UserControl, ViewState And Loosing Property Values?

Mar 29, 2011

this is about ASP.NET, ViewState, UserControls and loosing the values of my properties. It is an classic question by know, I know, and even though I have searched here and on Google for a resolution to this problem, I havent succeeded. On the contrary, the more I test different things, the less I understand it seems.

On top of this I am using ext.net and their so called DirectMethod's but I dont think that has much to do with this problem. There are numerous questions I have and I hope that this text will be fairly readable and understandable =)

The UserControl

I have a UserControl, Customers.ascx, that contains some Properties. The "most" important is *_CustomerId*. The _CustomerId is set in code-behind, in ext.net's "DirectMethod" like this (code below from the Page Customers.aspx):

Custom Server Controls :: Property Not Being Held In ViewState?

Mar 11, 2010

I have the following class:

[Code]....

It was my expectation that by default, the Title property would be stored in ViewState, but this appears not to be the case - the exception in RenderBeginTag keeps getting thrown on postback.

Am I being thick? Do I need to explicitly store properties in ViewState?

Property From A Custom UserControl That Is Saved In Viewstate Loses Its Value?

Jul 28, 2010

I have a custom control in an aspx page that has a property named Size

public int Size
{
get { return Convert.ToInt32(ViewState["CreativeSize"]); }
set { ViewState["CreativeSize"] = value; }
}

This property is set in the aspx page to a value lets say 500 during a postback called by a Button control that is in the page (not in the custom control).

I also have a button inside the custom control that raises a postback like this

protected void btnUpload_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (fuBannerfile.HasFile)
if (fuBannerfile.FileContent.Length / 1024 > this.Size)
;//code here not important
}

When this event is called the "this.Size" property is 0. I also noticed during debugging that during Page_Load of the page, if i access the property like this:

int size = customControlId.Size;

the property is set to 500. But after that when the debugger reaches the event inside the control the property is 0.

State Management :: Failed To Load Viewstate. The Control Tree Into Which Viewstate Is Being Loaded Must Match ?

Oct 9, 2010

Now here is the weird thing. First i am running it locally on the built in vs2008 web server.I load my control in fine, do a postback from a linkbutton, locally on my machine it all works fine, no issue.However when it goes onto my host, it falls over with the message:

Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request.Now i also load controls dynamically and use postbacks and things in the admin area of the site...and that works fine, however my front end just keeps failing? See the code behing below:

State Management :: ViewState - Does The Master Page Have Its Viewstate

Apr 30, 2010

I have been getting this error a lot lately with some of my users, and I had a couple of concerns with view state and I have read so many articles but I am still lost..

1. I use masterpage on all the pages and I need viewstate for some of the pages but..

There is a page where a user will fill out the information and then submit this data to a cgi server, and it is where I get most of the Client Disconnected errors, what would happen if I disable viewstate when they click on that button?

Now when a user browses from one page to another, does the view state from the previous page get deleted? If not how would I delete it?

Does the master page have its own viewstate? Would I be able to make sure none of items on my master page are using the viewstate?

C# - Page With ViewState Disabled Still Be Validating A Viewstate Field?

Sep 24, 2010

I have a shopping cart page (Cart.aspx) that has a button that will (sometimes) post to a third party payment gateway, if payment is necessary. The payment gateway will process the payment and then do a silent post to my website (Order.aspx) so I can update the order status.

Order.aspx always throws an invalid viewstate error, even though viewstate is disabled on the page.

What's happening is that Cart.aspx (which has viewstate enabled) posts to the payment gateway, and the gateway will post it back as part of the silent post. Even though Order.aspx has viewstate disabled and validation disabled, it still tries to validate the __viewstate field it's being given.

I know setting EnableViewState=false will disable the rendering of the __viewstate field, but if another page provides the field, shouldn't it still skip validation? I tried calling ViewState.Clear() on the Page_Init event of Order.aspx, but ViewState is apparently empty. how to get around this? I don't want to disable ViewState on Cart.aspx (in some cases it may be necessary), but I can't figure out how to clear it on Order.aspx.

For some reason the values are always empty strings or 0s in the usercontrol, no matter what the page property is.

Can anyone add a complete input about how to create Parent Property with multiple child properties or in short nested properties.

Example: Style tag: which has properties like font, color, display... etc? which accept objects and its value.

[code]....

As soon as Rainbow property is typed, user should get intellisense for list of number of colors. Then accordingly user can select list of those colors and assign a value to them.

C# - Why Does ReSharper Need To Scan All Files When Converting A Property To An Auto Property

Mar 4, 2011

Is there any difference between accessing a property that has a backing field

private int _id;
public int Id
{
get { return _id; }
set { _id = value; }
}

versus an auto-property?

public int Id { get; set; }

The reason I'm asking is that when letting ReSharper convert a property into an auto property it seems to scan my entire solution, or at least all aspx-files.

I can't see any reason why there should be any difference between the two from outside the class. Is there?

C# - Difference Between Timeout Property Specified In Web.Config And ExpiryDate Property Of FormsAuthenticationTicket?

Jul 3, 2010

In the Web.Config we have a timeout property. Ex:

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="~/Login.aspx" timeout="2880"/>
</authentication>

When loggin in, we can specify a ticket expiry date. Ex:

FormsAuthenticationTicket ticket = new FormsAuthenticationTicket(
1, id.ToString(), DateTime.Now, expiryDate, true,
securityToken, FormsAuthentication.FormsCookiePath);

Why there's two places where I can set expiration info about forms-authentication? What's the difference between them? What has more relevance?

DataSource Controls :: Is It Possible To Use A Property Of An Object Instance Property For Object Data Source

May 3, 2010

Traditionally with an Object Data Source, the wired up class will have its public properties available for binding (i.e. Gridview columns, etc.) which works well. But what if one of my wired up business objects has a property that is an object itself; can I drill down to a property on that object property and still use it?

So in additiona to the traditional:MyBusniessObject.OrderID...I want to use:MyBusniessObject.Customer.NameID
Your 1st response might be to just wire up the 'Customer' class, but I need properties both on 'MyBusinessObject'and 'Customer'. I do not think this can be done, as the ODS will not display properties on an object instance property. I have tried manually typing in the drilled down value as well, but that wasn't a success either.
