Data Controls :: Where To Store Large Files (in Database Or In Folder)
Apr 8, 2013
I am curious to know the following:
We are going to develop a website where we need to store large number of files. The file size may be uptp 50 MB. What approach should we follow:
1) We should store files in Database
2) We should have a directory and store all the files in that
3) We should hire a SAN Storage and use this seperate location to store the files.
I have a fileupload control in my web page, through which multiples files are uploaded one by one.And those multiple uploaded files are shown in 'Gridview' below the Fileupload control with Download and Delete button. Now, I want to save all the uploaded files coming in Gridview in my Database column (named "FileName") Separated by comma for particular column ID.i.e, If Gridview contains 3 uploaded files: abc.docx, xyz.pdf, aaa.txt then all the 3 files should also save in database column (named "FileName") for a particular ID.DB table is:
ID Address FileName 1 Aa Abc.txt, xyz.docx 2 Bb 3 Cc 4 dd
I want to upload some large files from a web page to MS SQL Sever database, I am very sure that it is sounding weird.
File sizes are around 100MB.
I am having following settings,
SessionTimeOut period = 60 Mins,
Server Operation timeout = 60 Mins,
SQL Connection Timeout = 4 mins (Not sure if this is helping)
This is page is going to be used by our client only once a week & as they are having web farm environment we are avpiding to store these files on file systems.
Currenty we are able to upload files with sizes upto 8 MB succesfully. But when we are uploading a file of 100MB it fails, its for sure that operation takes lots of time.

In my web application I am working with files. Some files are very large. I use Response.Write() to write the file to the browser. This goes well for the smaller files, but for large files this can take a while and the bandwidth is fully used.
Is it possible to split large documents and send it piece by piece to the browser? Are there other ways to send the document quicker to the browser?I hold the document as a property of an object.
i've got some problem reading excel files to store into sqlserver database. currently my code has a fileupload control and a button for me to save the excel file into a folder and read the data inside the excel file and write it into the sql database. The code works only if the excel sheet name is Sheet1.xlsx, however i tried upload a diff file named ImportUserFile.xlsx and it gave me the exception below. 'ImportUserFile$' is not a valid name. Make sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it is not too long. i have also tried other file names and it seemed only Sheet1.xlsx works.

if i want to get multiple values from database and pass this dataset to another page can we use session to store the dataset values..i knw we can..but some one says that its not a gud approach..this will cause server process down..is it true?if it so then wat are all the other ways to do that?
Its related to datatable in gridview store in session and then session retrive and store to database. basically i am using gridview here creating new row for button click and these row adding untill user's last entry then submit all these entry to database. so i want to use session variable to store this data temporarily and after final entry user click on submit button and all data shold be save in db.
I need to store a large amount of data in user's session but I guess using Session Object is not the best way of doing that. Is there any other way around??? Remember I don't have small variables to store, I have large collections.
I have an entity called a file which is the main part of my project. The file has invoices and timesheets captured against it. So I have a file tab with info about the file, like FileNumber, Vessedl, Voyage etc. Now I need to be able to upload documents for the file. So I will add an uploads tab. But the uploaded documents need to be saved for the specified file the user uploads it for. then when a user opens a file I need to show the documents for that file in a list of some sort. the best way to do this. What's the best way to upload multiple files? should I store all the info in my database?
