C# - Sync Database To Uploaded File Using Windows Service Or Website Code?
Sep 10, 2010
I have a website that occasionally needs to have a handful of the tables in its database updated. The updates come from another system that exports to comma delimited text files. I can then either FTP the text files to the web server, send them in through an admin upload page, or manually log in to Remote Desktop to download the text files. I have all my C# code written to parse the files, check the database contents, and decide what to do.
Should I code the sync logic to be part of a file upload page, protected in the admin section of the site or should I create a Windows Service that constantly looks for files to process in a particular directory that I can drop files in through FTP?
I have used Windows Services in the past and they have worked great, but if I ever have to make a change to the code it can take longer than it would if I just had to modify an ASPX.
Are their security benefits one way or another?
Performance benefits?
ASPX page wins the "ease of maintenance" category.

We've got an enterprise ASP.NET/VB.NET application that has multiple clients running on different versions (websites) of the product code.
I am trying to make a windows service that runs on our server to execute long running tasks. This service needs to run the correct version of code for each client and I had originally thought about calling a WCF Service that would be deployed as part of the web version.
The problem is that our IIS pools recycle each night and this opens up the possibility of a job getting aborted. A job that went over 24hrs would never get an opportunity to finish.
Our server is running Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0, .NET Framework 3.5, SQL Server 2005.
Is there a way to load assemblies dynamically to use without having to restart the service?
Edit: I ended up using System.AddIn detailed in this step by step example

I have a visual studion 2010 solution with two projects
1 . A class libarary
[Code]....
2. A windows service application
[Code]....
The service application is used to convert .dbf files to xml. The convertion is done using the classlibary project wich is called by the windows service application. This class library project has some values hard coded. like the path to look for the .dbf file
const string sourcePath = @"F:forms";
const string pathToDbfStructure = @"F:formsstructure.dbf";
const string pathToBackupFile = @"F:ackup";
I want to make these hard coded values changable. like moving them to an app.config file. To which project I have to add the app.config file (classlibary or windows service)? How can I use the value from configuration file in classlibrary ?

I have an ASMX Web Service that has its code entirely in a code-behind file, so that the entire contents of the .asmx file is:
<%@ WebService Language="C#" CodeBehind="~/App_Code/AddressValidation.cs" Class="AddressValidation" %>
On my test machine (Windows XP with IIS 5), I set up a virtual directory just for this ASP.NET 2.0 solution and everything works great. All my code is separated nicely and it just works.However, when we deployed this solution to our Windows Server 2003 development environment, we noticed that the code only compiled when all of the code was dropped directly into the .asmx file, meaning that the solution didn't work with code-behind. We can't figure out why this is happening.
One thing that's different about our setup in our development environment is that instead of creating a separate virual directory just for this solution, we dropped it into an existing directory that runs a classic ASP application. So here we have a folder with an ASP.NET 2.0 application within a directory that contains a classic ASP application. Granted, everything in the ASP.NET 2.0 application works if all of the code is within the .asmx file and not in code-behind, but we'd really like to know why it's not recognizing the code-behind files and compiling it correctly.

I've returned again to my problem of trying to connect to the SQL database on my website from a Windows forms application. I had some success but then I was playing around with some things and deleting stuff etc to see what would happen. I deleted the Database that I successfully connected to and added a new database for reasons I won't go into. Now when I try to connect to the new database I don't have success.

I've created a page which dynamically creates an .ics file based on data from our database, that customers can download to add the events to Outlook and iCalendar. This file is sent through the Response, so I don't actually store the file on the server. Since I can provide a webcal:// address to this file, it can also be synced whenever someone changes the settings for an event in our system.
Example .ics: [URL]
However, since our customers sync with a dynamically generated file, this forces our server to generate the file every time their calendar application wants to sync. And since this will cause a couple of hundred thousand requests every hour, the server will take quite a bit of punishment.
So my actual question is: How does Outlook and other calendar applications know when an ics-file has been updated and needs to fetch the updated file? I need to manage this to only generate a new file when there has been an actual update, and not on every single request. The main problem is that we do not wish to store the actual files on the server.

Web service error response (code/message etc) would you store it in a database? or would you keep the error response in a method.By the time I'm done with this, there will be hundreds of error response, maybe in the future, thousands? (I dont know yet, depends how large this web service grows).EDIT: error response is the response returned back to the application via the web service, (not to be confused with error logging).

in my case, It is the windows service which in running the long running insert/update on a table and I need to cancel the operation from my ASP.NET application. In the above link Burnsys suggests that one should kill the Sql server session. Is that really only way and a goood practice to do this? Also, in the same poset can use SqlCommand.Cancel to cancel. However, I am not sure how can I cancel the command from the windows service from ASP.NET application.

I'm trying to enable automatic Window authentication working on our ASP.NET Intranet. I've changed the Authentication on our IIS 7.5 server from Anonymous to Windows Authentication Enabled only, and changed the Web.config file for the website to:
<authentication mode="Windows" />
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
The Windows login box appears when accessing the website via IE 8, I enter valid credentials, but the login window keeps reappearing as if it does not accept my credentials. By repeatedly cancelling the login box it disappears, and my login name can be viewed on the website. Is there any possible reason for the login box to keep popping up even though valid credentials are being entered? I've restarted the servers / cleared browser cache etc. Also, ideally I would like the user to enter the login details once in the login box and not be required to reenter login details whenever he reopens the browser.

I created a Website and i upload it using the asp.net development server.
So on the explorer the address is something like this http://localhost:port
The problem is that i can't access the Website(while its uploaded) using my internal IP from within the network.
So if i type http://10.0.0.180:port i get an error "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage".
I disabled my firewall(windows 7).
