ADO.NET :: LINQ To SQL Very Slow Website?

Oct 9, 2010

I have created a website with asp.net 3.5 and c# (using linq to sql). its a basically a project managment system. bt its very slow when u look at its loading time. my dashboard takes a whole lot of time to load.when i look at other sites created by my colleagues it loads much faster than my site. they have developed it using ado.net + Stored procedures. that made me believe that linq to sql is slower than ado.net + SP combination.to improve my site perfomance using linq to sql.

C# - Very Slow Web Application Which Use LINQ To SQL?

Jul 17, 2010

I am developing sample web application which use C#, and LINQ to SQL. The application is very very slow and it takes about 2 secs to navigate between pages. I have already used SQL Profiler and monitor the calls to the SQL server. All SQLs looks normal to me and their execution time is always about 1 or 2 millisecs.I tried the same application in another PC and it is the same. So, it is not because of my computer performance.

Web Forms :: Minimize The Masterpage Loading - Website's Response Is Very Slow

Jun 22, 2010

have a website with MasterPages, on load master page has many database roundtrips and logics implemented.Now, if move to one page to another, the MasterPage get reloaded and all the above mentioned procedures processed again, which again takes a lot of time and as a result my website's response is very slow.For eaxmple, once the default page is loaded, all the child pages can load within the centent area (in ajax style).

tell me some workaround to optimize the site so that it doesn't this procedures repetitively.

Visual Studio :: Debugging A Website Really Slow Since Upgrading To Windows 7?

Jul 16, 2010

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate on my work computer. Before this debugging a website in Visual Web Developer 2008 was really fast - the page loaded up like a normal website would.

Since I've upgraded to Windows 7 the page loads like normal but gets stuck for about 30 seconds at the end of the load - this is slowing me down as I normally need to use the FireBug tool as soon as the page has loaded.

Configuration :: Website Db Selects Runs Extremly Slow On Windows 2003 (IIS6) When No Console User Is Logged In?

May 23, 2010

I have a really weird problem that I've been investigating for at least one week now. I deliver a website hosting both ASP classic and .NET 3.5 content in IIS6 on a Windows 2003 server environment with MySQL db backend. The solution has been installed on several servers (some hosted in WMWare) with no problems. On one specific server, also hosted in WMWare, the user experience great performance issues on the website. The problems are most seen when using database resources and is not limited to either .net or asp classic, but I am still not sure that the problem is only related to database calls.

Following components are involved:

IIS6 .NET FW 3.5 MyODBC 3.51 / 5.1 MySQL 4.x

Code executed on the server using all resources above runs smoothly when the IIS is not involved. The website shows times up to 2 minutes to execute code that takes 2 seconds outside the IIS. The exact same code is executed. Using profiling tools, I've seen that the great loss comes within calls to unmanaged code, for example when System.Data.ODBC namespace to calls into myodbc.dll.

The tricky part is: If at least one console user is logged in to the server, the performace problems are not seen anymore. When the user logs out, the problem appears again.I have tried to reinstall all components above, tried different versions of MyODBC, tried different website authentication methods, tried to run website under administrator privilegies, installed various MS KB's with no success.

Deploy An C# Website With A Linq To Sql Component?

Dec 2, 2010

I have a .NET 3.5 web application that I recently added some Linq to Sql functionality to -- a dbml file, etc. Locally, it works fine.

However, when I try to deploy it, I get a null reference exception, apparently when it's trying to call the constructor for the context object.

To add to the complexity, I use a Web Deployment Project which compiles it into a single DLL. I assumed the Linq to Sql stuff would get compiled along with everything else. However, now I'm thinking that I need to move the dbml file up along with the DLL.

I had the dbml file in the App_Code directory, so I tried recreating that directory structure on the remote server. But .NET will not let me have an App_Code directory on a precompiled application. So I just moved the dbml file into the root directory -- but I still get the error.

Here's the stack trace for the error I'm getting:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
codeCS.SarcStateDataDataContext..ctor() +28
DB_Interface.SarcStateDataDB..ctor() +26
eSARC_Basic..ctor() +56

[code]....

I don't send it a connection string or connection object, because both the local and deployed versions of the program use the same remote database. But could that be the problem? The local application has access to the connection string in the dbml file, but the deployed application doesn't?

Open Source LINQ Search Engine For Website?

Apr 22, 2010

I want to add a search engine to my website. I want it to handler boolean searches and give me a list of results in order or best match. I need it to be able to work with LINQ, because I want to add additional where clauses to the final query that gets run. I am looking for the best open source .NET search engine that works with LINQ. I like lucene.net but the problem is the LINQ interface (LINQ to Lucene) hasn't been updated since 2008. Are there any good options out there?

Avoid Loading A LINQ To SQL Object Twice When Editing It On A Website

Apr 9, 2010

I know you are all tired of this Linq-to-Sql questions, but I'm barely starting to use it (never used an ORM before) and I've already find some "ugly" things. I'm pretty used to ASP.NET Webforms old school developing, but I want to leave that behind and learn the new stuff (I've just started to read a ASP.NET MVC book and a .NET 3.5/4.0 one). So here's is one thing I didn't like and I couldn't find a good alternative to it.

In most examples of editing a LINQ object I've seen the object is loaded (hitting the db) at first to fill the current values on the form page. Then, the user modify some fields and when the "Save" button is clicked, the object is loaded for second time and then updated. Here's a simplified example of ScottGu NerdDinner site.

//
// GET: /Dinners/Edit/5
[Authorize]
public ActionResult Edit(int id) {
Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id);
return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner));
}
//
// POST: /Dinners/Edit/5
[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post), Authorize]
public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection collection) {
Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id);
UpdateModel(dinner);
dinnerRepository.Save();
return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id=dinner.DinnerID });
}

As you can see the dinner object is loaded two times for every modification. Unless I'm missing something about LINQ to SQL caching the last queried objects or something like that I don't like getting it twice when it should be retrieved only one time, modified and then comitted back to the database. So again, am I really missing something? Or is it really hitting the database twice (in the example above it won't harm, but there could be cases that getting an object or set of objects could be heavy stuff).

Performance - Application Slow But CPU Is At 40% Max?

Nov 19, 2010

I have a strange situation on a production server. Connection for asp.net get queued but the CPU is only at 40%. Also the database runs fine at 30% CPU.

Some more history as requested in the comments:

In the peak hours the sites gets around 20,000 visitors an hour.
The site is an asp.net webforms application with a lot of AJAX/POSTs
The site uses a lot of User generated content
We measure the performance of the site with a testpage which does hit the database and the webservices used by the site. This page get served within a second on normal load. Whe define the application as slow when the request takes more than 4 seconds.
From the measurements we can see that the connectiontime is fast, but the processing time is large.
We can't pinpoint the slowresponse the a single request, the site runs fine during normal hours but gets slow during peak hours
We had a problem that the site was CPU bound (aka running at 100%), we fixed that
We also had problems with exceptions maken the appdomain restart, we fixed that do
During peak hours I take a look at the asp.net performance counters. We can see behaviour that we have 600 current connections with 500 queued connections.
At peak times the CPU is around 40% (which makes me the think that it is not CPU bound)
Physical memory is around 60% used
At peak times the DatabaseServer CPU is around 30% (which makes me think it is not Database bound)

My conclusion is that something else is stopping the server from handling the requests faster. Possible suspects:

Deadlocks (!syncblk only gives one lock)
Disk I/O (checked via sysinternals procesexplorer: 3.5 mB/s)
Garbage collection (10~15% during peaks)
Network I/O (connect time still low)

To find out what the proces is doing I created to minidumps.

I managed to create two MemoryDumps 20 seconds apart. This is the output of the first:

!threadpool
CPU utilization 6%
Worker Thread: Total: 95 Running: 72 Idle: 23 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1
Number of Timers: 64

and the output of the second:

!threadpool
CPU utilization 9%
Worker Thread: Total: 111 Running: 111 Idle: 0 MaxLimit: 200 MinLimit: 100
Work Request in Queue: 1589
