DataSource Controls :: How To Build Select Parameters Dynamically In Code Behind
Apr 9, 2010
I have SQLDataSource for my gridview. By default it works fine but i need to determine a few things before calling my procedure. By this i mean i need to determine a few things about the fields completed and set a flag to determine where the procedure will look.
I found a few examples online on passing parameters in code behind, but cant seem to get them to work. Here is what i tried and cant get results back. When i execute the procedure on the SQL side with the same parameter values, it works, so i know its returning results, so means my values are not being sent or im doing something really wrong. I have some of the lines commented out so the page can load and display for now.. but i need to get it working with custom parameters and flags.
Here is my SQLDataSource:

The drop down list is used to determine what search criteria will be used to find an invoice. I tried to set the Select method in the switch statement. I don't understand how to set the Select Method and the select parameters programmatically though . I tried a few different ways but can't make the compiler happy. My ODS is in scope in the code behind. I'm not able to access it's properties though. The BAL resides in a separate project that is a ClassLibrary. I also have a using statement for the ClassLibrary project in the code behind.
give me an example of how to do this?

I am trying to build a repeater dynamically through the code behind. I found this code on the microsoft site:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Repeater1.HeaderTemplate = New MyTemplate(ListItemType.Header)
Repeater1.ItemTemplate = New MyTemplate(ListItemType.Item)
Repeater1.AlternatingItemTemplate = _
New MyTemplate(ListItemType.AlternatingItem)
Repeater1.FooterTemplate = New MyTemplate(ListItemType.Footer)
Repeater1.DataSource = New String() {"one", "two", "three", "four"}
[Code]....
So this code works without throwing any exceptions, but what I would like to do is accessing the DataSource inside of Sub InstantiateIn(). I know you can access the DataSource in the front end using DataBinder.Eval and Container.DataItem, but is there a way to access the data during the InstantiateIn() Sub?
Or if there is another way to do this i'm up for trying that as well. Essentially I am trying to avoid writing asp.net code, instead I would rather write everything in vb (code-behind)

I have a need to add my page controls dynamically in code behind.
I do well, adding a dropdownlist, a SQL datasource to populate it, setting it to autopostback=true, and adding a gridview and its SQL datasource.
What I'm unsure about is how to programmatically refer to the SelectParameter, being a control (the DropDownList), and its selected item.

getting the Parameters declared in an sql function in the C# code. We can actually get the parameters from a Stored Procedure by giving SqlCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters
Similarly is there any way to get the Parameters from the SQL Function.

Is it possible to select on page load or page pre load a different master page depending on a number of parameters?
A simple example would be if the device is mobile, use master page A, otherwise use master page b.
Can this be done?

I am trying to allow users to grab their stored procs and call certain ones from within code. I can get the stored procedures and then fill a dropdown with them, but what I cannot find at this point is how to get the parameters that each stored procedure needs. I would like, once an SP is chosen from the dropdown to make a call to the db with that sp name and grab its paramter list so I can report what needs to be sent in to the user.

I have the following on my aspx page
[Code]....
Then in my code behind i have the following set up in 4+ button events, since each button serves a different purpose.. Prior to this past week, i was only working with 2 gridviews on the page.. that were linked to this datasource.. so everything was fine.. but recently had to add a Datalist to display the results a certain way.. I got it all working, but now that more records are in the table the datalist is growing in length on the page and cant figure out how to modify the current code to enable paging without having to redesign the logic all together to get it enabled.
Based on what i have below and above, is there a solution i can implement to implement paging ONLY for the Datalist? Or if it cant be specific, if enabled, will it affect the gridview that is already configured to enable paging, which already works?

But Datareader attached to a Gridview is empty.can you detect whats wrong here and it doesnt return a query result.So stored procedure is not standart or ı am doing something wrong.this doesnt raise any exception.but not returning any data.

I have a .NET 1 web app that is using a Oracle database, the web app has a page of table names that allows the users to select, there are 101 tables listed on the page. When the user clicks on a table name, it takes them to a page that shows user friendly column headers, the table data, etc. Is there a way to use one GridView to do this and show the user friendly column headers instead of creating 101 pages or 101 user controls and show that control based on the table passed into the page?
for example: the user clicks table 22, I want my gridview to look like this
Buyer's Name State City Zip Code Phone Number
if they click table 55 I want them to see this
Product Wholesale Price MSRP Sale Price On Sale (check box)
instead of showing the users
BuyersFullName BuyersState BuyersCity BuyersZipCode PhoneNumber, etc
and so I, I would like to use 1 gridview on one page if possible and build the grid on the "fly", We have the user friendly column headers in a table.
So my questions are:
is this possible, if so, what is the best approach in doing this
from a scalabilty level and maintenance level, would the 1 gridview be worth for all 101 (and growing tables), or would building a seperate user control for each table be better?

protected void Button19_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
SqlDataSource conn = new SqlDataSource();
conn.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Database2ConnectionString1"].ToString();
conn.SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;
conn.SelectCommand = "SELECT FROM table1 (a, b)VALUES(@a,@b)";
conn.SelectParameters.Add("a",TextBox1.Text);
conn.SelectParameters.Add("b", TextBox2.Text);
int rowsAffected = 0;
try
{
rowsAffected = conn.Selectt();
}
catch (Exception)
{
Label1.Text = "Error";
}
finally {
conn = null;
}
if (rowsAffected != 0)
{
Label1.Text = "Data saved";
}
}
well it returns error no overloading method for select (P.S. same code work fine for insert)

I will declarate a attribute, but it gives me an error
This query works fine and returns 1 record from type int:
SELECT TOP 1 DataObjectVersionID
FROM tblDataObjectVersionPropertyValueText
WHERE PropValue like CAST('00010281' AS ntext)
ORDER BY DataObjectVersionID DESC
And when I will declarate a attribute/parameter it gives me an error:
DECLARE @dataObjectVersionId INT
SET @dataObjectVersionId = SELECT TOP 1 DataObjectVersionID
FROM tblDataObjectVersionPropertyValueText
WHERE PropValue like CAST('00010281' AS ntext)
ORDER BY DataObjectVersionID DESC
Error message:

I load the content of some User Controls into my page with the use of jQuery. So I have this function that extracts the content from my User Control, and it works like a charm.
public string GetObjectHtml(string pathToControl)
{
// Create instance of the page control
Page page = new Page();
// Create instance of the user control
UserControl userControl = (UserControl)page.LoadControl(pathToControl);
//Disabled ViewState- If required
userControl.EnableViewState = false;
//Form control is mandatory on page control to process User Controls
HtmlForm form = new HtmlForm();
//Add user control to the form
form.Controls.Add(userControl);
//Add form to the page
page.Controls.Add(form);
//Write the control Html to text writer
StringWriter textWriter = new StringWriter();
//execute page on server
HttpContext.Current.Server.Execute(page, textWriter, false);
// Clean up code and return html
string html = CleanHtml(textWriter.ToString());
return html;
}
But I would really like to send in some parameters into my User Control when I create it. Is this possible, and how can i do that?
I can see that LoadControl() can take some parameters with object[] parameters but im really not sure on how to use it.

I want to have a dropdownlist in the footer row of a gridview. The dropdownlist must be populated with an stored procedure that receives a parameter and has a select. Is that posible?? I think yes but I having problems with the parameters.
[Code]....
The exception says incorrect sintax... but I've changed the procedure for something very simple to solve the problem like select 'hello' or select 1, 'hello' and I'm getting the same problem...

I have a dialogue window that contains an Accordion Control that is dynamically built. The only thing that appears on my source page is the opening and closing tags for the control. The panes and the controls that appear on the panes are all added dynamically based on records in a database.
Now here is my situation, if a certian action is performed on one of the controls then I want to save that controls data and make it no longer available for use, this was easily accomplished by having the control hide itself. An issue arises though when I have hidden all of the controls on a certain pane, the header for the pane still exists and this is not the desired result.
What I would like is to be able to dynamically remove the entire contents of the control and then re-build it. Due to the timing of the events in the page post back sequence, a simple call to the method that builds the control will not work and if an explanation is required I will provide one. Also, looping through all of the panes and the controls on each pane will not work since after the first pass through the loop the panes collection is mutated, the enum table for the control is no longer correct since the initial pane has been removed, as a result the for loop throws an error.
Can any one come up with a way that I can clear out the control, keeping only the basic empty structure, and re-build it all in a single post to the server?

I want to dynamically populate a link with the URI of the current request, but set one specific query string parameter. All other querystring paramaters (if there are any) should be left untouched. Eg, imagine I want to build a link back to the current page, but with the querystring parameter "valueOfInterest" always set to be "wibble" (I'm doing this from the code-behind of an aspx page, .Net 3.5 in C# FWIW).Eg, a request for either of these two:
/somepage.aspx
/somepage.aspx?valueOfInterest=sausages
would become:
/somepage.aspx?valueOfInterest=wibble
And most importantly (perhaps) a request for:
/somepage.aspx?boring=something
/somepage.aspx?boring=something&valueOfInterest=sausages
would preserve the boring params to become:
/somepage.aspx?boring=something&valueOfInterest=wibble
Caveats: I'd like to avoid string manipulation if there's something more elegant in asp.net that is more robust. However if there isn't something more elegant, so be it. I've done (a little) homework: I found a blog post which suggested copying the request into a local HttpRequest object, but that still has a read-only collection for the querystring params. I've also had a look at using a URI object, but that doesn't seem to have a querystring
