C# - Getting The Session Inside An .Net ScriptMethod
Mar 9, 2010
I have a list of objects which I store in the session. This list then appears on a web page with little "X"s next to each item. When one of them is clicked I use Javascript to remove the item from the list on the page and then I send an AJAX call to the server to remove the item from the list in the session also. Here's where things get a little tricky. I'm using a ScriptMethod that looks like this (C#):
[System.Web.Services.WebMethod, System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptMethod]
public static void removeListItem(string itemNumber)

I want to store an instance of my SignedInMember class inside the Session object but when I go to retrieve it inside a ViewUserControl, it doesn't work. It works if I retrieve it inside the View but not inside a control, can someone tell my why and how to get the result I want?

I am having with asp.net app inside of SharePoint (as page viewer).
When the Default page is loaded, it works fine. However, when I try to go to next page, i am getting a null reference exception. It looks like my session variables are becoming null on the next page (even though I set them on the previous page). Here are a couple things that I tried to diagnose the problem.
I try on the couple other computers; some work fine, some still don'ts. In the property of the page viewer inside of the SharePoint, after I click on the "Test link", it started to work fine until the session expired (on the computer didn't work initially).
I am not sure if there are settings that I need to check on the browser or the app server.

If I create an ASP.NET Web Application project and then add an ASP.NET MVC 2 to it using the default routes defined like so
routes.MapRoute(
"Default", // Route name
"{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters
new { action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }
);
The Session object is NULL when I try and access it in the action methods of the controllers. If I change my routes to this.
routes.MapRoute(
"Default", // Route name
"{controller}.aspx/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters
new { action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }
);
Everything works just fine. For whatever reason having the .aspx extension allows for session to be used, but the later doesn't. I'm using .NET 3.5 for everything.

I use asp.net (webforms flavour) for the server coding. Let's say that I stored a variable called "test" inside the Session object.Is there a way to grab its content inside the javascript js file (I use Jquery). Currently, I use the following workaround - in my aspx.cs file I populate a hidden field, then in Jquery I grab the contents of that field.What is the proper way to do that?I tried to expose the session through a web method and using $ajax function to get the value on the Jquery side, but I am getting security error - "permission denied" - no additional explanation offered.My workaround works fine, but to me it seems rather clunky. What are the common ways to achieve session access in Jquery?

I have to pass the session value to a business logic layer, I can pass it to the function from presentation layer but how can I access it directly in my business logic layer ? Also is it a good approach to pass it directly to business logic layer like
GetMyRecords(Count,Session["userID"].toString()); ?

I've got a button inside the gridview that isn't firing the onCommand, ONLY when I uncomment some seemingly unrelated code having to do with session in the page load.
Markup:
[Code]....
Code Behind:
[Code]....
Now here is the odd thing. If I comment out the If Not Session block in the page_load....it works and deleteUser will fire upon a button click. If I leave it uncommented as now.....it won't work.
The weird part is when I step through the code in debug, upon clicking the remove button, it still registers that as being clicked and runs page_load, etc again. But won't run deleteUser.

There is one master page in my application. Left side it display menu and right side there is a Iframe where page will be displayed when user click on menu. so entire page will not be refreshed only Iframe will be refreshed.
Everything is working fine for me but I am facing problem when session expire, my loginUrl page display inside Iframe so user is able to see left menu.
I am thinkin that LoginPage should be display in main screen instead of Iframe.
My web.config is as below.
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx" defaultUrl="Default.aspx" protection="All"></forms>
</authentication>

I have a multiview inside an updatepanel. in one of the views, I save a value in a session object like this:
Session["xyz"] = "some string value";
Then I switch to another view and try to pick it up the value in a button's OnClick event:
string x = Session["xyz"].ToString();
But I get a null reference error. Debugging it shows that Session["xyz"] is indeed null, yet other Session variables are still there. Is there something special about Session and AJAX?

I am not sure what the event is called but I'm trying to get it so if your not logged in you can't manually type the page name in the bar at the top. I need to find a way so it will always redirect you to the login page if you haven't signed in.
Also the same goes for sessions, at the moment when my session time runs out my website fails as there is alot linked to sessions from my database, how do I get it so when a session expires upon trying to navigate inside the website you are passed back to the login page?

I have many controls like dropdown, radiobuttonlist, etc on my page and I put all these controls inside the update panel so that the page doesn't look to be posting back when something is selected. Now the working on the page is very smooth. But the session object isn't getting refreshed even if I postback to the server and as a result even if the users are working on the page they are being sent to the login screen after 20 mins.
Is there anyway where I could put all the controls in update panel and still refresh the session after any postback(dropdown selection)

I added the following code to global.asax to load up several session variable when a session starts. I'm assuming that when a page goes to use the variable that I should be
1) checking at the page level that the value is valid not 0 when its not expected to be 0, not a zero-length string when its expected to have a length
2) have code at the page level that sets the values if the values have not been set as when the Session timeout, ideally putting the code in a class derived from Page and then deriving all of my pages from the new class so that the code does not have to be repeated in every page
[Code]....

I have a class called EditMapUtilities. Here are some class properties that I want to persist:
public class EditMapUtlities
{
public static Boolean isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get { return SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad; }
set { SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad = value; }
}
// REST OF CLASS NOT GERMAIN TO DISCUSSION AND OMITTED
}
Here is my SessionHandler Class following the pattern from this post Static Session Class and Multiple Users:
using System.Web.SessionState;
public static class SessionHandler
{
private static HttpSessionState currentSession
{
get
{
if (HttpContext.Current.Session == null)
throw new Exception("Session is not available in the current context.");
else
return HttpContext.Current.Session;
}
}
//A boolean type session variable
private static string _isInitialEditMapPageLoad = "EditMapInitialPageLoad";
public static bool isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get
{
if (currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] == null)
return true;
else
return (Boolean)currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad];
}
set
{
currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] = value;
}
}
}
I am still learning OOAD. I want to keep relevant properties with relevant classes. I also want to keep all Session stored variables in one place for ease of maintenance and to encapsulate the session keys and calls. I feel like my design is too coupled though. How can I make it more loosely coupled? Is my editMapUtilities class too tightly coupled to the SessionHandler class? How would you do it better?

Let suppose, I am building an asp.net website which has login scenario in it. I want to provide a certain functionality to the website that if the user is already login on computer 1 and now try to login on computer 2, so he will be allowed to remain login on computer 2, while automatically logout him from computer 1. I also know that http is a stateless medium, so whenever user interact with computer 1 and try to interact with the page, it will get noticed at that time.

Is there room for issue in the following code in terms of multiple users of the same web application? I mean, I know that a purely static string will be shared across all sessions for a single ASP.NET application, but since this explicitly refers to the Current.Session, even though it is static it seems like it would always refer to the session instance of the "current user." But an error is happening that could be explained by everyone sharing the current value of Mode and thus the most recent change overwriting everyone else's mode value. (As a background: This string is in a Helpers class that is used throughout the application. I do not want to make references to Session["Mode"] throughout the application and do not want to have to pass Session["Mode"] in every method call from an aspx.cs page.)
public static string Mode
{
get
{
var value = HttpContext.Current.Session["Mode"];
return (value ?? string.Empty).ToString();
}
set
{
HttpContext.Current.Session["Mode"] = value;
}
}

I use some session variables to get the job done(shopping cart, etc) but it is not stable..manytimes I get no items in session object and other times(refreshing the page) I get missing data...I downloaded the entire site code to my local pc and debugged it and run it succesfully without any session data missing...When I run it in the server, I get bad session again: no products in shopping cart or products with missing quantities...
The same website runs smoothly in our production server too....The problem is with our development server...

I have some code in my page load event where I just want to fire once when the user opens the Browser. The only issue is if you open a new tab with the same website the session variable does not reset. Is there a way to reset the session variable when you open a new tab or do you have to take the whole web browser down for it to clear the session variable.
