page uses the content placeholder A and instills two more placeholders ( C and D)
>aspx page can now use C and D naturally
However i would like to know whether the aspx page can place contents inside the placeholder B( which was not used by child master page)

In one of my website I need to prevent direct access to non .aspx pages in a protected folder. Authentication works fine if I am going to [URL] but in one case my users are uploading html pages in that folder and if somebody cut and paste [URL]the page can be seen without the authentication process to be activated.

I need my child pages to be able to set the values of certain properties of the Master page before loading. In other words, how my application builds the Master page for the client depends upon what properties are set by the child pages on the back-end. For example:
public partial class mstrPage : System.Web.UI.MasterPage
{
public int Rows { get; set; }
public int Cols { get; set; }
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
/* Build a .NET two-dimensional-array of divs
that is <Rows> tall and <Cols> wide. */
}
}
In this example, the child page needs to set the values of <Rows> and <Cols> before Page_Load() is invoked for the Master. This is fairly simple to accomplish with inheritance in OOP, but ASP.NET web pages do not "inherit" their master pages in the code-behind. In the given example, what would the code-behind look like for the ASP.NET child page that sets these properties?

I am replacing an existing web application, that all it's requests go through a url:
www.something.com/scripts/xxx.dll?args
I created my own aspx page that handles these requests and it is called:
www.something.com/scripts/xxx.aspx?args
My problem is that there are many existing links, from other website that refer to the xxx.dll?args url.
Can I create my own dll in .net that will receive the xxx.dll?args requests and process them? This isn't a simple redirect, because I also need the args

we've started writing a standard toolkit for our asp.net applications including one standard master page, stylesheet, errorpage, noaccesspage etc. that will be used by all our applications. Is there a way we can add these pages to each individual application from one central location - so if any of these standard pages change, we only have to change them once and not numerous times in our individual projects?? I tried to build these pages into a standard .dll to no avail.

I have added a jquey menu in my master page its working fine for those asp.net pages which are at the same level as master page.
But this menu isn't working at all for all of those page which aur in Editor's and Admin's folder. In these pages menu is displaying as simple html menu and unfortunately no jquery effect is shown on it.
I'm very confused why this menu isn't working for the pages which are in a seprate folder while the master page is added at the root level outside of all these folders.

Page A loads very fast; Page B loads very slowly and does some CPU-intensive things on the web server. I noticed that if someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly - for ALL users. What is the standard practice for making sure this doesn't happen? If multiple users are loading Page B at the same time then Page A is ridiculously slow. Is there an IIS setting, web.config setting, or hardware configuration I could use to make sure that the fast-loading pages aren't bogged down by other pages that need more time to load?

I wrote a test page that does a bunch of busy work in a method called at page load. This process as I have it now takes around 12 seconds.
If I try to load another page while the first long running page is loading, this second page doing nothing except writing out a world, it doesn't load until the first long running page is finished.
Why is this the case? I would think IIS would be able to handle multiple concurrent connections, it seems crazy that one long running page would stop every other page in the application from loading. I must be missing something or not understand how IIS works.
I would think multiple independent requests would be spawned on different threads. Is this only the case if the requests are from different sessions entirely? Are all requests from a single session bound to a single thread?

I am wondering if it's possible to work on Content Place Holder window without seeing master page template?
The second problem i've noticed is that when i try to add a table (1 row, 3 columns) to my content place holder and then try to adjust the width of those columns the whole layout of my page is getting messed up to the point that i have to use ctrl+x to go back to previous stage. The master page was very complicated but i finally got it to work and i don't understand why while i manipulate contentplaceholder the layout of the master page is being affected. (only when adjusting tables)I am new to Visual Studio and was wondering of any known standars in that matter.

My master page has 3 content place holders:
1. left side bar
2. middle content area
3. right side bar
So it looks like:
<div id="left"></div>
<div id="content"></div>
<div id="right"></div>
On a particular view page (.aspx) that inherits the master page, I want to now show #3 (right side bar).
So I don't want the to be rendered at all.

In my asp.net application, user can send/upload aspx files & those files can be accessed by the users later(there need to implement code level security as it would be better to run the application with minimal permission). So now I need to store these files & where is the better place to store in it. Shall I create a folder giving low permission inside the current project? or shall I create separate virtual directory like "www.mydomain.com/files" & place in it. I want to prevent the restarting of application domain also.

We have been building ASP.Net websites for many years. During this time we gathered a lot of knowledge of ASP.Net. We know what to use, a what not. One problem is still, persistently, bugging us. I hope to solve this for once and for all.
We have a fairly large solution with lots of aspx-files. All aspx-files reside in one Web Application Project. This single big WAP needs to be split in multiple smaller projects.
There are a number of ways to accomplish this, but I am still unsure what the best way would be. We use ASP.Net 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010 Premium.
This is our current work-around (which we do not like)

I have my main web site pages in the Root folder. I have several other pages in a subfolder below the Root folder. When I launch a web page that is in the sub folder it does not correctly render the page. For example it loses the gif image that needs to be on every page. Is there something I need to add to the pages in the sub folder or do I need to set the path differently to the master page? Currently it looks like this;
[Code]....
This works for the web pages in the Root folder.

I have an iframe in one of my aspx files which is located in folder1.
I have a line of code in my page iframe1.Attributes.Add("src","filename.aspx");
The filename.aspx file is in folder2, so the above line throws an error..... The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.Requested URL: /folder1/filename.aspxso, its basically looking for the filename.aspx only in folder1, how can I make it point to the other folder. I tried iframe1.Attributes.Add("src","folder2/filename.aspx"), but its of no use.

How do i get the pretty URL with an ASPX pages. I have listed a couple links below and their associated print page url. As you can see it resembles the Class instantiation method of declaring object but is used for a webpage with its extension.
I was wondering if this method can be used or if this is a URL rewrite to mask all the querystrings and sub directories being referenced. I remember doing stuff like this when i was working on a UNIX system using the .htaccess file to mask effective query
string being shown. I believe they called it a Clean URL, i maybe wrong as it has been well over 8 years since i dealt with the Unix .htaccess file and massaging urls with it.
For instance, look at the MSDN site pages:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.servicemodel.actionnotsupportedexception.aspx
Now when you want to print it:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.servicemodel.actionnotsupportedexception(printer).aspx
Now you select the same page but choose a different framework than its birth:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.servicemodel.actionnotsupportedexception(VS.100).aspx
and the print URL:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.servicemodel.actionnotsupportedexception(VS.100,printer).aspx
As you can see they are not visually passing query strings but more like Class parameters. Is this just a simple URL rewrite after the page is loaded so the user doesnt see the query string information?

I am trying to add aspx pages to my website which already has Asp Pages. I made a virtual directory and pointed to existing website where I have placed new Aspx files along with previous Asp files. Now when I try to execute the file. It runs good in first attempt, however, when I click a couple of times of "click me" button browser keeps on processing and does displays my message again.
Code in Default.aspx.vb
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Label1.Text = "Heello how are you?"
Code in Default.aspx
<%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="WebApplication1._Default" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head runat="server">
<title>Untitled Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<div>
</div>
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text=""></asp:Label> <br /><br />
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Click Me" />
</form>
</body>
</html>
I initially ran this code in Visual Studio 2008 and it executed well. Later on i transferred my files along with existing Asp Page? Version configured in IIS for ASp.Net is 2.0.50727 Visual Studio 2008 To clarify further, I would like to know, if I am proceeding in right direction to excute my Aspx pages along with Asp? Secondly, why does my browser keeps on processing if I click the button second or third time ? I am not getting exceptions or errors.. And have no idea of reading logs for the program..
