DataSource Controls :: Enabling Paging On ObjectDataSource That Is Built Dynamically In Code Behind?
Oct 28, 2010
I have the following on my aspx page
[Code]....
Then in my code behind i have the following set up in 4+ button events, since each button serves a different purpose.. Prior to this past week, i was only working with 2 gridviews on the page.. that were linked to this datasource.. so everything was fine.. but recently had to add a Datalist to display the results a certain way.. I got it all working, but now that more records are in the table the datalist is growing in length on the page and cant figure out how to modify the current code to enable paging without having to redesign the logic all together to get it enabled.
Based on what i have below and above, is there a solution i can implement to implement paging ONLY for the Datalist? Or if it cant be specific, if enabled, will it affect the gridview that is already configured to enable paging, which already works?

I started learning LINQ, So i thought of just creating gridview with sorting and paging using objectdatasource using LINQ. So i got this link
[URL] which Brian Orrel tell us how to do using IQueryable Interface. but i have nearly 300 lines of stored procedure which joins nearly 20 tables. so i thought of creating a stored procedure and using that instead of IQuerytable.

I want to bind an ObjectDataSource to a property in my asp page and I want to do it in the page's aspx code, not in code-behind. I've already done it in code-behind, as follows:
[Code]....
I'd prefer to get rid of the ugly code-behind and just do this in mark-up. Something like
[Code]....
This gives me a run-time error: Cannot create an object of type 'System.Object' from its string representation 'SelectedBook' for the 'DataSource' property.Is there a way of doing this declaratively and not in code-behind? Further, what if what I want is to actually use a child property of the property in question? For example, if my Book object has a ReaderComments collection, can I databind to it decaratively in the aspx mark-up?

I have a page where you can search and display other data, very simple layout. 1 Gridview and 1 objectdatasource. But i have 4 possible buttons that can populate the gridview..
i would like to control my objectdatasource from the code behind based on the button you click.
here is what i have right now.. but if possible, can this source not be hardcoded like this and only built in the code behind?
[Code]....
I found this site with a solution to this persons issue, but i cant seem to get mine working this way.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2404264/overwriting-controlparameters-of-datasources-in-code-behind
I have this as the code behind right now when you press the button.. what other parameter settings am i missing and is this the right order to populate them for the source to acknowledge my values?

know in asp.net 1.0 the grid display controls would pull all the data in, and then provide paging but the paging was done in memory.Are there any smarter controls that provide paging where they only pull the data relevent to current page being displayed?ie. select 10 rows for the current page, instead of doing a select of ALL the rows in the table.

I'm using a Datagrid with paginig, while clicking on select all , all items in all pages are selected but while the execution, I'ven't all the selected items.
How can you get the DataGrid.Items.Count to reflect the FULL record count instead of displaying the page size?
I'm using this property and all it's displaying is the page size of 10.

I have read many online articles showing how to implement custom paging with stored procedure and objectdatasource control. So I know the benefits of custom paging on large result sets and I know how to implement it.
In my application, I have a stored procedure which is using ROW_NUMBER and taking parameters such as startIndex, pageSize etc. I also have method in my DAL who call this stored procedure and on my page I have GridView and ObjectDataSource control and they are calling DAL methods and everything is working perfectly fine.
Now I want to implement GridView paging without ObjectDataSource control by calling the DAL methods manually. I dont want to use ObjectDataSource control because I need manual access to the DataTable my DAL methods return which I think I dont have if I use ObjectDataSource control.

I am using ObjectDataSource controll to bind gridview and using custom paging. Everything working fine but the problem arises when last page contains only one record and i try to delete it-- gridview disappear.
Below is ObjectDataSource declaration..It is working fine..only problem is with deleting from last
page which is containing only single record.
<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ODS1" runat="server"
TypeName="MyClass"
SelectCountMethod="GetDataCount"
SelectMethod="BindData"
DeleteMethod="DeleteData"
EnablePaging="true"
StartRowIndexParameterName="StartRowIndex"
MaximumRowsParameterName="MaxRowCount"
>
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="ID" DbType="int" />
</DeleteParameters>
</asp:ObjectDataSource>

reading on the forums about assigning event handlers to controls that are dynamically created via code and am just not getting anywhere.In my particular case, I'm rolling through a directory of images and creating ImageButton controls on the fly and want to assign the OnCommand event to a single handler.Then, by using the CommandName (which is different for each control) I can figure out which ImageButton was clicked and act accordingly.
The snippet below (which can be found in many posts on this topic) is inside a foreach which loops through the directory and gets each FileInfo (fi).Each is then added to a PlaceHolder (phImages).
[Code]...
This code compiles and runs but the event handler is never invoked when an ImageButton is clicked. I believe this is because you cannot, without some coding I'm not familiar enough to do yet, assign a handler to multiple controls.I say this because I ran into a similar problem in a Silverlight app I wrote and had to use a lambda (=>) operator to do something similar (although I admit to not knowing enough about this to know if this situation is the same).

I am using a GridView with an ObjectDataSource bound to a DataTable. I am using the GridView for displaying a report, NO editing is being done, just read only, however, I am sorting and paging. I need to turn off ViewState for the GridView to improve performance. After turning off the ViewState I start getting the error messages for both paging and sorting:The GridView 'gridView' fired event Sorting which wasn't handled.This is fine I just need to know how to implement the Sorting and Paging events correctly to leveage the ObjectDataSource. I would preffer not to remove the ObjectDataSource from use, especially if there is a way I can manually wire up the datasource correctly to continue to use the GridView as I had been when ViewState was on.Any help on getting the datasource wired up or a solution for handling the events in the context of the datasource would be great.

I have SQLDataSource for my gridview. By default it works fine but i need to determine a few things before calling my procedure. By this i mean i need to determine a few things about the fields completed and set a flag to determine where the procedure will look.
I found a few examples online on passing parameters in code behind, but cant seem to get them to work. Here is what i tried and cant get results back. When i execute the procedure on the SQL side with the same parameter values, it works, so i know its returning results, so means my values are not being sent or im doing something really wrong. I have some of the lines commented out so the page can load and display for now.. but i need to get it working with custom parameters and flags.
Here is my SQLDataSource:

I am trying to update a database table(sql 2000 server) using a sqlCommand object. I have created a basic form and added asp.net validators to the text boxes.
I have also included an extra text box with id "UpdateStuID" which accepts a particular ID for retrieving values from the database into the other textboxes. It happens on click event of button "retrieveDeails" .
After retrieving details I have another button called "UpdateDetails" for updating the database values.
Now the problem I am facing here is that, The VALIDATORS fire up when I click on "retrieveDetails" after entering a valid ID. I guess this is because the validators fire up every time we connect to the database.
But here I am only retrieving values and later on updating them.
But because the validators fire up immediately after click on "retrieveDetails" no values are retrieved in the textboxes.
When I remove the validators everything works as expected. But I do need them when I click on "updateDetails" button.
So I want to know whether there is a way so that I can make the validators fire up only on the click of "updateDetails" button.
BTW I am using Required and RegularExpression validators.

I have a dialogue window that contains an Accordion Control that is dynamically built. The only thing that appears on my source page is the opening and closing tags for the control. The panes and the controls that appear on the panes are all added dynamically based on records in a database.
Now here is my situation, if a certian action is performed on one of the controls then I want to save that controls data and make it no longer available for use, this was easily accomplished by having the control hide itself. An issue arises though when I have hidden all of the controls on a certain pane, the header for the pane still exists and this is not the desired result.
What I would like is to be able to dynamically remove the entire contents of the control and then re-build it. Due to the timing of the events in the page post back sequence, a simple call to the method that builds the control will not work and if an explanation is required I will provide one. Also, looping through all of the panes and the controls on each pane will not work since after the first pass through the loop the panes collection is mutated, the enum table for the control is no longer correct since the initial pane has been removed, as a result the for loop throws an error.
Can any one come up with a way that I can clear out the control, keeping only the basic empty structure, and re-build it all in a single post to the server?

I have a simple web form with a dropdownlist and a ReportViewer. I would like to dynamically change the report within the viewer when the user makes a selection in the dropdownlist. I think I need to alter the ObjectDataSource that the ReportViewer is using. I've tried a few things without success.

I would prefer that all middle tier methods that are used by GridViews be in the form that allows them to be used by ObjectDataSources...
<DataObjectMethod(DataObjectMethodType.Delete)> _
However, I am working on a project that I did not create. So, I was wondering if there is a way to use all the cool built-in editing functionality of a GridView without setting a DataSource? In other words, I am binding the datasource in the code behind (this works), and I have the following in my GridView...
<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True"></asp:CommandField>
And in the RowUpdating event (after the update button is clicked), I would like to call a stored proc to update a table and then use this kludge to get the GridView out of "edit" mode...
e.Cancel = True
grdWeeklyTime.EditIndex = -1
grdWeeklyTime.DataBind()
Is this possible or do I absolutely need to specify a DataSource in the GridView dropdown in design mode and then check the Enable Editing checkbox?
