.net - Catch Database Connection Error

Feb 11, 2011

Is there a way to catch a database exception and then redirect to an error page? I have a data access class that I use to make a sql connection and then functions that call it to execute my SQL commands. My problem is that if my database is not available I cannot catch that error. Here is the code I am using in my class:

Protected Function GetConnection() As SqlConnection
Dim ret_conn As SqlConnection
ret_conn = New SqlConnection(System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("EUCNET00617").ToString())
ret_conn.Open()
GetConnection = ret_conn
End Function

DataSource Controls :: Vb.net Database Connection - Try/catch Or Using?

Jun 11, 2010

I'm trying to weigh up which is the better most reliable database connection for use on a vb.net/ms sql site. I've previously experienced problems catching and closing db connections with the using statement if an error occurs, but do like the fact it doesn't need to use any global variables. Both examples use a general Database class file which opens and closes a connection.my current examples are: TRY CATCH EXAMPLE:

SQL Server :: Receiving An Error - A Network-related Or Instance-specific Error Occurred While Establishing A Connection To SQL Server

Sep 23, 2010

I've created a small website with a simple sqlite database using vwd 2010 .net 4. In dev and test envionments everything works fine, however when i promote to my hosting provider i receive the following error:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I've been configuring the connection strings (autogenerated from entity framework and attached db) but unable to get it working on the hosting provider, I'm assuming it's related to permissions but not entirely sure how to resolve - here's the web.config as it stands:

<add
name="ApplicationServices"
connectionString="data [code].....

For info the environments are set up as follows:

- Dev environment is vwd express 2010 with sqlite mdf attached

- Test environment is windows 7 server, iis 7 with appdomain identity set to network service

DataSource Controls :: Catch Don't Catch Any Error From SQL 2000 Transition Store Procedure

Feb 7, 2010

Here is the code copied from [URL] In asp.net code behind, I use try-catch try to catch any error but never catch it. In SQL database, if I rename Employees to Employeesx or change column DepartmentID to DepartmentIDx, record will not be deleted (it is right) without any error (it is wrong, suppose catch an error).

@DepartmentID int

Getting Unhandled Exception But Unable To Catch With Try Catch

Sep 14, 2011

I get this error in the browser:

Code:
Thread was being aborted.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted.]
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +486
System.Web.ApplicationStepManager.ResumeSteps(Exception error) +501
System.Web.HttpApplication.System.Web.IHttpAsyncHandler.BeginProcessRequest(HttpContext context, AsyncCallback cb, Object extraData) +123
System.Web.HttpRuntime.ProcessRequestInternal(HttpWorkerRequest wr) +379

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053

I have try{}catch(Exception ex){} in the right place:

Code:
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
try
{
// all processing occurs inside here
}
catch(Exception ex)
{
}
}

I even created a global.asax file and on the Application_Error event, I wrote a code that would email me the error (and i'm not getting an email regarding that error when I get the error shown above). I know for a fact that the thread is going inside the "try" statement because I send emails to myself whenever it finishes certain codes inside of it. So how come I'm getting that error in my browser instead of it being handled in my "catch" statement? I have two problems here, one, why is the exception not going to my "catch" statement, and two, why am I getting that error in the first place.

Note: my web app calls a webservice.

JavaScript - Receiving Content From Webpage?

Dec 9, 2010

When I made an AJAX call to an ASP.NET page, I had a mechanism to return some text based on QueryString parameters. Such as :

Response.Write("<text>");

But in the response, I got a lot of extra information about viewstate status. This does not happen in classic ASP or PHP. Also if I ask for the whole page, it returns it with the page directive

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="_Default" %>

How to avoid this extra information and pass only the required one?

Currently I am using PHP page for returning things for the same purpose. It works totally fine.

C# - Receiving Data Sent From Client Machine?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm working on a project that has a C# app (running 24/7 as a server) on the client's machine). This app needs to send a file as a byte stream via POST to a server I am currently hosting on my home desktop.

Can this file be received by a C# app running on my server, or does it have to be as ASP app/page?

Also, I know how to send a bytestream via POST, but how will I set my server side app to listen for this incoming data? I have never done something like this, so I'm looking for some pointers to get me started.

Receiving XML From A Text Email Body?

Feb 23, 2011

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I need to set up a way to receive xml from an email. I am to set up an email address that will always receive text emails where the body contains an xml document - not attached, but as the body itself. I know how to parse the xml and all of that once I get it, but I have never done anything like this so I am unsure on how to even set it up.

I assume I have to make some IIS settings that tell the server to execute a page when an email is received to a particular address?

Receiving 500.19 From IIS7 With A Virtual Directory?

Nov 9, 2010

I'm receiving the 500.19 error in IIS7 for a virtual directory that I've added for an applicaiton. The HResult code is 0x80070003. The error message is "The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid."I've checked the MSDN article at ttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/942055, but none of these issues point to the HResult that I'm receiving. In fact, in this virtual directory, there are no configuration files. The only files located there are shared images and PDF files.

MVC Controller Factory Receiving Request For 'favicon.ico'?

Apr 1, 2011

I've noticed that a request to 'favicon.ico' is being passed to my ASP.net MVC controller factory when using Google Chrome and the Visual Studio Development Server. The 'controllerType' parameter has a value of 'null' which is unsurprisingly resulting in an unhandled exception and which I only know about because of an error log.where the request is coming from and why ASP.net is letting it get to the controller factory? CSS files and images for example are being correctly filtered out.

WCF / ASMX :: Sending And Receiving SOAP Request In C#?

Mar 10, 2011

This is my first time trying to send a SOAP request in C#. When I click the Test button I should be passing a XML string to the web services and then getting a response. The lblTransactionNum label updates with "System.Net.ConnectStream" when it should be returning a transaction number within an unparsed response.

I'm not sure if the way I went about this is ideal but it is just from what I learned searching.

Here is my code

what I am missing? I have a desktop application that uses this web service in the same way but it is in VB.

Here is the VBscript from the desktop app if it contains some extra parsing steps that I will have to add to the C# for my web application but right now I am just trying to get the SOAP request and response wired up.

Receiving POST Data In .ashx File?

Feb 21, 2011

I have implemented a generic handler to work as a restful web service in ASP.Net. I have a problem receiving the XML file that is being posted to this web service. I cannot actually see anything being passed. I have gone through the form, querystring, and file properties of the request object. Everything is empty. I know that the file has been posted correctly because I can see it while using a port sniffer.

How can I access this file?
