So I have a gridview control and I am binding it's datasource dynamically base on a dropdownlist. The gridview contains autogenerated columns with auto generated edit buttons. The datasource binded to the gridview is IQueryable<T> where T will be different for different datasource.
My detail problem is below:
A GridView binded to datasource dynamically with all autogenerated columns. When user click edit link, it will display value in autogenerated textboxes.
When user click update link, I am able to capture the user entered value in the textboxes in RowUpdating event, then pass those values to Linq update function to update the database. Now, the problem begin when I try to dynamically add validation controls to each editing row. In RowDataBound event, I am checking the editrowindex then adding validation control to gridview cell and pointing to cell.controls[0] which is the textbox control when the row is in edit mode, I am dynamically setting the textbox control id so that the validation control can set controltovalidate property. The validation control works, but the updating function is setting everything on the grid to empty string.
I am check the textbox text value in the loop, which returns "" for all cells except the id column. It was returning the correct value before I add the validation control. I guess since I added the validation control on rowdatabound event, will it rerender it's own autogenerated textbox in edit mode so that the text value of textbox no longer available in rowupdating event?
Is there a better or correct way to get the cell textbox value? I am using ((TextBox)dc.Controls[0]).Text where dc is DataControlFieldCell in rowupdating event.

I'm creating an quiz application which queries the database and extracts the questions and choices. I use dynamically created controls such as a checkbox list and fill the values dynamically. How do I do this? Right now I have these functions:
array_random_init(); this creates a 10 element integer array from 1-20 - extract_question(i): this extracts a question indexed at i in DB, I created the controls and set the appropriate text in this function. - validate_question(i); this is called by button_click and validates the question i according to DB.
I understand I have to recreate the controls in Page_init on postback, but what should it look like? Do I need to add "if IsPostBack" in page_init, or do I create the controls in page_init() and reset their properties in page_load when I use extract_question(i)? Also, I cannot seem to clear the selected boxes on postback, I added page directive "enableviewstate=false" but it doesn't work.

I'd like to know if there is an automated method to add e-mail settings to web.config.
There is already an e-mail set, and it's currently like this:
<system.net>
<mailSettings>
<smtp deliveryMethod="Network">
<network host="0.0.0.0" port="25" userName="whatever@whatever.com.br" password="stackoverflow" />
</smtp>
</mailSettings>
</system.net>
So what I want is:
1 - How do I add a new e-mail in there set by textboxes in the webform ?
2 - How do I differentiate which one I want to gather at the time ? could you give me a simple C# example on how to get the configs in one of the two ?

I'm currently writing a website in VWD2010 Express, which requires me to write a custom membership provider.
I've followed the tutorial here [URL] , which seems relatively straight forward.
I am, however, struggling at the stage where the custom membership provider is included in a site. Now obviously the tutorial writer is using a different version of VS to me, so I've had to adapt it somewhat. Instead of building the class as a dll, and referencing that in a new site, I've started a new site from scratch and added the custom membership provider to the Add_Code file (HDIMembershipProvider.vb). It is now required that I add details of the provider to the web.config file, which seems to be where I am encountering problems.
The tutorial requires me to add:
[Code]....
within the System.Web part of the web.config file. However, upon running the site I get the error:
Could not load type 'HDI.AspNet.Membership.HDIMembershipProvider'.
I realise that how you reference the class must have changed since the tutorial was written, but I can't for the life of me find the format I should be using, and trial&error has turned up nothing so far.

How do I add a web.config to a class library? I'm trying to build a data access component with two classes, one class that represents one thing and the other to perform data operations on that thing. However when I right click the project and click add item, I don't see information for adding a web.config, I just see information for adding an app.config. Maybe I'm doing this wrong? I'd like this component to be available to other asp.net apps that I will build in the future....

I have a brand new VS 2008 website using 3.5 frame. Default page works but if I add a chart or Gridview I get: Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0
in the Web.Config file the <add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=file;timeout=20;dir=c:TempImageFiles];" />
I am hosting on our own fully managed server - why the DataVisualization assembly is not being found. Also I was able to load the Default.aspx page until I tried to add a GridView to it. Now it too generates the assembly error eventhough I deleted it. If I comment out the DataVisualization assembly the default and test pages load - there are no controls on these pages. Ony text. Very confused. This is my first attempt at using VS 2008, I am using the trial version.

A while ago when i started using VS 2005, i found that some assembly entries were automatically added to from web.config
and i was getting annoying errors. later i found i have added unneccessary references in my application. And its a feature that assembly reference are automatically added to assembly tag in Web.config, So dev don't have to worry about it.
Recently i used Interop.OWC11.dll in my application. And ^&*# got the annoying
"CS0234: The type or namespace name 'Office' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft' (are you missing an assembly reference?)"
error again.. Assembly entry was not added automatically. I checked same for existing references in my application, for them to automatic entries is not happening.... ? :(
I have to write is down in Web.config manually... I don't understand why?....

We (out IT partner really) recently changed some DNS for a web farmed site we have so that the two production server have round-robin DNS switching between the two. Prior to this switch we didn't really have problems with WebResource.axd files. Since the switch, when we hit the live public URL, we get an error:
CryptographicException
Padding is invalid and cannot be removed.
When we hit the specific servers themselves, they load fine. I've researched the issue and it seems since they're sharing assets between two servers, we need to have a consistent machineKey in the web.config for each server so they can encrypt and decrypt consistently between the two. My questions are:
Can I generate a machineKey via a tool on the server, or do I need to write code to do this?
Do I just need to add the machineKey to the web.config on each server or do you think I'll need to do anything else to make the two server work together? (Both web.config's currently do not have a machineKey)

I have the following in my web.config
<connectionStrings>
<add name="ActiveDirectoryConnection" connectionString="LDAP://ActiveDirectoryDomain1.com" providerName="System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider"/>
</connectionStrings>
I need to add a dropdown box to my login page that allows the user to change the connectionString to a different string, e.g. "LDAP://ActiveDirectoryDomain2.com"
In C# code behind how do change the connectionString value?
More info:
The problem I am having is that there are 4 other web.config settings call that one connectionString. For example:
<activeDirectorySecurityContextSettings connectionStringName="ActiveDirectoryConnection" defaultADUserName="ReportUser" defaultADPassword="password"/>

Is there a way to use a generated file as a configSource for a web.config section?
In web.config, I tried a simple:
<webParts configSource="webpartsConfig.aspx" />
where webpartsConfig.aspx just spits out XML when accessed normally, but not as a configSource. (The literal source code is included as-is, giving an error.)
Motivation for this solution: I have different configuration variables locally and online, and I don't want to juggle multiple config files.

Is there a way I can dynamically register an IHttpHandler in C# code, instead of having to manually add it to the system.web/httpHandlers section in the web.config.
This may sound crazy, but I have good reason for doing this. I'm building a WidgetLibrary that a website owner can use just by dropping a .dll file into their bin directory, and want to support this with minimal configuration to the web.config.

The basic idea is we have a test enviroment which mimics Production so customErrors="RemoteOnly". We just built a test harness that runs against the Test enviroment and detects breaks. We would like it to be able to pull back the detailed error. But we don't want to turn customErrors="On" because then it doesn't mimic Production.
I've looked around and thought a lot, and everything I've come up with isn't possible. Am I wrong about any of these points?
We can't turn customErrors on at runtime because when you call configuration.Save() - it writes the web.config to disk and now it's Off for every request.We can't symlink the files into a new top level directory with it's own web.config because we're on windows and subversion on windows doesn't do symlinks.
We can't use URL-Mapping to make an empty folder dir2 with its own web.config and make the files in dir1 appear to be in dir2 - the web.config doesn't apply. We can't copy all the aspx files into dir2 with it's own web.config because none of the links would be consistent and it's a horrible hacky solution.
We can't change customErrors in web.config based on hostname (e.g. add another dns entry to the test server) because it's not possible/supported. We can't do any virtual directory shenanigans to make it work.
If I'm not, is there a way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? Turn on customErrors site-wide under certain circumstances (dns name or even a querystring value)?

I need to store an escaped html string in a key in web.config using the KeyValueConfigurationElement.Save method built into framework 3.5. But when I try to do so,it keeps escaping my ampersands.
Code looks like this:
strHTML = DecodeFTBInput(FTB1.Text)
FTB1.Text is a string of HTML, like this: <b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>
DecodeFTPInput uses the String.Replace() method to change < and > to < and >, and " to ".
Given the above string and function, let's say strHTML now contains the following:
<b><font color="#000000">Testing</font></b>
Of course I can manually edit web.config to store the correct value, but I need the authenticated admin user to be able to change the html themselves.
The problem is that when I try to save this string into its key in web.config, it escapes all ampersands
as & which ruins the string.
How can I get around this?
