C# - How To Correctly Debug Web Application On Local IIS 7.5 With VS 2010 Beta2
Feb 20, 2010
I'm sort of new to developing Asp.net webapplication projects while running them on a local IIS. Till now I used the 'Use Visual Studio Development Server' option.
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.
Edit: less complex sample code
Following code sample:
List<string> _list = new List<string>();
_list.Add("asd");
_list.Add("asd2");
_list.Add("asd3");
Now I want to debug / step through some line of codes with _list. While using 'Use Visual Studio Development Server' I can see the contents of _list in the quick watch. If I select 'Use Local IIS Web server' and debug through the same piece of code, the quickwatch tries to display me the same values by showing me a spinning wheel for about 10 seconds with a resulting 'Function evalutation disabeld because a previous function evalution timed out. You must continue execution to reenable function evalution' message.
Afterwards I get a windows error dialog with 'Unhandeld win32 exception occured in w3wp.exe [844] The Just-In Time debugger was launched without necessary security permission..'
I do run Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 as Administrator. I start debugging by pressing F5. It seems that I can't really debug this way. Do I somehow have to attach the VS debuggerto the IIS process? If yes, how to do so?
What am I doing wrong, and how to solve it?
And by the way, is that erroneous behaviour new in VS 2010? I've never expierencied that in VS 2008.

While developing I've seen a couple different ways to get local resources values from the resx files. Which one is considered the best practice?
Using the GetGlobalResourceObject method:
<a id="myLink" href="#"><%= GetGlobalResourceObject("Filter","Diary")%></a>
Or using a control and setting the value directly in the resx.

I've installed VS 2010 on my machine. I also have VS 2008 installed.Problem I'm facing is - I'm not able to debug the web services hosted on local IIS. Also, VS 2010 do not show message that source code is different.To start debugging I'm attaching aspnet_wp.exe process. My breakpoint is in a method which is part of a Class Library project which is targeting to .NET v3.5.

I am developing a website in ASP.NET. I wanted to know how can I give a static path to my website on my local mahcine such that it will always be deployed on port number. For eg: in php, the path can always be http://localhost/websitename
but in ASP.NET, whenever, I debug the website for testing, it is always deployed to a new port number. This prevents me from testing my script which can only be given a static name in Greasemonkey.

Basically what I am trying to do is have my webpage project folder located directly on my local machine (ex. Local #1). Our database is located on a server (ex. Server #1) . I am building my web applications on my local machine and then trying to debug them in Visual Studio 2008. Only every single time I click to debug my project I get a "Security Exception" error that looks something like the following...
"Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.
Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed."
I'm somewhat leaning towards the fact that I need to connect to the database to pull information from it and I don't have the proper permissions is the reason why this is happening but I've also read that it can be something that deals with improper configuration of my Web.Config file (i.e. I do not have something enabled).
Note #1: A co-worker of mine is having the same problem if he tries to put the project locally and then debug it. He has full administrative access to the DB and everything else.

I need to read a file on a server into a textbox. I did a test on my local PC, to make sure it works the same in a web app as it does on a desktop app.
The data appears to read just fine, but it doesn't display properly. The test file in the screenshot below, shows how the data should be displayed. When using a desktop app, the data displays just like this.
But on the web app, I get this:
Although the TextBox appears to be MultiLine, it only displays the data in the middle of the box and as one line. Am I missing something?

My published site's pages appear to be unformatted, i.e. incorrect font type and sizes as well as objects that are not correctly aligned and of incorrect width when browsing the site with IE10. On my development platform, Windows 7 Professional using Visual Studio 2010 Professional, running in debug mode and also using IE10 the entire site appears perfectly formatted.
I've already confirmed that all CSS files and the relevant connection strings area correct and ensured that the font being used is installed on the hosting platform.I just used my MacBook and browsed the published web site using IE 9, Chrome and Safari - the site displayed and functioned 100%. I repeated the same test using Safari on iOS and again had perfect results. It thus appears that the problem relates to IE10.

This is weird: When I try to debug ASP.NET web application, Visual Studio 2010 gives me this message "Script debugging of your application is disabled in Internet Explorer", but in my IE 7 (Internet Options --> Advanced), both "Disable Script Debugging" checkboxes are not checked.
what happens to my Visual Studio 2010?

When I am actively developing it is extremely cumbersome to write some code, fire up the debugger to test said code, wait a minute for the debugger to start, look at the page in the browser, stop the debugger, edit the code, rinse, lather, repeat. I can get around that by using CTRL-F5 and CTRL-SHIFT-B during development but I lose all the benefits of the debugger. Is there a better way to use the debugger, or something else I can do to get quick rebuilds and use of the debugger? I/we do write unit tests, but you also need to test your app in the browser so please no "you shouldn't have this problem if your unit tests were written properly"

I am having a hardtime script debugging in VS2010 and IE8. I am using .net 4 framework.When i try to make a break point in my client script in VS2010, i get the respond "This is not a valid location for a breakpoint". Then I have tried to use IE8 Developebar, but when i try starting the script debugger it throws an alert, and tell's me that it couldent attatch to the process, because there may be another debugger attatched to the process.

I've run into a particularly nasty bug where an ASP.NET website attempts to make a call to a WCF service method that sends IIS into a death spiral...that ultimately brings down the associated app pool. It never gets to our log4net code that outputs unhandled exceptions.I was watching w3wp.exe processes spin up and die, so I figured I'd take a dump file on termination using ProcDump from SysInternals using the following command

I am using Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET 4.0 to build a WebForms project that uses the new routing features in System.Web.Routing. When I build my solution and run it from within VS.NET's debugging environment only routes with RouteUrl's that include a ".aspx" extension are being properly routed to the PhysicalFile. It appears requests made to other URLs are not being "detected" by the routing engine for processing. In the case below, "Scenario1" shows a 404 and "Scenario2" works properly.
Here is the relevant code in my global.asax:

I'm building a site using the .NET 4 framework using routing and MasterPages.
Because I'm using both routing and MasterPages, I can't see any way how to get value from control on the previous page. To solve this I've used the code behind to store the control's value in a session variable. Is there a way to retrieve a value from a control using PreviousPage or something when using Routing and MasterPages?
This works fine in VWD debug mode and in IIS 5.1, but when I try to deploy it on my Windows Server 2008 (IIS7.5) machine, it get this error:
Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the <configuration><system.web><httpModules> section in the application configuration.
Here is a copy of my web.config file:

I am trying to debug a project, suddenly I'm running into an issue where enumerating any object collections results in a timeout if I try to view it.If I run the program normally I have no issues. If I try to view any collection, such as a list, I get a timeout error and the whole thing bombs out.I thought something might be going on with one of my more complex collections so I tried creating just a normal list of strings as follows...
List<string> blah = new List<string>{"fsdf","fsdg","Gt","gsersg","ser","gersgxdrsd"};
