Linq To Sql - Displaying Data From SQL Data Source?
Mar 27, 2010
I'm using LINQ to SQL to grab information from my SQL database. I have a GridView which shows all the top level information - in this case a list of groups (i.e. admin, users and so on). When a user clicks say the admin group, I want to be able to show each member in that group. I have the following code which grabs the information from the database:
[code]....
I know that I can use GridView again to display the results of the query, but this doesn't really look nice as it shows too much information at once. How would I go about having some sort of display which will show just one user at a time, giving me the chance to click next and back?

I'm exploring ASP.net. I have created a FormView based on Linq Data Sources. There are several fields in my datasource that are either future or archaic.
1) Do all fields in the DataSource need to have a control in the FormView?
2) Does ASP.net need to insert/update all fields in the DataSource?

I have a linqdatasource and I want to use an enum for Type as below:
<asp:linqdatasource id="GridDataSource" runat="server" enabledelete="true" Where="Type == @Type">
<whereparameters>
<asp:dynamiccontrolparameter controlid="FilterRepeater" />
<asp:QueryStringParameter QueryStringField="Type" Name="Type" ConvertEmptyStringToNull="false" />
</whereparameters>
</asp:linqdatasource>
It keeps throwing an error:
Operator '==' incompatible with operand types 'ProductType' and 'String' ProductType is my Enum, and String is my input type. I don't seem to be able to convert one to the other.

I don't see a LINQ option when picking a data source for a grid view - I see the other options like SQL etc.
If I go into a page in another folder, I'm able to see this option.
I just upgraded to Visual Web Developer 2010.

I have the following code:
[Code]....
With this code behind:
[Code]....
Initially, I wrote the GetTeamMember() method to display the FullName in the ItemTemplate.
Then as I wrote the EditTemplate, I needed to populate a DropDownList with a list of names (first and last). It was fairly easy using the LinqDataSource, however it currently only shows the LastName. I could write another method GetTeamMembers() to populate the ddlTeamMember with the data I want, but I thought maybe there's a better "LINQ" way.
So I'm looking for a better way to get FullName (i.e. Firstname + " " + LastName) into both lblTeamMember and ddlTeamMember.
Options I thought of are:
I could write a method GetTeamMembers() I write a StoredProc that returns the extra column Better way?

I recently started using SSRS 2010 and I didnt come across this issue in 2005 or 2008 versions of reporting services.
I have a report that drills down to child report1 and then that drills down to child report 2 but clicking a field in the report.
When I click on the link on the first report to go to the second report. I get this error message
"A data source instance has no tbeen supplied for the data source ''reprort2dataset"
I am not sure how to handle this error.
All reports run fine stand alone, but when I try to link them up I get that error.
I have a report viewer running the reports in an aspx page.

I'm new to ASP.net 3.5 and trying to create a test site so I can figure out how to use it in the real world. I have created a FormView (Formview1) based on a Client table using Linq Data Sources. The page includes a DropDownList to lookup Clients. I have added a list option (<asp:ListOption value="" Text="(Select Client)" and set AppendDataBoundItems=true so my added option is displayed. I decided to try to use Formview with only the Edit and Insert Modes, and I have set the Default Mode = Insert. When you open the page, a blank Client record is displayed.
The Client record contains serveral lookup fields and they have drop down lists for each. When I select a client from the Client DropDownList, is get the following message 'ddlClientType' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items I had this problem before and decided the best way to handle this (in the interim) was to turn off foreign key constraints for each of the lookup fields (e.g. ClientType) in SQL Server. That worked for 2-3 days. Now the problem has started again.
When I develop in other applications, I would simply create a lookup data source based on a Union Query with the actual data and a blank record. How can you do this using Linq DataSources. Can you get access and modify the queries?

I've been using the Item Inserted event for my data controls, such as details view. I'm wondering if there are advantages to doing this with the data sources instead of the data control. There is a lot of overlap in the events provided by these two types of controls. Are there advantages to using the events raised by the data source instead of the ones raised by the data control itself. Should I be using the events raised by the data source instead of the control used to enter the data?

I am trying to display a couple of charts of my site. The two charts are here: [URL]. I did a right-click and "view page source", copied the pertinent information into my project and when I run it, I only see a parameter, or outline of where the chart should be. I see pretty much everything EXCEPT for the chart. I've been to other sites and was able to display the chart DJIA chart in my project, but it doesn't update throughout the day. Is there an easy way to set up these kinds of charts, or do you need some kind of direct connection to one of the exchanges or some such thing?

I'm creating a page that allows the user to create a new object that will later be stored in the database. The problem is that the design of ASP.NET data controls seems to insist upon only working with pre-existing data that has been stored in a database (or XML, etc...).
I'm basically trying to get the user to compose a list of items and specify a quantity for each item. I could do this by generating table rows but the rows are lost at each postback. The data view controls seem to be designed only to be bound to a data source but until the list is complete, the data can only be in memory.
What control is appropriate for this and how can I achieve this with that control?

<asp:Label id"AuthorName" Text='<% #Bind("au_fname")%>' runat="server/>
but this field has to be obtained from other table:
<asp:Label id="AuthorTitle" Text='<% #Bind("title")%>' runat="server"/>

I want to add a search engine to my website. I want it to handler boolean searches and give me a list of results in order or best match. I need it to be able to work with LINQ, because I want to add additional where clauses to the final query that gets run. I am looking for the best open source .NET search engine that works with LINQ. I like lucene.net but the problem is the LINQ interface (LINQ to Lucene) hasn't been updated since 2008. Are there any good options out there?

I have gotten as far as joining tables successfully (three of them, no probs) and have placed the data in a "var course_units", which is then passed to the view with the statement:
// Create the view model
var viewModel = new CourseViewMapViewModel()
{
Categories = categories.ToArray(),
NumberOfCategories = (course_units.Distinct()).Count(),
Course_Units = course_units.ToArray(),
Weekly_Hours = weekly_hours.ToArray(),
Total_Hours = total_hours.ToArray(),
};
//Return the view
return View(viewModel);
Each element in the array holds 5 values, namely "National_ID", "SIN" etc. Now the first question: When I display an array element, the coloumn header gets added, which I don't want. How do I get it to not display it? My current ASP.NET looks like this:
<% for (var x = 0; x < t; x++)
{%>
<td>
<table border="0">
<tr>
<td>
<%: Html.Encode(Model.Course_Units.GetValue(x)) %>
</td>
<td>
<%: Html.Encode(Model.Total_Hours.GetValue(x))%>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
<%} %>
The idea being that a <td> will display all of the values in Course_Units, one array element at a time. The current output is: { National_ID = ICAB4225B, SIN = D0057, Unit_Name = AUTOMATE PROCESSES, Acronym = SCR1, Core_or_Elective = Core IV }
Second question: If I wanted to select just the "National_ID", how do I do that? I've been searching the internet for a couple of hours now, no luck, more blame on me being a complete newbie, I think.

I am playing about just now trying to teach myself a little bit about the entity framework. I have a Gridview data bound to a Entity Date Source using the Entity Framework. If I select certain items in that list I then wish to redirect another page and populate another gridview with just the items selected (but with more detail, different includes/navigation properties)
This is probably the most simple thing but I have spent 2 hours banging my head on the wall trying to get this to work. Essentially I have a continue button which when clicked should identify all the UIDs (a column in the gridview) of the rows and allow me to subset to just these rows and pass them to another page to be rebound to another datagrid
