C# - Creating A Generic Data Editing User Control?
Feb 11, 2010
I have a user control which has a Gridview and a listview, I want to make this control generic so that I can just pass the type of the class I want to edit, which would be a linq entity, and then it would automatically do the rest, so far I havent had any success and I was wondering if anybody knows a tutorial or some info about doing this?

In Asp.net Web forms why must a user control be partial? I tried to remove the partial keyword and it says: Missing partial modifier on declaration of type 'test'; another partial declaration of this type exists
Where is the other declaration?I am trying to pass a generic type with the user control how can I do that? I can't unless I change the other declaration too. I couldn't find it so I removed the partial keyword.Note:
you do have 3 files if your making WebApplication but if your making website you only get 2 files?
UserControl.ascx
UserControl.ascx.cs
so in website where is the other declaration?the reason i want generic is because im making a Grid User Control so i want to pass the type the datasource is going to have.

Is there a generic control that can be added to all aspx pages that checks for silverlight plugin and the version.. I know there is javascript and the silverlighthost object tag that accomplishes this. Is there an existing ascx control that wraps this functionality ? I need to be able to set the path to the xap on each page (via a property on the ascx control).

set;
}

I am trying to create a generic list of objects using reflection. The below code throws an error Cannot create an instance of an interface. . I could change the IList to List and it works fine, but I was wondering if there is way to get this working with an IList.
var name = typeof (IList<T>).AssemblyQualifiedName;
Type type = Type.GetType(name);
var list = Activator.CreateInstance(type);

I have this code:
Code:
Dim obj1 As New TreeNode
obj1.Value = 1
obj1.Text = "Level" & obj1.Value
Dim obj2 As New TreeNode
obj2.Value = 2
obj2.Text = "Level" & obj2.Value
[Code]...
Can I somehow create a function that creates the nodes instead of I need to make Dim ... each time? If I have 300 nodes this is not a good solution.
I have tried something like this but it doesn't work:
Code:
Function CreateObj(ByVal no As Integer, ByVal name As String, ByVal obj As TreeNode) As TreeNode
obj.Text = "Level" & no
obj.Value = no
treeview1.Nodes.Add(obj)
Return obj
End Function

I finally got membership and roles setup and seems to be working. I have setup a page to allow the creation of a user and editing of roles for a user. I would like to setup a page with a gridview that displays all users and what roles they are assigned. I remember running across someone else that was looking to do the same thing, but cant find it. Not sure if it was in this forum or online somewhere else.
But i found that i can use the aspnet_Membership_GetAllUsers procedure in my db to get all the users, but how can i add the roles to each person and possibly setup the gridview so that each role they have, is displayed on their row in the gridview So i would like to see something like this maybe more data displayed depending on the client request.
Username Email Last Login Roles
meofcourse me@hi.com 08/25/2010 X Admins X Approvers
themofcourse them@hi.com 05/25/2009 X Approvers
The X indicating a checkbox.. and have it setup so they can uncheck the role, that triggers the update and causes the list to refresh and display the new current roles for the individual users. The procedure listed about does not return the roles, so wasnt sure if i could use that procedure and union it with another to get the combined results im looking for.

I have a user control which contains a number of child controls. I want to be able to change the layout of the control (i.e. change the markup surrounding the child controls) via a property of the user control, but I don't want to have to duplicate the child controls themselves. This precludes using, say, a MultiView with different versions of the layout in each view, since in that case I'd have to duplicate the controls. I'd also rather use markup than emit the code for the control directly (as you'd do in a server control).
To give a contrived example, say I have a label and a textbox. In one layout, I want the label and textbox to be contained by divs and laid out on top of each other. In an alternate layout, I want them to be contained side by side in a table.
Should I just go ahead and duplicate the controls between each view? It seems like a violation of the DRY principle, but I'm not sure if I have much choice. A partial solution would be making the views of a multiview into naming containers so that I could at least save myself the time of having to prefix the duplicate control IDs with something to make them unique.

If I have a the following model
[Code]....
And the following generic control template writer (which would have to be extended appropriately)
[Code]....
I would like to be able to add an attribute either builtin or something I create, such as
[Code]....
The generic template writer would then automatically create a Select box instead of a textbox for this item, and populate it with the list I have passed.
There may need to be another property set to have it write option boxes or radio buttons.
The question has two parts: (1) Is this an appropriate metaphor? and (2) Can you point me to an example that does this or to an appropriate metaphor.
What I want is a generic control writer that looks at the type of the object, writes the appropriate html, and a way to pass in external data for things like lists and enums.

I want to create a completely new control instead of extending an existing one. I have found a few articles on the net, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. I've created Custom User controls in Win Forms before and thought it would be somewhat the same in ASP.NET, but it does not seem so. Many articles talk about a Web Control Library template which doesn't seem to be available when creating a New Project, but is available when adding a New item to an existing ASP.NET forms project in VS2008.
I have extended control by using the ASP.NET Server Control template. But all you get with is a .cs file. How do design a brand new control with that?What I want is to create a control from scratch, with postback functionality, and that compiles to a DLL. Am I going about this all wrong? Should I rather be looking at the ASP.NET Server Control Project Template? If so, How do I create a brand new control with the ASP.NET Server Control?I'm working with VS2008 SP1, .net 3.5, and C#.

What is the easiest way to save form data and retrieve it when the user navigates back to the page?
We have an application process that consists of several web forms. If the user clicks to go back a step we would like to auto-populate the fields. I am assuming there is a common generic way to do this without having to mess with individual controls - what is it?

i have following issue: I am creating a new user register form manually without CreateUserWizard control, and all works perfectly unitil I intentionaly (for test purposes) enter existing username (for example BLABLABLA) into username.textbox. After that i get my error message as expected that says "username BLABLABLA allready exist", now when I tray (as a future user who could be in the same situation) to correct the username and enter another one (for example TRATRATRA), it still gives me this error "username BLABLABLA allready exist!" This is the second day that I'm traying to solve this!

I have a custom page (Page 1) in SharePoint where I have a repeater control. From Page1 I open Page2. This is where I generate a collection of object which i use to bind repeater control in Page1. For the first time everythings work fine. If I have 5 objects to bind, repeater control shows 5 elements.
Now assume, I have 5 elements in page 1. When I open page two It carried over same 5 elements. I delete 1 element and send 4 element as collection to Page 1. In page 1 after I databind the repeater control, it doesn't display correctly. It deletes the wrong element.
I debug my code. The collection which i am binding to repeater shows the correct elements. But while displaying i is not showing correctly.

What s the best way to implement a method that creates and assings ID s to user on a asp.net application?
I was thinking about using DateTime ticks and thread id
I wanna make sure that there is no collision and user ids are unique.
ID can be a string or long.
should i use MD5 on some information that i collect from user? what would that be?
I have seen that md5 collision rate is very low.

Basically I have a CreateUserWizard control in my update panel. It will create the user and hit the complete step. How can I get the CreateUserWizard Control to restart without causing a post-back? I've tried setting the continuationurl to the same page, but that causes a post back. I've tried not using a continuationurl and the continue button does not do anything.
EDIT:I've altered the continue_button control even to set the index back to the first step, but then a previous button appears and all the data is retained in the text fields. I can obviously remove the text in the same event, but I don't know what to do with the previous button
