C# - Handling Dynamic Number Of Columns?
May 26, 2010
I'm developing a CMS of sorts, and I want to give my users the possibility of customizing the display. More precisely, I want to give them the ability to choose to display or hide the left column, the right column and/or the top div. The middle column cannot be hidden since this is where the actual content will show, whereas the other columns are for navigation or side menus.
I've been looking for a way to make this as smart and flexible as possible. For now I'm using a MasterPage, but that seems to be too constraining. For instance, with MasterPage you need to add a ContentPlaceHolder control in every of your ASPX pages.
What are the best practices in this area? I guess a simpler way of saying this would be "I want to create a template system over which I have complete control".

I created a gridview that is made up of 4 gridviews and using a stored procedure to populate it. I create columns at runtime because the number of columns changes all the time.To make the grids editable I am adding template fields at runtime as I create the columns, this is to ensure that a user is able to edit the cells and some foot values update. Reason why I have four grids is to freeze rows and columns like in excel using javascript. The problem is that performance is very bad especially in IE, the grids take a long time to load. I am not sure if this is caused by the data load or the creation of text boxes. see some of the code below for my _aspx page:

I wanted to gather some methods on how to add a variable number of fields to my form (with Add New and Remove buttons). I know that ASP.NET MVC has easy methods, but I'm unable to find any easy methods for WebForms.
Here's what I've used so far:
Adding a new UserControl to a PlaceHolder on PostBack (I've had to fiddle with ViewState to make this work correctly, huge pain) Adding a new row to a grid and having a template field in a grid (works decently but kind of awkward) Actually having several fields on the form by default and hiding/showing them dynamically (fairly easy but you have a set number of fields.)

I'm adding a handler to the "click" event of the imageButton however when the button is clicked the handler routine is not called. where I am going wrong with this? should I be handling the click event in some other way?
here is my code:

SelectedIndexChanged event for that list box.I have errors in doing this... Here's the code I tried out... I think there are errors due to my lack of knowledge in postback

I have the usual problem of dynamically created usercontrols not hitting the event handler for a linkbutton inside the control, but I've checked the usual problems and I can't work out what's wrong. I'm calling a function to create the controls at the bottom of my page.load (although I did try page.init as well just in case) outside of my page.ispostback check, and I'm setting the controls id's to a fixed name which is consistent across postbacks. Any ideas what's wrong?

I have a user control which I am dynamically loading in my page_load event via a method (see below). The user control contains a gridview and a label. A key piece of information has to do with how to get around the convenient feature of gridviews not rendering when their datasource is empty. In my user control I add some hidden rows so that the grids will render and the user can see just the headers (if the situation calls for it).
The nomControl is an asp:Panel on the parent page which will hold the user controls. The dsRefinedProductsNomInfo is a strongly typed dataset.
[code]....
how I should be handling my events so that my rendered grid is up to date and not showing these hidden rows. I have a feeling I am just doing things in the wrong place/order but this is my first real swim in the deep end of the asp.net pool.

I am not sure how to do this. I have part of it working and I think I understand why it isn't working, I just not sure what I have to do to fix it... I am dynamically placing some data into an ASP:Table from a DataSet. This is all done from the Page_Loud event. I am looping through the dataset by going through the rows no problem to display the data in cells added by rows to the asp:table.
What I am also doing though is adding a button for each row that is to run an Access insert query that adds a record in a log table.I have used the following code to get this to work which it does, most of this is called through functions in the Page_loud event. this is the gist of it:
this is in a loop of the DataSet
for (int i = 0; i < dsResult.Tables[0].Rows.Count - 1; i++)
{
Button btn = new Button();
btn.Text = strDynamicText;
intTID = dsResult.Tables[0].Rows[i].ItemArray[5].ToString();
[Code]....
Here is the problem I am having. The button does display for each row, and the query does execute and run when I press the button. The values being passed in intTID and intUserGroup (are global), are suppose to be different for each row though, and are to insert a unique table ID, and a different group depending on what is in the dataset. Problem is, it is only assigning the last tableID from the result set into the button and will always pass that same ID no matter what button is pressed. This is the same with the intUserGroup. It needs to dynamically have differnent table IDs passed but that's not happening. What do I have to do differently to make sure that when the button is created dynamically it will pass the unique values for each row?

I created a customDropdown usercontrol with Events and It worked fine.
Now I stored the path of the ascx file in the database table and i want to Load the ascx file and handle the Events dynamically in an aspx page.
To Load the usercontrol and access the public properties and method, I need to know the object i am trying to load, right?
For Example
FeaturedDDL c = (FeaturedDDL)Page.LoadControl("~/FeaturedDDL.ascx").
But I dont want to hardcode objectType "FeaturedDDL", coz i dont have that stored in my Database field.
Since I am loading the usercontrol by getting the path and name of the usercontrol from the database table,how will I know the ObjectType at that time?
How to accomplish that and also how to handle the events for these type of situation?

I have a page within our site that allows admin users the ability to upload configuration settings into the system instead of submitting 1 at a time.
While testing yesterday, i found that one of the upload pages allowed me to upload a excel file that had alot more columns than expected and when i checked the database, the first few columns that were expected took the values from the file, and everything else was ignored, but wanted to see if there is any way to check the number of columns in the file to make sure it matches the upload logic before accepting it.

I have 65 columns in the grid, if the columns are reduced to 20 then the speed when accessing from client is more or less similar to that accessing from web browser. Does it mean that all this performance issue is due to the data only ???

One of the reports I am creating has dynamic number of columns - a datatable gets returned from the stored procedure, the number of columns depend on the number of items defined in the database (one column for each item, other than some fixed columns). Is it possible for me to use RDLC report to generate a report in this case? All the calculations are already done int he report, I am looking at RDLC only for the sake of export to excel/pdf and repeating header/footer.

I am trying to add row in DataTable CartDT using row[], which is a string array.
DataTable CartDT = new DataTable();
public void DataTableColumn()
{
CartDT.Columns.Add("Product_Name", typeof(string));
CartDT.Columns.Add("Product_ID", typeof(string));
CartDT.Columns.Add("ItemQTY", typeof(string));
CartDT.Columns.Add("Price", typeof(string));
CartDT.Columns.Add("TotalPrice", typeof(string));
[CODE]..
Now when I execute it, it gives the error that "Input array is longer than the number of columns in this table" The array row[] has exactly 5 elements in it & also DataTable CartDT has also 5 columns. Now i am not able to find exactly where i am wrong.

Im using LinqDataSource like that:
<asp:LinqDataSource ID="LinqDataSource3" runat="server" OnSelecting="LinqDataSource3_OnSelecting">
</asp:LinqDataSource>
And I have ASPxGridView
<dxwgv:ASPxGridView ID="ASPxGridView2" ClientInstanceName="ASPxGridView2Client"
runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="LinqDataSource3">
</dxwgv:ASPxGridView>
In this way Im able to add columns dynamically while handling onSelecting event:
protected void LinqDataSource3_OnSelecting(object sender, LinqDataSourceSelectEventArgs e)
{
MyModelDataContext context = new MyModelDataContext();
ASPxGridView grid = ASPxPageControl1.TabPages[3].FindControl("ASPxGridView2") as ASPxGridView;
if(grid.Columns.Count == 0){
GridViewDataTextColumn txtColumn1 = new GridViewDataTextColumn();
GridViewDataTextColumn txtColumn2 = new GridViewDataTextColumn();
txtColumn1.FieldName = "UserId";
txtColumn2.FieldName = "FirstName";
grid.Columns.Add(txtColumn1);
grid.Columns.Add(txtColumn2);
}
e.Result = from u in context.Users select new { UserId = u.UserId, FirstName = u.FirstName };
}
It is all made simply to test cause my idea is to have solution that makes it possible to use inqDataSource as a datasource for de ASPxGridView but join 2 or 3 tables and show results in this grid.
What I want to ask is if its good solution or is there any other better way to present some views made from couple of tables by join?
Second question is that I have Users and Group and I would like to have one table in which I would have two columns Name and Type For groups type would by group and for users type would be user. I dont have such a table in my database Is it possible to create specific class. Create List of objects of that class and fill it using linq query and the use it as linq data source for that grid ?
clas would be:
pseudocode:
Class MyClass {
string Type;
string Name;
}
or is there any other way to create such a table ?

I have the following stored procedure and if I execute this on our SQL analyser it returns the record no problem what so ever. BUT if I execute this through ASP.NET (I am using EntitySpace objects) to generate this query into data table and it saying that: "Cursorfetch: The number of variables declared in the INTO list must match that of selected columns."
I've discussed this with EntitySpace team and they said it's query issue? We are stuck with this issue and any guidance or hints that will be good.
The environment that we use:
.NET 4
EntitySpace 2010
SQL Server 2005 Database
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[rpt_CPRRespondListReport]
(
@SurveyID INT
)
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;

I finally got the DynamicLibrary issue nailed down I asked about in another post. The basic gist is that there's a project table that renders to a View. The user can, at runtime, choose the columns to display and the order in which they should be displayed. Here's the method that does the work:
[Code]....
This works great. The SerializeToCsv() method is an extension method I created for generic string lists. I used the jQuery UI bundle to create a sortable set of 'ul li' elements with checkboxes in them, which allows users to select which columns to show, and in what order. When the post happens, the current order the elements are in on the View is the order in which they're added to the FormCollection, so I don't need to do anything special to track ordering. So far, all is working according to my evil plans.
The problem I have now is how to render this in the View dynamically at runtime. It's very easy to check for the Model's property values and display them selectively, but not to reorder them. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few ways to do this, but none of them are very attractive. The first idea is to send the Model in as a collection of objects. The query that returns the data as shown above already has the columns returned in the order the user chose, so I could wrap them in objects and render them as string representations in the View. This is clunky, ugly, and won't give me the support for the actual data types boxed in the objects. I'd have to convert them all to strings in the service class and then wrap them in objects, because the View wouldn't know if it was dealing with a DateTime, string, int or whatever. I REALLY don't want to take this route. Can anyone give me some advice on a better way to reorder and selectively display columns at runtime?
