AJAX :: Updating A Client Label Or Textbox
Jul 1, 2010
I have a server side procedure that opens a tcp socket to a server then recieves chunks of data from the server. The server side code does this in a loop, collects the data as a string, then finally displays the data in a textbox. It all works fine.
My problem is, as the chunks of bytes are returned, I need to update a client textbox or lable showing bytes received on each iteration of the loop. I've tried injecting client side java and I've tried using such things as the updatepanel and/or updateprogress controls. I haven't gotten anything to work. It always seems to only update the client on the last iteration. i.e. in a server side procedure/loop, update a client side textbox/label. Or maybe tell me what I am doing wrong? This is some of the code I am using now without using an updatepanel or updateprogess:

I either don't understand or I'm not using AJAX right. I'm running a long report. I'd like to have a label to show the user that the "Report Running", then, that the report has finished. But, when the user runs another report, I'd like to have the label that shows "Report Finished!" to clear so that you don't have "Report Running!" and "Report Finished!" on the screen at the same time. But, the label will not clear???? I get both lables showing. What am I doing wrong?
Here is a sample:
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel2" runat="server" >
<Triggers>
<asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="Button1" EventName="Click" /> [code]...

I have a radiobuttonlist control in an AJAX tabpanel, which I would like not to postback whenever the selected item is changed. But I do want to modify the text in a textbox, that is within a separate updatepanel, to be the text of the new selected item.

I am working on a project where the customer has a large database of products, they want to select the product by the id number and I thought it best that the description also show up. What I have is a dropdownlist that is linked to the id number in the database table and that works just fine. My problem comes when populating the corresponding description from the table into either a textbox or label(doesn't matter which one I use) I can accomplish this without ajax just fine but we would like to reduce the postbacks to the server. I have never used ajax before Here is my code from the aspx file.

Here is the code in the cs file

I used PopupControl Extender to display row details from a gridview, and need to update the two textboxes, but the changed value in the textboxes did not get picked up when click the update button on the popup window, so I need to get client side javascript to read the new changed value from these text boxes. However, I tried a few way, none worked for me, not sure what is wrong.
1. Add a javascript function in the .aspx file and use onclientclick of the linkbutton control to call the function, I got error of "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object required".
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
function newTextValue(textbox)
{
var text = document.getElementById("TextBox1").Value;
alert(text);
}
</script)
<asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("GalleryTemplateName") %>' Height="20px" Width="230px"
style="text-align: left"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton2" runat="server" Font-Bold="True" CommandArgument='<%# Eval("GalleryTemplateId") %>'
oncommand="LinkButton2_Click" OnClientClick="newTextValue(this)" >Update</asp:LinkButton>
2. Use ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock in the aspx.cs file, :
ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(this, this.GetType(), "changevalue", "alert(document.getElementById('TextBox1').value);", true);
but the alert window did not showup, that means the client javascript did not run? I just use an alert window to test to see if the textbox value is picked up. Note, I used Ajax Toolkit PopupControl Extender, all codes are in an update panel.

I'm using a third party control which fires a server side method when a document gets saved. Should there be any problems with saving, I'd like to display a message on the client side, such as:
[Code]....
Doing that in server side doesn't work after discovering IsCallBack = true.
How do you update lblMessage via CallBack without a full PostBack?

I'm using VWD2010 express. using C# code behind.
What I need to do is update a label during a loop (simplified from my implimentation). If I can refresh the whole page or an update panel that would work too. I want to give the user more info than just "Please Wait...". So the extreamly simplified version of what I'm trying to do is:
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text="Label"></asp:Label>
<br />
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" onclick="Button1_Click Text="Button" />
protected void Button1_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)
{
for(int i =0; i<=10; i++)
{
Label1.Text = i.ToString();
}
}
Because ASP runs all of it's code behind events before sending the HTML to the user it will not update the label text until after the entire loop has run. I've tried using and update panel and using the UpdatePanel1.Update(); command. I've turned off out buffering Response.Buffer=false; and Response.BufferOutput=false;. I've been searching forums for the past 2 days trying for find a solution. Is this even possilble with ASP or are we at the mercy of ASP only giving HTML to the user when after it's done with it's server side events?

I have a DB in which looks like this:
Game
WinningID (FK)
LoosingID (FK)
Score
Player
ID (PK)
Name
Rank
Country
My Game Table contains score of Players wins against each other. So WinnindID (Player1) Vs. LoosingID (Player2) has a score of 4.
That being said. I am creating a web page in which I have to show the score. I populated ListBoxes with the Player Names and have two labels to show the score.
Label 1: Showing Player1 as opponent and won.
Label 2: Showing Player2 as opponent and won.

I am trying to update client side controls asynchronously with information from a service.
The service I am using has a callback delegate that points to the users web page (server side)
I would like to update information on the page that is initiated by another users also consuming the same service. exactly like a chatroom.
I am trying to use an update panel, and call updatepanel.update() (server side) once I recieve the information from the service. basically: how do I partially update control data from the server side so that client side can see it.

cookies are generated from the client scripting.e.g. document.cookie = city=NYC;
I want to update this from GUI using
Response.cookies["city"] = LA;
I could not understand why this is not possible.( I read about Httponly and all that stuff but still not clear).If I use Javascript in code behind page then I am able to change the value.e.g.
Literal ltMsgUpdate = new Literal();
ltMsgUpdate.Text = "<script type='text/javascript'>document.cookie = 'city=LA';" + "</script>";
Page.Controls.Add(ltMsgUpdate);
But I could not use this type of code because there is response.redirect statement in the function where I am updating cookie using (response.cookie) and that's why the javascript code never runs.
Bottomline: I want to update cookies in code behind page which is generated in client scripting.

So there is a ASP checkboxlist that gets rendered to the table and in the code behind the checkboxes get bound with a label from a code table. I need to display a text box only if a certain checkbox is checked off.
<table id="chkSomeCheckbox">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>[code]....
The checkboxlist renders a table which the element retains the ID. I have tried to just get the value of the label when a checkbox is checked and then go from there to create my logic - but I can't seem to be able to grab the value of the label. I have tried the following different ways:
$("#<%chkSomeCheckbox.ClientID> input").next("label").val();
or
$("#<%chkSomeCheckbox.ClientID> input").next().val();
I am using the input selector because when I get this first part working, I will need to do some logic on it.

I have a webform that has a lot of controls and a submit button. When a user submits clean data, there is an asp.net label control that displays a "form submitted successfully" message. My problem is that after this successful submission, if the same user enters some invalid value for some fields on the same form and clicks on the submit button, the page still displays the success message along with the asp.net error message for that field (By using the asp.net validation control). My question is how do I get rid of the success message in this scenario? (In this case all I want to display is the client side validation error message). I am not that familiar with javascript.
<asp:Button ID="btnAddActivity" Text="Add Activity" runat="server" onclick="btnAddActivity_Click" ValidationGroup="vgSetup" OnClientClick=" return changeLabel();"/>
<asp:Label ID="lblMessage" visible="false" ForeColor="red" runat="server"></asp:Label>
function changeLabel()
{
document.getElementById('<%= lblMessage.ClientID %>').innerHTML = "";
return;
}
Here is the markup for the label and button .I tried calling a javascript function on the OnClick event .This disables the success message, but the validation error messages are displayed after a post back.I want to display the validation error messages without a post back.

I've been trying to resolve this issue for like 10 hours but with no luck. I am trying to load data from a db to text boxes and allow the user to enter his/her modifications and click a button to update the db with the entered value in the textboxes. The problem is the entered data are not sent to the db but the data that are loaded when the page is loaded is what it goes to the db. I also tried vb codes and javascript to change the data of the textbox but that did not work.

I am trying to update the table records by intering a new values in a textbox
and am facing problems in the code of dataset
how could I perform that
[code]....
You should post any code that you are having problems with in the thread (because apparently some people can't open the files attached).
Anyways, you need a TextBox on the page. Then you need to access the Text in the TextBox (using the TextBox.Text property). Once you've got that you should use it to update your database.
The best way to supply this value (that has been provided by the end user) is to use the SqlCommand.Parameters property (if you're using the SqlCommand object).
This topic is covered nicely in:

I'm using following DropDownList event to select an employee from MS SQL Server 2005 and showing the employee's information on TextBox.
protected void employeeDropDownList_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender,
EventArgs e)
{
EmployeeDAL employeeDAL = new EmployeeDAL();
DataTable dataTable = employeeDAL.GetEmployeeData();
for (int i = 1; i <= dataTable.Rows.Count; i++)......
But the problem is... values of the TextBoxes are not changing. I mean TextBoxes are keeping previous values those were assigned in employeeDropDownList_SelectedIndexChanged event. But why?
