Configuration :: VS 2008 Express Don't Support Publish Need Aspnet_Compiler?
Jan 20, 2011
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Express and I read some where that it doen't support the "publish" menu option.
The article said I need to run "Aspnet_Compiler" from the command line. What do they mean by "command line" ?? I tried using "Aspnet_Compiler -v /MyFirstWebSite" in the "Run Command" and it indicate that it can find it.
How do I use this ?? Or is there an easier way to publish my website design I did in Visual Studio 2008 Express ??
Or if I move my design into Visual Studio 2010 Express, will the publishing be easier?? If so, how do I move the complete project over ?? Is it as easy as to install VS 2010 Express and open my project ?

I have several css style sheets I want to work with. I have copied them into the appropriate directory structure in my project. The styles are applied correctly. But the manage CSS styles tool bar on the left margin doesn't seem to work correctly. At one point I had generated a style sheet and worked with it there, but now it not only can't find the one it generated, but the attach style sheet link doesn't respond at all, nor does anything in this bar. Same deadness with the CSS Properties bar. With or without a style sheet loaded in the editor -- a style sheet that is active in the project such that when I run it, the styles are applied.VB version of studio, running on Vista home basic.PS, the design mode works a lot better than the professional version I use in my day job on XP and server 2003.

I'm working in Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I have a web application based upon the standard ASP.NET Web Application, which contains the aspnetdb.mdf SQL Express database for forms based security. For testing deployment, I'm trying to use the Publish option to publish the web app to IIS 7, which exists on the same machine that I'm building the web app on. The machine is running Windows 2008 R2.
I went through the Help file to set up the deployment of the database, using the Package/Publish SQL tab in the site properties. I followed the help file to the letter, or so I thought. I go to publish to the virtual directory I set up on IIS and it gives me errors, specifically saying the following:
Web deployment task failed.(The database'|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf' could not be created.)
I took this to mean the the path isn't valid for publishing to, which makes sense. So I changed the destination path to the fully qualified path (C:WebAppsApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf) and ran it again. This time I got the following error:
Web deployment task failed.(Cannot connect to the database 'C:WebAppsAppDataaspnetdb.mdr'.)
I looked at the security for the folder and everything seems fine. Now I'm stuck.
My question is - can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or supply a list of steps to follow, or give me a link to a site that has clear steps as to how this is done?

I am unable to get the -fixednames switch to create dlls for the cs code behind files. The files in the bin folder are compiled aspx pages, but the code behind files are all compiled into one large websitename.dll file. Here is my command with switches.
aspnet_compiler -v / -p E:SourceDotNet4mysolutionwebsite -f -d -fixednames E:SourceDotNet4CompiledWebSite
This produces many files in the bin folder.
website.dll and website.pdb (contains code behind)
myform1.aspx.643c7876.dll (compiled aspx layout ui)
I have tested this over and over to make sure I am not missing anything. The test is place a label on myform1.aspx, and in the codebehind populate the label with some text. Compile the website with the above switches and deploy the website.Make a change to the myform1 codebehind and change the label text. Compile and only deploy the myform1.aspx.643c7876.dll to the website. Result: label is still the same. Now deploy the website.dll and pdb and the label changes. how to get -fixednames to create sinle dlls for codebehind?

I'm working on running aspnet_compiler as a post-build even on my Visual Studio 2010 MVC2 application. Every time I run it, I get this error:
The CodeDom provider type "Microsoft.VJSharp.VJSharpCodeProvider, VJSharpCodeProvider, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" could not be located.
I have no J# in my solution. The J# 2.0 redistributable package is installed, and I have no .java files of any kind in my solution, although I have a lot of .js files.
<compiler language="vj#;vjs;vjsharp" extension=".jsl;.java" type="Microsoft.VJSharp.VJSharpCodeProvider, VJSharpCodeProvider, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a">

Is it possible to just update a target directory rather than fully recompile a website everytime?
For example, if i have already have a precompiled website in a target directory and then a project from the source changes, can i run the aspnet_compiler such that it only updates the target directory with the new changes (by updating only that assembly) rather than delete the whole target directory and recompile the whole application? We do not use the -u option, so we're talking about fully precompiled sites.

I have been using VWD2010 Express for a website that I am working on. Due to a delay in implementing the 4.0 framework at the hosting service that I use, I need to finish up with VWD2008 Express. Is there a simple way to save my project so that it is compatible with 2008?

Using the Web Platform installer, in installed both the Visual Web Developer Express 2008 and SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008. Next, I connected to my local SQL Server Express 2008 and created a simple database and table using Visual Web Developer Express 2008 where the database file resided in the app data folder of my website. I can connect and explore the table from both Visual
Web Developer 2008 as well as the full blown version of Visual Studio 2008.

After I installed Visual Studio 2008 Standard edition, then I upgrade "SQL Server Express 2005" to "SQL Server Express 2008 SP2". Process upgrading SQL Server Express 2008 was going succesfully (none of the process was fail).
But when I create a New Website I could not add a new item "SQL Server Database" into my website file. Because Visual Studio always rejected any new "SQL Server Database" by giving message below (underline):
This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.

Believe it or not, but I did not had to worry about the hosting of a asp.net site for years.
Figured I'll get some hosting for fiddling with things (for instance, mvc now).
However I found this "Publish" function in VS (vs '08 team ed) a pain. Publish to an FTP site seems to take ages. So I just publish to a local folder and FTP that up (filezilla). But d@mn.....the dll's used, javascript files (included by default in an asp.net mvc project), etc keep failing...driving me bonkers.
How you guys "Publish"? I got a fairly good host now (thanks M) so the problem should be on my side. Internet connection speed is not too bad here.
