C# - Passing JSON Serialized Data Via Hidden Field?
Mar 2, 2011In ASP.NET WebForms I want to pass arbitrary data from server to client and back again. I am serializing to JSON and have been simply producing JavaScript that creates the object on the client. I have no problem sending data to the server with ajax, but there are situations where I also want to send a Javascript object data back to the server on postbacks. So I guess it needs to be in a hidden field.
1) What is the best way to do this in terms of minimizing complexity and optimizing space and efficiency? In researching this I discovered Protocol Buffers but there does not seem to be a good C# implementation. I did find one, but it was a couple years old and self-described as buggy so that scared me.
2) If I just pass a JSON string, how can I be sure it will be safe to include as the value for a hidden field? Is there any reason I might not want to do this? I could Base64 encode, but it seems like this adds a lot of overhead. What is considered the best or preferred method?

Mar 26, 2010I am trying to pass data from client to server using a hidden field. If I use a button, then OnClientClick sets the value, and OnClick does the postback and all is well.
However, I am responding to a Client event, and although this works I get no postback. How do I now force a postback from my client handler?

Oct 15, 2010I am having troubles making the code run. I have a web page with a gridview and a checkbox. I would like the button when selected to pass the category id. I have managed to get it work without paging. Once the paging kicks in see below, I am unable to run the code. see below.

Forms Data Controls :: 3.5 Gridview - How To Display Data Text Field In Item Template
Aug 16, 2010I have seen several Web Sites that use GridViews that have lookup fields with different Value and Text Fields (as in drop down lists) but I can't seem to figure it out how to display the Text Field in the Item Template when the Text Field is not in the datasource. .
Here's what I have. I have a Gridview whose datasource is a Linq to SQL Invoice table, e.g.
InvoiceID
CustomerID
InvoiceNumber
THe Customer table is related to the Invoice Table thru the CustomerID. The relationship is defined in SQL Server and is displayed in the DBML.
I have created a template field for the CustomerID field in the Gridview. I would like to display the CustomerName when the Item Template is displayed and a DropDownList in the Edit Template. The DropDownList works great, but I cannot seem to figure out how to display the CustomerName in then Item Template.
I seem to remember seeing in some video that you can simply drag the CustomerName into the CustomerID Item Template Field. But I can't seem to find the customerName field. The DataSource includes the Customer Table because of the relationship, but no fields are displayed.
I suspect this is real simple, but I cannot seem to find an article or video that explains how to do this.

Sep 2, 2010I've run into this before, but I was using a formsview and just changed the field to hidden. I am trying to get the value of a cell out of a gridview to a variable and here is the code:

This works perfectly if column 6 is visible, but because it's an id number (which is not the primary key) I do not want it visible, but changing it to visible="false" causes this code to return null. Changing it back to visible and it works.
I'm not sure why the visiblity of a control changes the functionality of it.
Passing Blank Field Value To Stored Procedure C#?
Feb 21, 2011I want to return all rows from a SQL Server 2008 database table into a SQL data source if a textBox field is blank. So I made a stored procedure with an if @date IS NULL clause.
Although the stored procedure seems to be working fine in Visual Studio 2008 the actual webpage displays no results.
I am guessing I have to send a DBNull value to the stored proc if textBox.Text == string.Empty. I tried the SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters.Add but it seems that I get a conversion error from DBNull.Value to string.
Is this the source of my problems or am I missing something else? How would I pass DBNull.Value to a stored proc if a textfield is blank?

Apr 11, 2014I have an old database that still contains depreciated Text fields. I need to pull from these fields and display the results. You would think this should be easy... First my select statement caused a problem:

where CustomerInstructions is a Text field.
The error I get: "The text data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT because it is not comparable." A quick search shows I can cast the text field as a varchar(max).

Now I get an error while trying to load the instructions into a text box: "Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: index"
Not sure what the problem is here. I have text and a text box. What's with the "out of range" crap?

Jun 15, 2010I'm using ASP .NET C# 3.5. I have a multiline textbox on my web form that allows for the input of up to 5,000 characters from the end-user. This text is a basic description of a training course. I need to display it out in a clearly formatted way. For example, I need there to be bullets and bold text.
What I did was I chose certain (not often used) characters and then used the .Replace method when displaying the text in an <asp:Label>. If the text in the database contains the character '~' then I replace that with a line break <br />. If it contains '`' I replace that with <b> and if it contains '^' I replace that with </b>.
Is there a better way of doing this? It is working properly, and I'm displaying the text properly, but I know the end-user is going to hate typing text like this for formatting. I do want this all to stay database driven as well

May 26, 2010I've been searching in all the forums, and websites for the last 4 hours without finding a solution for a problem that in the beginning I tought it was an easy one!!!This is my problem, I have a gridview with the following colums: select (link), Room Type (for hotels), and TotalThe total field Is a template field it has in the custom binding property a function: find_total(Eval("Room")) this function makes some calculation and returns the calculated Total value, and shows in the gridview without problems,The thing I cant do is: when the user clicks on the select link I want to get the text of the template field and put in a label control.
I tried, almost all the events of the datagrid, to reference the content of my template field but sometimes I receive a null value (seems that Im looking for the value before the find_total function has been executed) or I get an error "the index is out of range".I dont know how to approach this, I tought It has to be much easier, but Im very confused right now, if anybody knows how to do this
