Build An Infinitely Recursive Listview Control?

Jan 12, 2010

Not sure I'm asking the right question, but it's a start. I have a user control with a ListView and, ideally, I would like to nest this same control inside of the ListView to provide recursion. This would behave somewhat like a TreeView with child nodes. This might be a monumentally bad idea. :) In fact, I feed like MSFT is pointing me in that direction, because when I try this I am told that I can't do it

FindControl Getting Wrong Control In My Recursive Method?

Mar 11, 2011

I use the following method to find a control on an asp.net page recursively:

/// <summary>
/// Searches recursively for a server control with the specified id parameter.
/// </summary>[code]...

I hit a problem because it was returning the wrong control. I tracked the problem down to the standard FindControl method, and fixed it by checking that the id of the control returned did actually match the one requested like this:

foundControl = start.FindControl(id);
if (foundControl != null && foundControl.ID == id)
return foundControl;

My question is why does start.FindControl(id) ever return a control that does not match the id requested?

Forms Data Controls :: How To Push Down Outer ListView From Nested ListView Control

Mar 13, 2011

I have anested ListView control. I also implemented a jQuery to automatically expand the TextBox control inside of the nested ListView Insert Template. The problem is, when the Textbox expand, the outer ListView control is not; therefore, the Textbox control expands underneath the buttons of the outer listView control. How do I expand the outer ListView control as the nested ListView textbox is automatically expand? One great example is in Facebook where if I add a response comment, it'll automatically push any comments below mine down. If nested Listview control is not the best way to do this, what are my options?

Localization :: Recursive Resource String Handling?

Mar 23, 2010

When developing a rather complex web application that has to be localizable, it can be quite a dawnting task to make even the smallest change like changing a name for an abstract object type.To illustrate the problem, let's assume the user can create objects through our web application called a "FooBar". The web application most probably have numerous resource strings making reference to the object type "FooBar", for example, "Click here to create a new FooBar", or "Delete all the selected FooBars".During or even after the development life cycle of the web application, the owners decide that "FooBar" is not an appropriate name, and would like it to be renamed to "Thingamajic". In the web application there are thousands of references to "FooBar". Now one has to find all and replace them.

C# - Prevent GridView Saving Data From Build To Build In Visual Studio?

Apr 1, 2011

I have a question regarding a situation that occurs with GridView, ObjectDataSource in ASP .NET application. The GridView is linked to the ObjectDataSource and both are included within an UpdatePanel letting the GridView to fill in an asynchronous way from a form in the same page so it gets more rows as the user enters the data:

<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
</asp:ScriptManager>
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="Name" HeaderText="Name" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Name" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Periodicty" HeaderText="Periodicty" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="Periodicty" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server"
SelectMethod="GetSessionNames" TypeName="Simulation"></asp:ObjectDataSource>
<asp:Label ID="Label27" runat="server" Text="Label"></asp:Label>
</ContentTemplate>
<Triggers>
<asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="NewWebSessionButton" EventName="Click" />
</Triggers>
</asp:UpdatePanel>

I start the project with Visual Studio 2008, fill the form and it works correctly. Then I stop the execution: rerun again and the data I entered in the previous run is in the GridView. Is like some sort of cache saved the data from the session before. I checked that EnableCaching property is set to false for the ObjectDataSource. If I Rebuild Web Site in Visual Studio (not just Build) then it works corretly leaving the GridView empty. Is this caused just becuase of Visual Studio? Can it be turned off? And will it happen in the final IIS it will run on?

Recursive HTTP Request: How To Prevent A Page From Calling Itself

Mar 10, 2011

I'm looking for a good way to prevent the scenario of the page calling itself repeatedly.

I have a page, that to be rendered needs to make an HTTP request to an RSS feed. If the URL to that RSS feed happens to be the current page, it will fire off a request to itself. The new request would start off another request to the page, which would start another request... This continues until the site grinds to a halt when all available connections are busy in this recursive loop.

A few notes:

The URL to the RSS is entered by the user.

This is a page in a CMS, the URL of the page could be almost anything and could change after the RSS URL is entered.

In this case, the user entered a URL to a remote server that lead to a redirect back to the page.

A few ideas:

I could just deny all requests from the localhost IP before rendering.

Before sending the request, I could track in a common location which requests are active and not even send it if it's already in the middle of another request to the same address.

Maybe add a custom user-agent to the request header and deny the request if that user agent is seen?

Build ASP.net Headered Control?

Feb 14, 2010

Currently I'm working on a extensive form, which I'd like to organise by grouping input fields in groupbox-like panels. These panels have an header, a minimize and pin icon. Also inner controls should be able to perform two-way binding to the FormViews datasource.

I can't find any builtin asp.net control that does the job. What is the best way to accomplish this feature request? Any examples available on this (can't find a decent one)?

Multiple WebResources Output To Html When Using Recursive Server Controls?

Feb 8, 2011

I have created a server control which uses recursion to create a menu. It essentially outputs nested lists with anchors inside them.

Now, this works perfectly, however, since the control is calling itself to render the child menus, it is also rendering multiple identical WebResource.axd javascript file references in .

how to stop this from happening? I just want the one reference in my tag.

Now when I specify either a datetime or date variable I need to format it properly. Thing is, if I use a database other than sql server how can I format the dates properly. ZI want to make my grid as reusable as possible.

If i use date.tryparseExact I need to know the foemat of the date value being passed in. Problem is, I won't always know the exact format.

Build A Control That Work Like An Access Table?

Jan 8, 2010

What is the best way for me to build a control that will kinda work like an Access table in ASP.NET?

That is, I define, say, 3 columns. The user can add/edit/remove rows. It can be one row at a time, that's fine. There are other fields on the form too, not related to this table. When the user is done adding rows of information, then they hit 'submit', and at that point, is when I grab all the data out of the control and save to a database (or xml file or whatever).

I've tried to build something with ListView and/or GridView.

Build A Composite Or Template Control In MVC Or The Equivalent?

May 10, 2010

In our current ASP.Net Webforms application we have several composite/template server controls that only exist for a common look and feel. For example, we have a panel control that has a title, a place for buttons related to the contents of the panel, and of course the contents. How is this best accomplished in MVC? RenderPartial doesn't get done what I need here. Should I still be using the same controls, but just on a view page? These controls don't really do anything on postback, they are only there for a common look and feel.

More Info:

We have a control in Webforms that implements ICompositeControl. We have a few properties on this control like Panel (type Panel), Buttons (again type Panel which would hold buttons) and a property Title of type string. Visually it looks like
