C# - Automatically Exposing Database Tables Through Web Services?

May 25, 2010

Is there any framework or tool to generate web services (WCF) access to all the non transactional tables in my database? something like asp.net dynamic data but with web services, I need to do this for homologation with other systems.

I have a class with about 5-10 methods which all my services (WCF) need to expose. What is the best way to expose all the methods in all the services keeping (DRY principle) in mind?Is interface inheritence a good design principle? e.g. public interface IBMW : ICar

{
blah();
blah();

Creating/Exposing WCF Services From An Existing Application?

Feb 24, 2011

We need to expose some services (i.e. AddressValidatorService, CustomerFinderService) that currently reside in an ASP.NET application to other applications within our organization. Exposing these services via WCF seems like a natural fit, but I don't see any best-practices for how to pull these common services into a WCF wrapper in such a way that my existing ASP.NET application can continue to use them with minimal code changes and/or awareness that the service they are consuming is no longer in-process. I'm especially looking for recommendations on how to structure the existing ASP.NET solution and whether to host our new WCF in the same solution or in some new shared WCF solution referenced by both our ASP.NET application and external callers.Also, is it bad practice to simply promote the DTOs currently only consumed in-process via ASP.NET to full fledged data contracts or is it preferable to create duplicate DTOs that are explicitly decorated with [DataContract]?

C# - Creating And Exposing Web Service In MVC 2

Feb 20, 2011

I've looked around for some tutorials, but everything I see is how to use REST services with my app. But that's not really what I need, I'm not doing basic GET requests, the end user needs to do some complicated calculations with several classes and variables from my web service.

In a Web Forms app, I would just add a Web Services solution and do everything in there. Is that the recommended solution for an MVC app?

C# - Exposing Some Live Data On A Website

May 7, 2010

I have a large .NET based system running within the company intranet, which allows winforms users to see some live calculated numbers and a custom winforms control drawn live (but not real-time). The Forms users can also affect the operation of the system.

I would like to just show the live numbers on a website, along with the custom control. Nothing needs to come back from the web user, as the web app is meant to be just for monitoring. All the numbers can be calculated at the server. It's been a long time since I touched ASP.NET, and I need to know how to proceed. What are the steps in building and deploying such a website? Any caveats I need to look out for?

.net - Silverlight RIA Services With Different Database Providers?

Jan 31, 2011

I want to create a Rich Internet Application in Silverlight. One of the requirements is that the back-end of the application should work with different database providers (SQLServer, PostgreSQL, Oracle). I'm planning to use Entity Data Model to represent database objects and Domain Services to expose these objects to the client.The problem is that I don't have a clue if the same data model can be used with different database providers and how sophisticated that would be to change the provider without recreating all the model.I want the application to be reusable on different environments, so that i can import the same database schema to any existing database, change the provider in the ASP.NET web application and that's it.Is it doable? Or maybe there are other ways to achieve similar functionality?

Configure Database.mdf For .net Applicatoin Services And Then Delete NETDB.MDF?

Oct 25, 2010

my web site i have two databases, ASPNETDB.MDF and a self created one (database.mdf). (The don't contain a lot of data yet)But i need a relationship (foreign key) between a table in ASPNETDB.MDF and a table in database.mdf.So i guess i need to merge both databases first, would you just extend the "ASPNETDB.MDF" with the tables from "database.mdf" ?or better configure "database.mdf" for the asp.net Applicatoin Services and then delete "ASPNETDB.MDF"

Web Forms :: Custom SiteMap Provider From A Database Over WCF Services?

Mar 21, 2010

I have seen a lot of examples posted on how to create a Custom SiteMap Provider which is directly linked to the Business Logic in the Presentation Layer, however, I would like to write a Custom SiteMap Provider which inherits from StaticSiteMapProvider and
is driven by the database. In addition, I would like to expose all of this logic behind WCF Services.

Are there any samples on how to implement a Custom SiteMap Provider over WCF Services since I am having a hard time trying to figure out exactly how to put a solution following this architectural pattern together.

At current we have about 100 websites that we host, a lot of those are database drive, what i wanted to do is build a script that would let me enter the details for this website into a DB (domain name, ftp username, password, database name, username and password etc) and then download that website / database on a regular basis

I wanted to do this in .net so i could add it into our intranet and add some reporting so when our clients log into the extranet they can see their website has been copied etc

RequiredFieldValidator Automatically Stops Database Being Updated?

Nov 8, 2010

My previous impression of RequiredFieldValidator and similar have been that they show you an error label and set Page.IsValid false and that is it. Meaning they leave the rest of the task (preventing the use of wrong input data) to you. But today I have realised say if you use a DetailsView to insert a new record to a database, and you use validators to check the TextBoxes inside the DetailsView, they automatically prevent the database from being updated.

I would like to know how this is implemented behind the scene. I'm guessing it aborted the Page Lifecycle at Validator.PreRender event, so that database connections at later stage could not be reached? I'm probably wrong. I'm trying to use Reflector to get inside the RequiredFieldValidator to see how it is implemented, but I don't really know where to look.

C# - Update A Grid Control Automatically With Database Changes From Another User?

In my ASP.Net application I have several pages that provide a list of items from the database. Currently we are using an UpdatePanel to refresh the whole list on a certain interval so that changes from other users will be propagated the screen. Obviously this isn't very efficient and we don't think it will scale well.What are some other methods for accomplishing this. Is there a specific pattern for addressing this issue?
