When To Use PageAsyncTask (Asynchronous Pages)?

Mar 7, 2010

From my understanding from reading about ASP.NET asynchronous pages, the method which executes when the asynchronous task begins ALWAYS EXECUTES between the prerender and the pre-render Complete events. So because the page's controls' events run between the page's load and prerender events, is it true that whatever the begin task handler (handler for BeginAsync below) produces, it can't be used in the controls' events? So for example, if the handler gets data from a database, the data can't be used in any of the controls' postback events? Would you bind data to a data control after prerender?

PageAsyncTask pat = new PageAsyncTask(BeginAsync, EndAsync, null, null, true);
this.RegisterAsyncTask(pat);

Sending Asynchronous Emails From Web Pages?

Sep 3, 2010

Here is my situation and hopefully someone could guide me in the right direction.I have a shared or static class in my website (App_Code folder) which has static methods to send emails asychronoulsy. So whenever there is an exception in any of my pages or classes I call these methods to send an email to support asynchronously. Now when there is an exception in a page, to route that exception asynchronously I need to have Async = "true" for that page. I have more than 50 pages and I don't want to set Async= "true" on every page as I read that it affects performance.So I was wondering if there is any way I could send emails asynchronously without having to set async = "true" on every page.

Asynchronous Pages In The Framework - Where Are The Other Threads And How Is It Reattached

Apr 4, 2010

IIS has a limited set of worker threads waiting for requests. If one request is a long running operation, it will block that thread. This leads to fewer threads to serve requests. Way to fix this - use asynchronous pages. When a request comes in, the main worker thread is freed and this other thread is created in some other place. The main thread is thus able to serve other requests. When the request completes on this other thread, another thread is picked from the main thread pool and the response is sent back to the client.

1) Where are these other threads located? Is there another thread pool? 2) IF ASP.NET likes creating new threads in this other thread pool(?), why not increase the number of threads in the main worker pool - they are all running on the same machine anyway? I don't see the advantage of moving that request to this other thread pool. Memory/CPU should be the same right?3) If the main thread hands off a request to this other thread, why does the request not get disconnected? It magically hands off the request to another worker thread somewhere else and when the long running process completes, it picks a thread from the main worker pool and sends response to the client. I am amazed...but how does that work?

PageAsyncTask EndHandler To Update The Calling Page

Jul 30, 2010

I've been coerced into applying Microsoft's PageAsyncTask objects, which I am new to (before I've always used jQuery AJAX calls). I've got everything working just right except once the work is done and the endHandler is called, how do I have the calling page update its contents?Basically my async function runs a slew of database operations and reports back to the caller with HTML regarding the results of the database run. I'd like to display these results on the calling page once the operation has completed. I have everything working except the calling page displaying the results.

How to make a call to my WCF service asynchronous?

Here is how I am doing it

Dim wcfService = New EmailBlastService.EmailBlastServiceClient

But when I actually do the call it seems to tie up the server for about a minute (even though I know the async process takes longer than that and is still processing the request). Even if I try to hit the page in a different browser it still takes a minute to load.

Basically I just want to make the WCF call and forget about it, I don't want users to be waiting while I am doing some heavy processing and calling an external

Asynchronous - How To Update The UI During An Event

Jan 17, 2011

I've got a user control with a couple of buttons. Think of them as 'On' and 'Off'. When either button is clicked an async method is called. If the method is successful an event is fired. Within the event I want to update the enabled property of the two buttons so that only a single button is clickable at any one time. The problem is that any changes I make to the properties are not shown on screen because the postback is already complete. I tried wrapping the buttons in an UpdatePanel but I get an "Update method can only be called on UpdatePanel with ID 'xxxx' before Render' error. I understand why the problem occurs but I can't think of a solution.

Ideally what I'd like to do is simply call a method within the event that will update the UI, but I don't know if that's possible.

EDIT

Here's some example code. I can't post the exact code, but this explains the problem:

Configuration :: Finding Best Practice For Making Sure That Slow Pages Don't Affect Other Pages?

Aug 31, 2010

Page B - loads slowly and needs to do some CPU-intensive operations on the web server.

I noticed that when someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly. This is even worse if multiple users are loading Page B at the same time. Page A won't finish loading until Page B is done.

Is there a best practice for making sure that Page A can still load quickly? Maybe a config setting or IIS setting that I need to change from its default? With 2 users loading Page B at the same time, the web server CPU usage only gets to 30% so I suspect it might be something I can tweak with the settings.

State Management :: Maintain Query String Parameter In All Pages - It Gets Lost In Subsequent Pages

Aug 9, 2010

In my Application_BeginRequest I have code that gets query string value ?c=FR or ?c=US and store it in cookies.Based on query string value I have either US or FR,locale is selected from locale table.If ?c=FR then locale will be fr-FR and if it is US then locale will be en-US.My code is below.

void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
LocalizationInfo loc = GetLocalizationInfo();
if (Request.Cookies["Localization"] == null)
Response.Cookies.Add(new HttpCookie("Localization"));
Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] = loc.Country;
CultureInfo objCI = new CultureInfo(loc.Locale);
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = objCI;
Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = objCI;
}
public static LocalizationInfo GetLocalizationInfo()
{
string countryCode = "";
string sLocale = "";
if (HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"] != null)
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies["Localization"]["Country"];
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"]))
countryCode = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["c"];
if (countryCode == "")
countryCode = "US";
sLocale = HertzRent2Buy.DataProvider.ListData.GetLocale(countryCode);
LocalizationInfo ret = new LocalizationInfo();
ret.Country = countryCode;
ret.Locale = sLocale;
return ret;
}
public struct LocalizationInfo
{
public string Country;
public string Locale;
}

Now when I run the project and in query string I set [URL] then for the very first page(home page itself) it shows me French translation,but on subsequent page,that query string parameter ?c=FR is lost and hence it shows be English translation not French translation since it does not pickup French resx file.If I manually append ?c=FR in subsequent page then it shows the French translation.Is there is way how I can make that query stringparameter available in all pages.Structure is there to hold Country and locale variables. In all pages I am calling GetLocalizationInfo() method as follow

LocalizationInfo info = some.DataProvider.Globalization.GetLocalizationInfo();

And I create instance info to pass locale and country as parameter. GetProductDetails(id,info.Country,info.locale). why my query string parameters get lost on subsequent pages.

Caching - How To Turn Pages Into Static Pages As Part Of The Build

Dec 29, 2010

I have a few pages that are completely static. They only change at build time. But they are expensive to create. For the ones that are kind of expensive to create, I cache them for very long times using the ASP.NET output caching. But for one page, I really want it cached forever and ever or until the the next build.

What is the most expedient way to make this happen? Is there a build in feature that achieves this or a 3rd party tool?

(yeah, for the moment I plan to do the "view source" and copy paste thing, which isn't a very elegant build step)

How To Make A Bulk Transaction Entirely Asynchronous

Aug 13, 2010

i'm dealing with an ASP.NET 4.0 Web Forms Application in which the DAL is built with a combination of LINQ-SQL and classic ADO.NET (for auditing transactions, and bulk updates).

I have an admin page on the site which performs an update on a bunch of records (could be thousands), and not to mention there is T-SQL triggers in place on those records. Needless to say, its a killer of an update.

So of course, the page is timing out. The update transaction is performing with the following code:

db.ExecuteCommand("UPDATE [tblFoo] SET [IsFoo] = 0 WHERE [Bar] = {0}", bar.Id);

So it's a classic ADO.NET bulk update.

What i've tried to do is make the call to this method asynchronous, by firing off a thread on the button click on the form:

[code]...

The method OnMyAsyncMethod simply executes the above ADO.NET call.

This solved the UI problem, being the page now posts back and refreshes immediately. But then around 30 seconds lateri see that wonderful little flashing light on my Visual Studio toolbar - "an unhandled exception has occured, would you like to attach to process, etc".

So of course, now the actual call in the DAL is timing out.

Am i doing this wrong - is there a way i can perform the update transaction (db.ExecuteCommand) totally asynchrously?

Hopefully you see what im trying to do - i just need to fire off a killer of a T-SQL transaction. The only thing i need back from the call is the number of rows updated.

Using Asynchronous HttpHandler To Retrieve Images?

Dec 20, 2010

I have an application that uses an asynchronous HttpHandler to retrieve images and display them on a page by having the asp:Image tag's ImageUrl property set to the handler's URL and some additional querystring arguments. Getting the images is a somewhat complicated process (it applies autocorrections to images based on pre-defined settings). Is an asynchronous handler the right choice for this?

Invoke Asynchronous Method Call From .NET?

Jul 20, 2010

I'm currently working on a web site which involves a data upload process. The file is currently uploaded to the server method is called (in app_code) where ultimately a DTS package is called (via a web method) to load the data into a database and perform some validation on it.The client has specified that they don't want to have to wait for the DTS package to execute (execution time is less than 5 minutes) so it appears that I need to call the method asynchronously. The user will probably logout or close the browser window while this task is running so I believe I'm unable to run this on an asp.net thread.
